לַ֭מְנַצֵּחַ SDBH For the choirmaster עַל־ To the tune of אַיֶּ֥לֶת SDBH The Doe הַשַּׁ֗חַר SDBH of the Dawn מִזְמ֥וֹר SDBH A Psalm לְדָוִֽד׃ SDBH of David אֵלִ֣י SDBH My G-d אֵ֭לִי SDBH my G-d לָמָ֣ה SDBH why עֲזַבְתָּ֑נִי SDBH have You forsaken me רָח֥וֹק SDBH Why are You so far מִֽ֝ישׁוּעָתִ֗י SDBH from saving me דִּבְרֵ֥י SDBH [so far] from my words שַׁאֲגָתִֽי׃ SDBH of groaning

(For the one directing. To the Deer of the Dawn. Mizmor Dovid.) Eli, Eli, lamah azavtani? [See Mt 27:46 OJBC] Why art Thou so far from my yeshuah, and from the words of my groaning?

אֱ‍ֽלֹהַ֗י SDBH O my G-d אֶקְרָ֣א SDBH I cry out י֭וֹמָם SDBH by day וְלֹ֣א SDBH . . . תַעֲנֶ֑ה SDBH but You do not answer וְ֝לַ֗יְלָה SDBH and by night וְֽלֹא־ SDBH but I have no דֽוּמִיָּ֥ה SDBH rest לִֽי׃

Elohai, I cry yomam, but Thou hearest not; and v'lailah, and am not silent.

וְאַתָּ֥ה SDBH Yet You קָד֑וֹשׁ SDBH are holy י֝וֹשֵׁ֗ב SDBH enthroned תְּהִלּ֥וֹת SDBH on the praises יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ SDBH of Israel

But Atah Kadosh, O Thou enthroned on the tehillot Yisroel.

בְּ֭ךָ In You בָּטְח֣וּ SDBH trusted אֲבֹתֵ֑ינוּ SDBH our fathers בָּ֝טְח֗וּ SDBH they trusted וַֽתְּפַלְּטֵֽמוֹ׃ SDBH and You delivered them

Avoteinu trusted in Thee; they had bitachon, and Thou didst deliver them.

אֵלֶ֣יךָ to You זָעֲק֣וּ SDBH They cried out וְנִמְלָ֑טוּ SDBH and were set free בְּךָ֖ in You בָטְח֣וּ SDBH they trusted וְלֹא־ SDBH and were not בֽוֹשׁוּ׃ SDBH disappointed

They cried unto Thee, and were delivered; they had bitachon in Thee, and were not disappointed.

וְאָנֹכִ֣י SDBH But I תוֹלַ֣עַת SDBH am a worm וְלֹא־ SDBH and not אִ֑ישׁ SDBH a man חֶרְפַּ֥ת SDBH scorned אָ֝דָ֗ם SDBH by men וּבְז֥וּי SDBH and despised עָֽם׃ SDBH by the people

But I am a tola'at, and no ish; a reproach of men, and despised of the people [see Yeshayah 53:3 on the despised Moshiach].

כָּל־ All רֹ֭אַי SDBH who see me יַלְעִ֣גוּ SDBH mock לִ֑י me יַפְטִ֥ירוּ SDBH they sneer בְ֝שָׂפָ֗ה SDBH . . . יָנִ֥יעוּ SDBH and shake רֹֽאשׁ׃ SDBH their heads

All they that see me mock me; they shoot out the lip, they shake the rosh, saying,

גֹּ֣ל SDBH He trusts אֶל־ in יְהוָ֣ה SDBH Hashem/Adonoi יְפַלְּטֵ֑הוּ SDBH let the LORD deliver him יַ֝צִּילֵ֗הוּ SDBH let the LORD rescue him כִּ֘י since חָ֥פֵֽץ SDBH He delights בּֽוֹ׃ in him

He trusted in Hashem; let Hashem rescue him; let Him deliver him, since He delights in him.

9

כִּֽי־ Yet אַתָּ֣ה SDBH You גֹחִ֣י SDBH brought me forth מִבָּ֑טֶן SDBH from the womb מַ֝בְטִיחִ֗י SDBH You made me secure עַל־ at שְׁדֵ֥י SDBH breast אִמִּֽי׃ SDBH my mother’s

But Thou art He that took me out of the womb; Thou didst make me trust when I was upon the breasts of immi.

10

עָ֭לֶיךָ upon You הָשְׁלַ֣כְתִּי SDBH I was cast מֵרָ֑חֶם SDBH From birth מִבֶּ֥טֶן SDBH womb אִ֝מִּ֗י SDBH from my mother’s אֵ֣לִי SDBH have been my G-d אָֽתָּה׃ SDBH You

I was cast upon Thee from the womb; Thou art Eli from the womb of immi.

11

אַל־ Be not תִּרְחַ֣ק SDBH far מִ֭מֶּנִּי from me כִּי־ for צָרָ֣ה SDBH trouble קְרוֹבָ֑ה SDBH is near כִּי־ and אֵ֥ין SDBH there is no עוֹזֵֽר׃ SDBH one to help

Be not far from me; for tzoros is near; and there is none to help.

סְ֭בָבוּנִי SDBH surround me פָּרִ֣ים SDBH bulls רַבִּ֑ים SDBH Many אַבִּירֵ֖י SDBH strong בָשָׁ֣ן SDBH [bulls] of Bashan כִּתְּרֽוּנִי׃ SDBH encircle me

Parim rabbim (many bulls) have encompassed me; strong bulls of Bashan have beset me round about.

13

פָּצ֣וּ SDBH They open עָלַ֣י against me פִּיהֶ֑ם SDBH their jaws אַ֝רְיֵ֗ה SDBH like lions טֹרֵ֥ף SDBH and maul וְשֹׁאֵֽג׃ SDBH that roar

They opened wide their mouths upon me, like an aryeh roaring and tearing prey.

כַּמַּ֥יִם SDBH like water נִשְׁפַּכְתִּי֮ SDBH I am poured out וְהִתְפָּֽרְד֗וּ SDBH are disjointed כָּֽל־ and all עַצְמ֫וֹתָ֥י SDBH my bones הָיָ֣ה is לִ֭בִּי SDBH My heart כַּדּוֹנָ֑ג SDBH like wax נָ֝מֵ֗ס SDBH it melts away בְּת֣וֹךְ SDBH within מֵעָֽי׃ SDBH me

I am poured out like mayim, and all my atzmot are out of joint; my lev is like wax; it is melted away within me.

15

יָ֘בֵ֤שׁ SDBH is dried up כַּחֶ֨רֶשׂ׀ SDBH like a potsherd כֹּחִ֗י SDBH My strength וּ֭לְשׁוֹנִי SDBH and my tongue מֻדְבָּ֣ק SDBH sticks מַלְקוֹחָ֑י SDBH to the roof of my mouth וְֽלַעֲפַר־ SDBH in the dust מָ֥וֶת SDBH of death תִּשְׁפְּתֵֽנִי׃ SDBH You lay me

My ko'ach is dried up like baked clay; and my leshon cleaveth to my jaws; and Thou layest me in the aphar mavet (dust of death).

16

כִּ֥י For סְבָב֗וּנִי SDBH surround me כְּלָ֫בִ֥ים SDBH dogs עֲדַ֣ת SDBH a band מְ֭רֵעִים SDBH of evil men הִקִּיפ֑וּנִי SDBH encircles me כָּ֝אֲרִ֗י SDBH כָּ֭רָֽה SDBH they have pierced יָדַ֥י SDBH my hands וְרַגְלָֽי׃ SDBH and feet

For kelavim have surrounded me; the Adat Mere'im (congregation of evil men) have enclosed me; ka'aru yadai v'ragelai (they pierced my hands and my feet; see Isa 53:5; Zech 12:10 and medieval Hebrew Scripture manuscripts as well as the Targum HaShivim).

17

אֲסַפֵּ֥ר SDBH I can count כָּל־ all עַצְמוֹתָ֑י SDBH my bones הֵ֥מָּה SDBH they יַ֝בִּ֗יטוּ SDBH stare יִרְאוּ־ SDBH and gloat בִֽי׃ over me

I can count all my atzmot; the people stare and gloat at me.

18

יְחַלְּק֣וּ SDBH They divide בְגָדַ֣י SDBH my garments לָהֶ֑ם among them וְעַל־ for לְ֝בוּשִׁ֗י SDBH my clothing יַפִּ֥ילוּ SDBH and cast גוֹרָֽל׃ SDBH lots

They divide up my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast goral (lots) [Mt 27:35; Lk 23:34; Yn 19:24].

19

וְאַתָּ֣ה SDBH But You יְ֭הוָה SDBH Hashem/Adonoi אַל־ be not תִּרְחָ֑ק SDBH far off אֱ֝יָלוּתִ֗י SDBH O my Strength לְעֶזְרָ֥תִי SDBH to help me חֽוּשָׁה׃ SDBH come quickly

But be not Thou far from me, Hashem; O my strength, hasten Thee to help me.

20

הַצִּ֣ילָה SDBH Deliver מֵחֶ֣רֶב SDBH from the sword נַפְשִׁ֑י SDBH my soul מִיַּד־ SDBH from the power כֶּ֝֗לֶב SDBH of wild dogs יְחִידָתִֽי׃ SDBH my precious life

Deliver my nefesh from the cherev, my yechid (only one, only [nefesh]) from the power of the kelev (dog).

21

ה֭וֹשִׁיעֵנִי SDBH Save me מִפִּ֣י SDBH from the mouth אַרְיֵ֑ה SDBH of the lion וּמִקַּרְנֵ֖י SDBH at the horns רֵמִ֣ים SDBH of the wild oxen עֲנִיתָֽנִי׃ SDBH You have answered me

Hoshieini from the mouth of the aryeh; for Thou hast heard me from the karnayim of the wild bulls.

22

אֲסַפְּרָ֣ה SDBH I will proclaim שִׁמְךָ֣ SDBH Your name לְאֶחָ֑י SDBH to my brothers בְּת֖וֹךְ SDBH in קָהָ֣ל SDBH the assembly אֲהַלְלֶֽךָּ׃ SDBH I will praise You

I will declare Thy Shem unto my Achim; in the midst of the Kahal will I praise Thee.

23

יִרְאֵ֤י SDBH You who fear יְהוָ֨ה׀ SDBH Hashem/Adonoi הַֽלְל֗וּהוּ SDBH praise Him כָּל־ All זֶ֣רַע SDBH descendants יַעֲקֹ֣ב SDBH of Jacob כַּבְּד֑וּהוּ SDBH honor Him וְג֥וּרוּ SDBH revere Him מִ֝מֶּ֗נּוּ . . . כָּל־ All זֶ֥רַע SDBH offspring יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ SDBH of Israel

Ye that fear Hashem, praise Him; all ye Zera Ya'akov, give Him kavod; and fear Him, all ye Zera Yisroel.

24

כִּ֤י For לֹֽא־ SDBH He has not בָזָ֨ה SDBH despised וְלֹ֪א SDBH . . . שִׁקַּ֡ץ SDBH or detested עֱנ֬וּת SDBH the torment עָנִ֗י SDBH of the afflicted וְלֹא־ SDBH He has not הִסְתִּ֣יר SDBH hidden פָּנָ֣יו His face מִמֶּ֑נּוּ from him וּֽבְשַׁוְּע֖וֹ SDBH cry for help אֵלָ֣יו to his שָׁמֵֽעַ׃ SDBH but has attended

For He hath not despised nor disdained the enut ani (affliction of the afflicted); neither hath He hid His face from him; but when he cried unto Him, He heard.

25

מֵ֥אִתְּךָ֗ SDBH for You [resounds] תְֽהִלָּ֫תִ֥י SDBH My praise בְּקָהָ֥ל SDBH assembly רָ֑ב SDBH in the great נְדָרַ֥י SDBH my vows אֲ֝שַׁלֵּ֗ם SDBH I will fulfill נֶ֣גֶד before יְרֵאָֽיו׃ SDBH those who fear You

My tehillah shall be from Thee in the Kahal Rav; I will fulfill my nedar before them that fear Him.

26

יֹאכְל֬וּ SDBH will eat עֲנָוִ֨ים׀ SDBH The poor וְיִשְׂבָּ֗עוּ SDBH and be satisfied יְהַֽלְל֣וּ SDBH will praise Him יְ֭הוָה SDBH Hashem/Adonoi דֹּ֣רְשָׁ֑יו SDBH those who seek יְחִ֖י SDBH live לְבַבְכֶ֣ם SDBH May your hearts לָעַֽד׃ SDBH forever

The anavim (meek) shall eat and be satisfied; they that seek Him shall praise Hashem. Let your levav live forever!

27

יִזְכְּר֤וּ׀ SDBH will remember וְיָשֻׁ֣בוּ SDBH and turn אֶל־ to יְ֭הוָה SDBH Hashem/Adonoi כָּל־ All אַפְסֵי־ SDBH the ends אָ֑רֶץ SDBH of the earth וְיִֽשְׁתַּחֲו֥וּ SDBH will bow down לְ֝פָנֶ֗יךָ before Him כָּֽל־ All מִשְׁפְּח֥וֹת SDBH the families גּוֹיִֽם׃ SDBH of the nations

All the ends of HaAretz shall remember and turn unto Hashem; and all the mishpechot of the Goyim shall bow down in worship before Thee.

28

כִּ֣י For לַ֭יהוָה SDBH Hashem/Adonoi הַמְּלוּכָ֑ה SDBH dominion וּ֝מֹשֵׁ֗ל SDBH and He rules בַּגּוֹיִֽם׃ SDBH over the nations

For the Meluchah is Hashem's: and He is the Moshel over the Goyim.

29

אָכְל֬וּ SDBH will feast וַיִּֽשְׁתַּחֲוּ֨וּ׀ SDBH and worship כָּֽל־ All דִּשְׁנֵי־ SDBH the rich אֶ֗רֶץ SDBH of the earth לְפָנָ֣יו before Him יִ֭כְרְעוּ SDBH will kneel כָּל־ all יוֹרְדֵ֣י SDBH who go down עָפָ֑ר SDBH to the dust וְ֝נַפְשׁ֗וֹ SDBH their lives לֹ֣א SDBH even those unable חִיָּֽה׃ SDBH to preserve

All they that thrive upon HaAretz shall eat and worship; all they that go down to the aphar (dust) shall bow before Him; even he who cannot keep alive his own nefesh.

30

זֶ֥רַע SDBH Posterity יַֽעַבְדֶ֑נּוּ SDBH will serve Him יְסֻפַּ֖ר SDBH they will declare לַֽאדֹנָ֣י SDBH the Lord לַדּֽוֹר׃ SDBH to a new generation

Zera shall serve Him; it shall be told to the generation [to come] concerning Adonoi.

31

יָ֭בֹאוּ SDBH They will come וְיַגִּ֣ידוּ SDBH and proclaim צִדְקָת֑וֹ SDBH His righteousness לְעַ֥ם SDBH to a people נ֝וֹלָ֗ד SDBH yet unborn כִּ֣י all that עָשָֽׂה׃ SDBH He has done

They shall come, and shall declare His tzedek unto an Am Nolad (a [future] people that shall be born), that He hath done this.
