AT OUR NEW AFII COMMENTARY ON ROMANS AND STUDY GREEK AND ROMANS AT THE SAME
TIME
This Hebrew word has
to do with your call. In 1971 I was already a new creature
in Moshiach, but I was
grappling with this very idea, the call of G-d on my life. I had
gone back to Rav Sha'ul had been "kicking against the
goads" (resisting Hashem), and yet all the while G-d had been
providentially preparing him for the ministry. His Roman citizenship
was a marvelous protection G-d had set in place to protect a controversial
darshan (preacher) in the shuls of
the Diaspora. His parnasah
(livelihood) as a tentmaker served him well in his congregation-planting
travels so that he
would not be a burden on new
believers. This too was from Hashem.
What are YOUR providential assets that G-d may yet
use to prepare you and qualify you to go into the highways and byways and
persuade the lost sheep of the House of Israel and the wandering lost
lambs of the world to come back to the Shepherd of their nashamah? However, it is good to remember the warning
implicit in the fact that before Moshiach preached to all of Israel, he first had to preach
to the devil. "Simon says" is a game, but Simon the
Magician and Simon the Shliach were engaged in a
repartee about the ministry that was no game. We read about this would-be
minister, Simon the Magician, and his encounter with Moshiach's Shliach, Simon,
in Ac 8:9-24. Note the different paradigms (Act 8:9-24)for
ministry contrasted here.
Simon the Magician thinks that ministry is "wowing the crowds" and
he seems to be collecting a tremendous amount of money and personal
adulation from his bewitching control over his easily-led audience. Would-be ministers like this are
usually members of their own fan clubs, and have a very high view of who
they are. Simon the Shliach, of course, knew all too well who he was: a
miserable sinner who had denied the L-rd. And Shimon Kefa could truly say to Simon the Magician, Silver and
gold have I none. What he did
have was the Ruach Hakodesh, and by the grace of G-d he was a
conduit for the Ruach
Hakodesh to powerfully fall on true believers so that signs and
wonders could follow the preaching of those who believed. Simon the Magician was "money
oriented," thinking money was the key for the growth of the Kehillah in Today religion is big business. Today some are into chief seats
and titles, CEO pay packages and being called "Doctor PhD Rabbi," and
receiving the praise of men.
Listen, honor from men we take not (Yn 5:41-44; and 1Th 2:6).
Street preaching? Nursing home ministry?
Prison ministry? O, no, no, no, no,
no, we wouldn't dirty our hands with it. No money there. No offerings there. Who needs jail bird leers and
alta kaka smells and street corner spittle and
contempt when, if you make a name for yourself and someone will give it
out that "this one is the great power of G-d" (Ac 8:10) what a mansion
of upward mobility there is waiting for such a Simon the Magician as
yourself! Simon the Shliach had to have all that demonic uncleanness
sifted out of him. To prepare for the ministry it is necessary for Simon
to be turned over to Satan to be sifted like wheat. Looking at the process from
another angle, the L-rd
has to prune you, cut back the dead wood, so to say, so that He can
get Simon out of Simon, which is the only way He can make a "Simon" like
you fruitful in soul winning.
Whenever Simon wanted to start his own fan club he remembered with
horror and fear the cock-crow cowardly nearly (MJ 10:26-29) apostate
[for which no sacrifice remains but only a fearful horizon of firey judgment!] denier of the
L-rd he had been and how he had let his Teacher down, and "To whom much is
given, much is required." No,
Simon would not be joining any Simon fan club. Today we have anti-Charismatic
teachers who craft a theology
that despises prophesying and tells Philip's four virgin daughter
prophetesses to shut up and stay out of the "for men only" pulpit. So you
ride the New York subways and you wonder: How will these "women at the
well" (Yn 4) find Yeshua and the mayim chayim
(living water of
the Ruach Hakodesh
that Moshiach promises) unless clean ministers,
and here especially we need women who are called into the
ministry (like Priscilla), who can counsel these modern tattooed ill-clad
ladies on the New York subways and teach them and bring them to the
marvelous joy of their true husband and redeemer, Moshiach Tzidkeinu, the
knowledge of whom sets us right with G-d, for we exchange with him his
righteousness for our inquities, and he
mercifully carries away our sins.
A minister must be clean and know how to control his own vessel and
hold on (1Th 4:4)
and also hold on to the text of Scripture (2 Th
2:15), keeping the
reality of the original inerrant words always before
his eyes in the virtual reality of the helmet (1Th 5:8) of his
salvation. At the season of the High Holy Days, we
need to remember that BY KNOWLEDGE OF HIM (MOSHIACH) SHALL MY RIGHTEOUS
ONE JUSTIFY (MAKE RIGHTEOUS) MANY, HE THE SIN OF MANY SHALL CARRY AWAY
LIKE THE SCAPEGOAT SHALL CARRY AWAY ON HIM ALL THEIR INIQUITIES (IS 53:11, SANHEDRIN 98B,
LV
16:22) When a minister is preparing for the
ministry, an investment is made by his teacher. Woe to the student minister if he
squanders that investment.
Simon's pride had to be pruned and cut away so that he would not
squander the investment made in him by the Moshiach, his teacher. The Samaritans had to learn that
they must not squander the investment made in them by Philippos and the Shlichim
Shimon (Simon) and Yochanan (see Ac chp 8). Woe is me if I squander the investment
made in my ministry by Dr. Donald Anderson McGavran.
Believe me, when he personally read and corrected the manuscript of
EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO
GROW A MESSIANIC SYNAGOGUE, he had other things he might have been
doing with his time. That
year (1974) he was on the
phone with Billy Graham arranging to be the Key Note Speaker of the
historic Lausanne Conference. See Commentary on Romans
11:25 to see how this incident is illustrative of the truth of
Scripture. Now, if I had wasted my teacher's time by turning out to be a
Simon the Magician kind of phoney minister, it
would have been too bad for me, believe me (1Th 3:5). Let me inject something here. On the first and second journeys
we read about in Acts, there were important eyewitnesses that accompanied
Rav Sha'ul so that
public testimonies for the Moshiach would have
had impressive attestation.
John Mark had
probably been an eye-witness of the arrest of Moshiach, for if Mk 14:51-52 is not
his humble writer's "signature," why would he include this otherwise
incidental material in his narrative? Also look at Silas, the Jewish
prophet who took the place of John Mark and Barnabus in the second journey of Rav Sha'ul. Silas was a teacher who had been
an eye-witness from the earliest days of the Jerusalem Kehillah of Moshiach. If the Eleven had been fabricating
their testimony of Moshiach's eye-witnessed
Resurrection appearances, this man Silas would have been in a position to
know. He was there to hear
everything from everyone from the very beginning of everything. And he is there with Rav Sha'ul so that
everywhere new congregations are planted, the core members have the
opportunity to hear from such an eye-witness. So when Rav Sha'ul warns about the
tempter tempting the Thessalonians and our (here he includes Silas) labor
being in vain, Rav Sha'ul is talking about these Thessalonians not
fulfilling the ministry call on their lives and thus wasting Silas's time,
Rav Sha'ul's time,
Moshiach's time, G-d's
time, the time of all the investment in them that had been made for the
sake of their ministry formation, the precious time invested in their
future ministry. Woe to me if
I had wasted Dr. Donald McGavran's time (1Th
3:5). G-d didn't waste Silas's time. When he and Rav Sha'ul were having
trouble getting Europeans to listen to them, in fact so much trouble they
were even winding up in jail (Ac 16:26), G-d came
along behind them with an earthquake and shook up everything so their
message would get a fair hearing.
In America few in the "Big Easy" New Orleans were interested in
what the little Silas-type teachers might have to say about Moshiach's salvation, so G-d came along behind them
with a hurricane and shook up everything so the message could get some
attention. And so everything
that can be shaken will be shaken before Moshiach comes (Hag
2:7). Not many of you should be teachers,
because the teacher will be more strictly judged. If you cause a babe in the L-rd to
stumble by leading them in the wrong direction, it would be better if
a chain were put around your neck and you were thrown into the sea (Mk 9:42). Moshiach didn't entrust his teaching to money-hungry
Magician Simons. (Yn 2:24). The woman at the well tried to get
into a phoney religious spirit with Moshiach (Yn 4:20), but
before he would get into revealing the knowledge of himself to her (Yn 4:25-26; and Isa 53:11), he caused her to
have to deal with the besetting sin in her life (Yn 4:16-18), for she had spent enough time walking in
lasciviousness, lusts, and the gross immorality of the Goyim. Like the man sick 38 years, it was
time for her to be done with the sick defilements of the flesh, lest
something worse befall her (Yn 5:14). As Evan Roberts said in 1904 before
80,000 people came to faith in This is the will of G-d, your
sanctification (1Th 4:3). This is the will of G-d, that you give
thanks in all things. (1Th 5:18) This is the will of G-d, that you abstain from fornication. (1Th
4:3) Like the Brooklyn Orthodox Jews examining
the Estrogim for Sukkot, we need to ask G-d to examine us and give us a
faultless heart (1Th 3:13) so
that we could be found faultless with kedushah
in spirit, soul, and body at the Bias HaMoshiach
(1Th 5:23).
See to it that you fulfill your ministry (Co
4:17). Read the following story and the other story and ask yourself if
thirty years of open air ministry and Scripture study has been a fruitful
pursuit.
