Iyov 31 — Hebrew–OJB Interlinear

בְּ֭רִית SDBH a covenant כָּרַ֣תִּי SDBH I have made לְעֵינָ֑י SDBH with my eyes וּמָ֥ה SDBH How then אֶ֝תְבּוֹנֵ֗ן SDBH could I gaze [with desire] עַל־ at בְּתוּלָֽה׃ SDBH a virgin

I made a brit (covenant) with mine eyes; how then look I upon a betulah?

וּמֶ֤ה׀ SDBH For what [is] חֵ֣לֶק SDBH the allotment אֱל֣וֹהַּ SDBH of G-d מִמָּ֑עַל SDBH from above וְֽנַחֲלַ֥ת SDBH or the heritage שַׁ֝דַּ֗י SDBH from the Almighty מִמְּרֹמִֽים׃ SDBH on high

For what chelek of Eloah is there from above? And what nachalah of Shaddai from on high?

הֲלֹא־ SDBH Does not אֵ֥יד SDBH disaster לְעַוָּ֑ל SDBH come to the unjust וְ֝נֵ֗כֶר SDBH and calamity לְפֹ֣עֲלֵי SDBH to the workers אָֽוֶן׃ SDBH of iniquity

Is not destruction to the wicked? And a disaster to the poalei aven (workers of wrong)?

הֲלֹא־ SDBH not ה֭וּא SDBH Does He יִרְאֶ֣ה SDBH see דְרָכָ֑י SDBH my ways וְֽכָל־ my every צְעָדַ֥י SDBH step יִסְפּֽוֹר׃ SDBH and count

Doth not He see my derech, and count all my steps?

אִם־ SDBH If הָלַ֥כְתִּי SDBH I have walked עִם־ in שָׁ֑וְא SDBH falsehood וַתַּ֖חַשׁ SDBH has rushed עַל־ to מִרְמָ֣ה SDBH deceit רַגְלִֽי׃ SDBH or my foot

If I have walked with shav (vanity, falsehood), or if my regel hath hasted to mirmah (deceit),

יִשְׁקְלֵ֥נִי SDBH let G-d weigh me בְמֹאזְנֵי־ SDBH scales צֶ֑דֶק SDBH with honest וְיֵדַ֥ע SDBH may know אֱ֝ל֗וֹהַּ SDBH that He תֻּמָּתִֽי׃ SDBH my integrity

Let me be weighed in scales of tzedek that Eloah may know mine tom (integrity).

אִ֥ם SDBH If תִּטֶּ֣ה SDBH have turned אַשֻּׁרִי֮ SDBH my steps מִנִּ֪י from הַ֫דָּ֥רֶךְ SDBH the path וְאַחַ֣ר SDBH has followed עֵ֭ינַי SDBH my eyes הָלַ֣ךְ SDBH . . . לִבִּ֑י SDBH if my heart וּ֝בְכַפַּ֗י SDBH to my hands דָּ֣בַק SDBH has stuck מֻאֽוּם׃פ SDBH or if impurity

If my step hath turned out of the derech, and mine lev walked after mine eyes, and if any mum hath cleaved to mine hands,

אֶ֭זְרְעָה SDBH what I have sown וְאַחֵ֣ר SDBH then may another יֹאכֵ֑ל SDBH eat וְֽצֶאֱצָאַ֥י SDBH and may my crops יְשֹׁרָֽשׁוּ׃ SDBH be uprooted

Then let me sow, and let acher (another) eat; yea, let my harvest be uprooted.

אִם־ SDBH If נִפְתָּ֣ה SDBH has been enticed לִ֭בִּי SDBH my heart עַל־ by אִשָּׁ֑ה SDBH wife וְעַל־ at פֶּ֖תַח SDBH his door רֵעִ֣י SDBH my neighbor’s אָרָֽבְתִּי׃ SDBH or I have lurked

If mine lev have been deceived by an isha, or if I have lurked at petach (doorway) of my re'a;

תִּטְחַ֣ן SDBH grind [grain] לְאַחֵ֣ר SDBH for another אִשְׁתִּ֑י SDBH then may my own wife וְ֝עָלֶ֗יהָ with her יִכְרְע֥וּן SDBH sleep אֲחֵרִֽין׃ SDBH and may other men

Then let my isha grind for another, and let another kneel over her.

כִּי־ For הוּא SDBH that [would be] זִמָּ֑ה SDBH a heinous crime וְהִיא SDBH - עָוֺ֥ן SDBH an iniquity פְּלִילִֽים׃ SDBH to be judged

For this is a heinous crime; yea, it is an avon to be brought before judges.

12

כִּ֤י For אֵ֣שׁ SDBH is a fire הִ֭יא SDBH it עַד־ SDBH down to אֲבַדּ֣וֹן SDBH Abaddon תֹּאכֵ֑ל SDBH that burns וּֽבְכָל־ my entire תְּב֖וּאָתִ֣י SDBH harvest תְשָׁרֵֽשׁ׃ SDBH it would root out

For it is an eish that consumeth to Abaddon, and would root out all mine increase.

13

אִם־ SDBH If אֶמְאַ֗ס SDBH I have rejected מִשְׁפַּ֣ט SDBH the cause עַ֭בְדִּי SDBH of my manservant וַאֲמָתִ֑י SDBH or maidservant בְּ֝רִבָ֗ם SDBH when they made a complaint עִמָּדִֽי׃ against me

If I did despise the mishpat (cause) of my eved or of my amah, when they contended with me,

וּמָ֣ה SDBH what אֶֽ֭עֱשֶׂה SDBH will I do כִּֽי־ when יָק֣וּם SDBH rises to judge אֵ֑ל SDBH G-d וְכִֽי־ when יִ֝פְקֹ֗ד SDBH called to account מָ֣ה SDBH How אֲשִׁיבֶֽנּוּ׃ SDBH will I answer

What then shall I do when El riseth up? And when He visiteth, what shall I answer Him?

15

הֲ‍ֽ֝לֹא־ SDBH Did not בַ֭בֶּטֶן SDBH in the womb עֹשֵׂ֣נִי SDBH He who made me עָשָׂ֑הוּ SDBH also make them וַ֝יְכֻנֶ֗נּוּ SDBH form us בָּרֶ֥חֶם SDBH in the womb אֶחָֽד׃ SDBH Did not the same One

Did not He that made me in the beten make them? And did not Echad fashion us in the rechem?

16

אִם־ SDBH If אֶ֭מְנַע SDBH I have denied מֵחֵ֣פֶץ SDBH the desires דַּלִּ֑ים SDBH of the poor וְעֵינֵ֖י SDBH eyes אַלְמָנָ֣ה SDBH or allowed the widow’s אֲכַלֶּֽה׃ SDBH to fail

If I have withheld the poor from their chefetz (desire), or have caused the eyes of the almanah to grow weary,

17

וְאֹכַ֣ל SDBH if I have eaten פִּתִּ֣י SDBH my morsel לְבַדִּ֑י SDBH alone וְלֹא־ SDBH not אָכַ֖ל SDBH sharing יָת֣וֹם SDBH with the fatherless מִמֶּֽנָּה׃ it

Or have eaten my morsel myself alone, and the yatom hath not eaten thereof;

18

כִּ֣י though מִ֭נְּעוּרַי SDBH from my youth גְּדֵלַ֣נִי SDBH I reared him כְאָ֑ב SDBH as would a father וּמִבֶּ֖טֶן SDBH womb אִמִּ֣י SDBH and from my mother’s אַנְחֶֽנָּה׃ SDBH I guided [the widow]

(For from my youth he was brought up with me, as with an av, and I have guided her from beten immi;)

19

אִם־ SDBH if אֶרְאֶ֣ה SDBH I have seen א֭וֹבֵד SDBH one perish מִבְּלִ֣י SDBH for lack לְב֑וּשׁ SDBH of clothing וְאֵ֥ין SDBH without כְּ֝ס֗וּת SDBH a cloak לָאֶבְיֽוֹן׃ SDBH or a needy man

If I have seen any oved (one perishing) for want of clothing, or any evyon (needy) without covering,

20

אִם־ SDBH if לֹ֣א SDBH has not בֵרֲכ֣וּנִי SDBH blessed me חֲלָצוֹ SDBH his heart וּמִגֵּ֥ז SDBH with the fleece כְּ֝בָשַׂי SDBH of my sheep יִתְחַמָּֽם׃ SDBH for warming him

If his heart did not bless me for warming him with the giz (fleece) of my sheep,

21

אִם־ SDBH if הֲנִיפ֣וֹתִי SDBH I have lifted עַל־ against יָת֣וֹם SDBH the fatherless יָדִ֑י SDBH up my hand כִּֽי־ because אֶרְאֶ֥ה SDBH I saw בַ֝שַּׁ֗עַר SDBH in the gate עֶזְרָתִֽי׃ SDBH that I had support

If I have lifted up my yad against the yatom, when I saw my influence in the sha'ar (gate, court);

22

כְּ֭תֵפִי SDBH vvv מִשִּׁכְמָ֣ה SDBH from my shoulder תִפּ֑וֹל SDBH fall וְ֝אֶזְרֹעִ֗י SDBH then may my arm מִקָּנָ֥ה SDBH from its socket תִשָּׁבֵֽר׃ SDBH and be torn

Then let mine arm fall from my shoulder, and mine zero'a be broken from its socket.

23

כִּ֤י For פַ֣חַד SDBH terrifies אֵ֭לַי me אֵ֣יד SDBH calamity אֵ֑ל SDBH from G-d וּ֝מִשְּׂאֵת֗וֹ SDBH and His splendor לֹ֣א SDBH I cannot אוּכָֽל׃ SDBH overpower

For destruction from El was a pachad to me, and by reason of His majesty I could not endure.

24

אִם־ SDBH If שַׂ֣מְתִּי SDBH I have put זָהָ֣ב SDBH in gold כִּסְלִ֑י SDBH my trust וְ֝לַכֶּ֗תֶם SDBH pure gold אָמַ֥רְתִּי SDBH or called מִבְטַחִֽי׃ SDBH my security

If I have made zahav my hope, or have said to the fine gold, Thou art my security,

25

אִם־ SDBH if אֶ֭שְׂמַח SDBH I have rejoiced כִּי־ in רַ֣ב SDBH my great חֵילִ֑י SDBH wealth וְכִֽי־ because כַ֝בִּ֗יר SDBH so much מָצְאָ֥ה SDBH had gained יָדִֽי׃ SDBH my hand

If I rejoice because my wealth was rav (great), and because mine yad had gotten much,

26

אִם־ SDBH if אֶרְאֶ֣ה SDBH I have beheld א֖וֹר SDBH the sun כִּ֣י - יָהֵ֑ל SDBH in its radiance וְ֝יָרֵ֗חַ SDBH or the moon יָקָ֥ר SDBH in splendor הֹלֵֽךְ׃ SDBH moving

If I beheld the ohr when it shined, or the yarei'ach moving in splendor,

27

וַיִּ֣פְתְּ SDBH enticed בַּסֵּ֣תֶר SDBH was secretly לִבִּ֑י SDBH so that my heart וַתִּשַּׁ֖ק SDBH threw a kiss יָדִ֣י SDBH and my hand לְפִֽי׃ SDBH from my mouth

And my lev hath been secretly enticed, or my mouth hath kissed my yad [in heathen worship];

28

גַּם־ SDBH would also be ה֭וּא SDBH this עָוֺ֣ן SDBH an iniquity פְּלִילִ֑י SDBH to be judged כִּֽי־ for כִחַ֖שְׁתִּי SDBH I would have denied לָאֵ֣ל SDBH G-d מִמָּֽעַל׃ SDBH on high

This also were an avon to be punished by the judge; for then I would have been unfaithful, denying El that is on high.

29

אִם־ SDBH If אֶ֭שְׂמַח SDBH I have rejoiced בְּפִ֣יד SDBH ruin מְשַׂנְאִ֑י SDBH in my enemy’s וְ֝הִתְעֹרַ֗רְתִּי SDBH or exulted כִּֽי־ when מְצָ֥אוֹ SDBH befell him רָֽע׃ SDBH evil

If I rejoice at the misfortune of him that hated me, or gloated when rah found him,

30

וְלֹא־ SDBH I have not נָתַ֣תִּי allowed לַחֲטֹ֣א SDBH to sin חִכִּ֑י SDBH my mouth לִשְׁאֹ֖ל SDBH by asking for בְּאָלָ֣ה SDBH with a curse נַפְשֽׁוֹ׃ SDBH his life

Neither have I allowed my mouth to sin by invoking a curse to his nefesh.

31

אִם־ SDBH if לֹ֣א SDBH have not אָ֭מְרוּ SDBH said מְתֵ֣י SDBH the men אָהֳלִ֑י SDBH of my house מִֽי־ SDBH Who יִתֵּ֥ן is there מִ֝בְּשָׂר֗וֹ SDBH . . . לֹ֣א SDBH who has not נִשְׂבָּֽע׃ SDBH had his fill

Have the men of my ohel not said, Where can we find one who has not been sated with his basar (meat)?

32

בַּ֭חוּץ SDBH on the street לֹא־ SDBH [but] no יָלִ֣ין SDBH had to lodge גֵּ֑ר SDBH stranger דְּ֝לָתַ֗י SDBH for my door לָאֹ֥רַח SDBH to the traveler אֶפְתָּֽח׃ SDBH has been open

The stranger did not spend the night in the street, but I opened my delet to the ger.

33

אִם־ SDBH if כִּסִּ֣יתִי SDBH I have covered כְאָדָ֣ם SDBH like Adam פְּשָׁעָ֑י SDBH my transgressions לִטְמ֖וֹן SDBH by hiding בְּחֻבִּ֣י SDBH in my heart עֲוֺֽנִי׃ SDBH my guilt

If I concealed my peysha like Adam, by hiding mine avon in my heart,

34

כִּ֤י because אֶֽעֱר֨וֹץ׀ SDBH feared הָ֘מ֤וֹן SDBH the crowds רַבָּ֗ה SDBH I greatly וּבוּז־ SDBH and the contempt מִשְׁפָּח֥וֹת SDBH of the clans יְחִתֵּ֑נִי SDBH terrified me וָ֝אֶדֹּ֗ם SDBH so that I kept silent לֹא־ SDBH and would not אֵ֥צֵא SDBH go outside פָֽתַח׃ SDBH . . .

Did I fear a great multitude, or did the contempt of mishpekhot terrify me, that I kept silence, and went not out of doors?

35

מִ֤י SDBH Oh, that יִתֶּן־ I had לִ֨י׀ שֹׁ֘מֵ֤עַֽ SDBH one to hear לִ֗י me הֶן־ Here is תָּ֭וִי SDBH my signature שַׁדַּ֣י SDBH Let the Almighty יַעֲנֵ֑נִי SDBH answer me וְסֵ֥פֶר SDBH an indictment כָּ֝תַ֗ב SDBH compose אִ֣ישׁ SDBH let my accuser רִיבִֽי׃ SDBH . . .

Oh that one would hear me! See, my tav [signature], that Shaddai would answer me, and that mine adversary had written a sefer [of indictment];

36

אִם־ SDBH Surely לֹ֣א SDBH . . . עַל־ on שִׁ֭כְמִי SDBH my shoulder אֶשָּׂאֶ֑נּוּ SDBH I would carry it אֶֽעֶנְדֶ֖נּוּ SDBH and wear עֲטָר֣וֹת SDBH it like a crown לִֽי׃

Surely I would carry it upon my shoulder, and bind it to me like atarot (crowns).

37

מִסְפַּ֣ר SDBH account צְ֭עָדַי SDBH of all my steps אַגִּידֶ֑נּוּ SDBH I would give כְּמוֹ־ SDBH like נָ֝גִ֗יד SDBH a prince אֲקָרֲבֶֽנּוּ׃ SDBH I would approach Him

I would declare unto Him the number of my steps; like a nagid (prince) would I go near unto Him.

38

אִם־ SDBH if עָ֭לַי against me אַדְמָתִ֣י SDBH my land תִזְעָ֑ק SDBH cries out וְ֝יַ֗חַד SDBH together תְּלָמֶ֥יהָ SDBH and its furrows יִבְכָּיֽוּן׃ SDBH weep

If my adamah cry against me, or if the furrows had wept together,

39

אִם־ SDBH if כֹּ֭חָהּ SDBH its produce אָכַ֣לְתִּי SDBH I have devoured בְלִי־ SDBH without כָ֑סֶף SDBH payment וְנֶ֖פֶשׁ SDBH or broken the spirit בְּעָלֶ֣יהָ SDBH of its tenants הִפָּֽחְתִּי׃ SDBH . . .

If I have eaten the yield thereof without kesef (payment), or have broken the nefesh of the tenants thereof,

40

תַּ֤חַת SDBH instead of חִטָּ֨ה׀ SDBH wheat יֵ֥צֵא SDBH grow ח֗וֹחַ SDBH then let briers וְתַֽחַת־ SDBH instead of שְׂעֹרָ֥ה SDBH barley בָאְשָׁ֑ה SDBH and stinkweed תַּ֝֗מּוּ SDBH Thus conclude דִּבְרֵ֥י SDBH the words אִיּֽוֹב׃פ SDBH of Job

Let thistles grow instead of chittim (wheat), and weed instead of barley. The divrei Iyov are ended.
