LOOK AT COMMENTARY

Imagine this. You are a life guard fighting off a shark as you swim out to a drowning man whose hysterical thrashing in the deep ocean waves could pull you both under. This is a picture of you and your kiruv (Ya 5:19-20) efforts (Ya 1:27 and Yd 1:23 and 1Ti 5:2) in the Adat HaEl Chai (the Community of the Living G-d).

You say, “What is the shark in this illustration?”

The shark is the world, the flesh, and the devil. Look at Shimon Kefa. He made the eidus tovah at Caesarea Philippi (see Mt 16:13-16 and 1Yn 4:15). Kefa had received the implanted word (Ya 1:21) which was able to save his soul. But now come the diverse temptations (see Ya:1:2 and Lk 22:31-34). And not only does the devil have to be resisted (Ya 4:7) but there is this ensuing shark fight with the carnal nature (see Ro 7:7-25 in light of 1 Co 9:27).

Remember also that the carnal nature is your own baggage you carry with you as you enter the kehillah and that carnal nature has its own agenda. The carnal nature comes to the kehillah to manipulate (Ac 5:1-11) and to obtain for its lusts (Ya 4:2). We are talking about an evil unbelieving heart (Ya 1:7-8) that trusts in worldly wisdom (Ya 3:13-18). Such a one sees even the teacher’s chair as a lucrative status upgrade, forgetting that the Judge is at the door and Moshiach’s Bema Judgment Seat is already set up near the Lake of Fire. At such a fiery “Lake” site there is no class stratification (Ya 2:1-13) or upward mobility, only downward mobility.

Out of the carnal nature, out of the evil heart, the mouth speaks. Therefore, the first thing that must be done in the “emergency room” of the kehillah is to close off the spurting “hemorrhage” of lashon hora by the instrumentation of the “arterial tourniquet” of pious taciturnity. This means “slow to speak” and curbing the worldly tongue (see Ya 1:26-27 and Ya 3:1-12 and Ya 4:11-12 and Ya 5:12). Let's stop here and test your Moshiach literacy.

So you are impressed with yourself that you can recite the kri’at Shema The shedim can do the same! Nominalism like that will save you, you think?
