Mishle 3 — Hebrew–OJB Interlinear

1

בְּ֭נִי SDBH My son תּוֹרָתִ֣י SDBH my teaching אַל־ do not תִּשְׁכָּ֑ח SDBH forget וּ֝מִצְוֺתַ֗י SDBH my commandments יִצֹּ֥ר SDBH keep לִבֶּֽךָ׃ SDBH but let your heart

Beni (my son), forget not my torah; but let thine lev keep my mitzvot;

2

כִּ֤י for אֹ֣רֶךְ SDBH length יָ֭מִים SDBH to your days וּשְׁנ֣וֹת SDBH years חַיִּ֑ים SDBH to your life וְ֝שָׁל֗וֹם SDBH and peace יוֹסִ֥יפוּ SDBH they will add לָֽךְ׃

For orekh yamim (length of days), and shnot chayyim, and shalom, shall they add to thee.

חֶ֥סֶד SDBH let loving devotion וֶאֱמֶ֗ת SDBH or faithfulness אַֽל־ Never יַעַ֫זְבֻ֥ךָ SDBH leave you קָשְׁרֵ֥ם SDBH bind עַל־ them גַּרְגְּרוֹתֶ֑יךָ SDBH around your neck כָּ֝תְבֵ֗ם SDBH write them עַל־ on ל֥וּחַ SDBH the tablet לִבֶּֽךָ׃ SDBH of your heart

Let not chesed and emes forsake thee; bind them about thy neck; write them upon the luach (tablet) of thine lev;

וּמְצָא־ SDBH Then you will find חֵ֖ן SDBH favor וְשֵֽׂכֶל־ SDBH and high regard ט֑וֹב SDBH . . . בְּעֵינֵ֖י SDBH in the sight אֱלֹהִ֣ים SDBH of G-d וְאָדָֽם׃פ SDBH and man

So shalt thou find chen and seichel tov in the eyes of Elohim and adam.

בְּטַ֣ח SDBH Trust אֶל־ in יְ֭הוָה SDBH Hashem/Adonoi בְּכָל־ with all לִבֶּ֑ךָ SDBH your heart וְאֶל־ on בִּֽ֝ינָתְךָ֗ SDBH your own understanding אַל־ not תִּשָּׁעֵֽן׃ SDBH and lean

Trust in Hashem with all thine lev, and lean not unto thine own binah (understanding).

בְּכָל־ in all דְּרָכֶ֥יךָ SDBH your ways דָעֵ֑הוּ SDBH acknowledge Him וְ֝ה֗וּא SDBH and He יְיַשֵּׁ֥ר SDBH will make אֹֽרְחֹתֶֽיךָ׃ SDBH your paths {straight}

In all thy drakhim acknowledge Him, and He shall make yosher thy orkhot (paths).

אַל־ not תְּהִ֣י Be חָכָ֣ם SDBH wise בְּעֵינֶ֑יךָ SDBH in your own eyes יְרָ֥א SDBH fear אֶת־ SDBH - יְ֝הוָ֗ה SDBH Hashem/Adonoi וְס֣וּר SDBH and turn away מֵרָֽע׃ SDBH from evil

Be not chacham in thine own eyes; fear Hashem, and depart from rah.

8

רִ֭פְאוּת SDBH healing תְּהִ֣י This will bring לְשָׁרֶּ֑ךָ SDBH to your body וְ֝שִׁקּ֗וּי SDBH and refreshment לְעַצְמוֹתֶֽיךָ׃ SDBH to your bones

It shall be rife'ut (health) to thy navel, and marrow to thy atzmot.

9

כַּבֵּ֣ד SDBH Honor אֶת־ SDBH - יְ֭הוָה SDBH Hashem/Adonoi מֵהוֹנֶ֑ךָ SDBH with your wealth וּ֝מֵרֵאשִׁ֗ית SDBH and with the firstfruits כָּל־ of all תְּבוּאָתֶֽךָ׃ SDBH your harvest

Honor Hashem with thy substance, and with the reshit (firstfruit) of all thine increase;

10

וְיִמָּלְא֣וּ SDBH will be filled אֲסָמֶ֣יךָ SDBH then your barns שָׂבָ֑ע SDBH with plenty וְ֝תִיר֗וֹשׁ SDBH with new wine יְקָבֶ֥יךָ SDBH and your vats יִפְרֹֽצוּ׃פ SDBH will overflow

So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy vats shall burst out with tirosh.

11

מוּסַ֣ר SDBH the discipline יְ֭הוָה SDBH Hashem/Adonoi בְּנִ֣י SDBH My son אַל־ do not תִּמְאָ֑ס SDBH reject וְאַל־ and do not תָּ֝קֹ֗ץ SDBH loathe בְּתוֹכַחְתּֽוֹ׃ SDBH His rebuke

Beni (my son), despise not the musar Hashem; neither be weary of His tokhakhah (reproof);

12

כִּ֤י for אֶ֥ת SDBH - אֲשֶׁ֣ר SDBH the one יֶאֱהַ֣ב SDBH He loves יְהוָ֣ה SDBH Hashem/Adonoi יוֹכִ֑יחַ SDBH disciplines וּ֝כְאָ֗ב SDBH as [does] a father אֶת־ SDBH - בֵּ֥ן SDBH the son יִרְצֶֽה׃ SDBH [in whom] he delights

For whom Hashem loveth, He correcteth; even as an av the ben in whom he delighteth.

13

אַשְׁרֵ֣י SDBH Blessed אָ֭דָם SDBH [is] the man מָצָ֣א SDBH who finds חָכְמָ֑ה SDBH wisdom וְ֝אָדָ֗ם SDBH the man יָפִ֥יק SDBH who acquires תְּבוּנָֽה׃ SDBH understanding

Ashrei (happy) is the man that findeth chochmah, and the man that getteth tevunah (understanding).

14

כִּ֤י for ט֣וֹב SDBH she is more סַ֭חְרָהּ SDBH profitable מִסְּחַר־ SDBH . . . כָּ֑סֶף SDBH than silver וּ֝מֵחָר֗וּץ SDBH than fine gold תְּבוּאָתָֽהּ׃ SDBH and her gain [is better]

For the gain of it is better than the gain of kesef, and the increase thereof than fine gold.

15

יְקָ֣רָה SDBH is more precious הִ֭יא SDBH She מִפְּנִיִּים SDBH than rubies וְכָל־ nothing חֲ֝פָצֶ֗יךָ SDBH you desire לֹ֣א SDBH . . . יִֽשְׁווּ־ SDBH compares בָֽהּ׃ with her

She is more precious than peninim (pearls); and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her.

16

אֹ֣רֶךְ SDBH Long יָ֭מִים SDBH life בִּֽימִינָ֑הּ SDBH is in her right hand בִּ֝שְׂמֹאולָ֗הּ SDBH in her left hand עֹ֣שֶׁר SDBH [are] riches וְכָבֽוֹד׃ SDBH and honor

Orekh yamim is in her right hand; and in her left hand osher and kavod.

17

דְּרָכֶ֥יהָ SDBH All her ways דַרְכֵי־ SDBH . . . נֹ֑עַם SDBH are pleasant וְֽכָל־ and all נְתִ֖יבוֹתֶ֣יהָ SDBH her paths שָׁלֽוֹם׃ SDBH [are] peaceful

Her drakhim are drakhim of pleasantness, and all her netivot (trodden paths) are shalom.

18

עֵץ־ SDBH is a tree חַיִּ֣ים SDBH of life הִ֭יא SDBH She לַמַּחֲזִיקִ֣ים SDBH to those who embrace בָּ֑הּ her וְֽתֹמְכֶ֥יהָ SDBH and those who lay hold of her מְאֻשָּֽׁר׃פ SDBH are blessed

She is an Etz Chayyim (Tree of Life) to them that lay hold upon her; and me'usher (blessed) is every one that holdeth her fast.

19

יְֽהוָ֗ה SDBH Hashem/Adonoi בְּחָכְמָ֥ה SDBH by wisdom יָֽסַד־ SDBH founded אָ֑רֶץ SDBH the earth כּוֹנֵ֥ן SDBH and established שָׁ֝מַ֗יִם SDBH the heavens בִּתְבוּנָֽה׃ SDBH by understanding

Hashem by chochmah hath founded Eretz (Earth); by tevunah (understanding) hath He established Shomayim.

20

בְּ֭דַעְתּוֹ SDBH By His knowledge תְּהוֹמ֣וֹת SDBH the watery depths נִבְקָ֑עוּ SDBH were broken open וּ֝שְׁחָקִ֗ים SDBH and the clouds יִרְעֲפוּ־ SDBH dripped טָֽל׃ SDBH with dew

By His da'as (knowledge) the tehomot (oceanic depths) were divided, and the clouds drop down the tal (dew).

21

בְּ֭נִי SDBH My son אַל־ do not יָלֻ֣זוּ SDBH lose מֵעֵינֶ֑יךָ SDBH sight of this נְצֹ֥ר SDBH Preserve תֻּ֝שִׁיָּ֗ה SDBH sound judgment וּמְזִמָּֽה׃ SDBH and discernment

Beni (my son), let not them depart from thine eyes; keep sound judgment and mezimah (discretion);

22

וְיִֽהְי֣וּ They will be חַיִּ֣ים SDBH life לְנַפְשֶׁ֑ךָ SDBH to your soul וְ֝חֵ֗ן SDBH and adornment לְגַרְגְּרֹתֶֽיךָ׃ SDBH to your neck

So shall they be chayyim unto thy nefesh, and chen to thy neck.

23

אָ֤ז SDBH Then תֵּלֵ֣ךְ SDBH you will go לָבֶ֣טַח SDBH in safety דַּרְכֶּ֑ךָ SDBH on your way וְ֝רַגְלְךָ֗ SDBH and your foot לֹ֣א SDBH will not תִגּֽוֹף׃ SDBH stumble

Then shalt thou walk in thy derech safely, and thy regel shall not stumble.

24

אִם־ SDBH When תִּשְׁכַּ֥ב SDBH you lie down לֹֽא־ SDBH you will not תִפְחָ֑ד SDBH be afraid וְ֝שָׁכַבְתָּ֗ SDBH when you rest וְֽעָרְבָ֥ה SDBH will be sweet שְׁנָתֶֽךָ׃ SDBH your sleep

When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid; when thou liest down, thy sheynah (sleep) shall be sweet.

25

אַל־ Do not תִּ֭ירָא SDBH fear מִפַּ֣חַד SDBH danger פִּתְאֹ֑ם SDBH sudden וּמִשֹּׁאַ֥ת SDBH or the ruin רְ֝שָׁעִ֗ים SDBH the wicked כִּ֣י that תָבֹֽא׃ SDBH overtakes

Be not afraid of sudden pachad (terror), neither of the desolation of the resha'im (wicked ones), when it cometh.

26

כִּֽי־ for יְ֭הוָה SDBH Hashem/Adonoi יִהְיֶ֣ה will be בְכִסְלֶ֑ךָ SDBH your confidence וְשָׁמַ֖ר SDBH and will keep רַגְלְךָ֣ SDBH your foot מִלָּֽכֶד׃ SDBH from the snare

For Hashem shall be thy confidence, and shall be shomer over thy regel from the snare.

27

אַל־ Do not תִּמְנַע־ SDBH withhold ט֥וֹב SDBH good מִבְּעָלָ֑יו SDBH from the deserving בִּהְי֨וֹת when it is לְאֵ֖ל SDBH power יָדֶיךָ SDBH within your לַעֲשֽׂוֹת׃ SDBH to act

Withhold not tov from them to whom it is due, when it is in the power of thine yad to do it.

28

אַל־ Do not תֹּ֘אמַ֤ר SDBH tell לְרֵעֶיךָ SDBH your neighbor לֵ֣ךְ SDBH Come וָ֭שׁוּב SDBH back וּמָחָ֥ר SDBH tomorrow אֶתֵּ֗ן [and] I will provide וְיֵ֣שׁ when you already have the means אִתָּֽךְ׃ SDBH . . .

Say not unto thy neighbor, Go, and come again, and makhar (tomorrow) I will give; when thou hast it by thee.

29

אַל־ Do not תַּחֲרֹ֣שׁ SDBH evil עַל־ against רֵעֲךָ֣ SDBH your neighbor רָעָ֑ה SDBH devise וְהֽוּא־ SDBH for he יוֹשֵׁ֖ב SDBH dwells לָבֶ֣טַח SDBH trustfully אִתָּֽךְ׃ SDBH beside you

Devise not ra'ah against thy re'a, seeing he dwelleth securely by thee.

30

אַל־ Do not תָּרוֹב SDBH accuse עִם־ . . . אָדָ֣ם SDBH a man חִנָּ֑ם SDBH without cause אִם־ SDBH when לֹ֖א SDBH you no גְמָלְךָ֣ SDBH he has done רָעָֽה׃ SDBH harm

Strive not with adam without cause, if he have done thee no ra'ah.

31

אַל־ Do not תְּ֭קַנֵּא SDBH envy בְּאִ֣ישׁ SDBH man חָמָ֑ס SDBH a violent וְאַל־ . . . תִּ֝בְחַ֗ר SDBH or choose בְּכָל־ any דְּרָכָֽיו׃ SDBH of his ways

Envy thou not the ish chamas, and choose none of his drakhim.

32

כִּ֤י for תוֹעֲבַ֣ת SDBH detests יְהוָ֣ה SDBH Hashem/Adonoi נָל֑וֹז SDBH the perverse וְֽאֶת־ SDBH . . . יְשָׁרִ֥ים SDBH to the upright סוֹדֽוֹ׃ SDBH but He is a friend

For the perverse person is to'avat (detestable) to Hashem; but His sod (secret, intimate counsel) is with the yesharim (upright ones).

33

מְאֵרַ֣ת SDBH The curse יְ֭הוָה SDBH Hashem/Adonoi בְּבֵ֣ית SDBH is on the house רָשָׁ֑ע SDBH of the wicked וּנְוֵ֖ה SDBH the home צַדִּיקִ֣ים SDBH of the righteous יְבָרֵֽךְ׃ SDBH but He blesses

The curse of Hashem is in the bais of the rasha; but He puts a bracha on the dwelling of the tzaddikim.

34

אִם־ SDBH - לַלֵּצִ֥ים SDBH mocks הֽוּא־ SDBH He יָלִ֑יץ SDBH the mockers וְלַעֲנִיִּים SDBH to the humble יִתֶּן־ but gives חֵֽן׃ SDBH grace

Surely He scorneth the scorners; but He giveth chen (grace, favor) unto the anayim (lowly, humble ones).

35

כָּ֭בוֹד SDBH honor חֲכָמִ֣ים SDBH The wise יִנְחָ֑לוּ SDBH will inherit וּ֝כְסִילִ֗ים SDBH but fools מֵרִ֥ים SDBH are held up קָלֽוֹן׃פ SDBH to shame

The chachamim shall inherit kavod, but shame shall be the promotion of kesilim (fools).
