Mishle 4 — Hebrew–OJB Interlinear

שִׁמְע֣וּ SDBH Listen בָ֭נִים SDBH my sons מ֣וּסַר SDBH instruction אָ֑ב SDBH to a father’s וְ֝הַקְשִׁ֗יבוּ SDBH pay attention לָדַ֥עַת SDBH and gain בִּינָֽה׃ SDBH understanding

Hear, ye banim, the musar (instruction, discipline) of an av, and attend to know binah (understanding).

כִּ֤י For לֶ֣קַח SDBH teaching ט֭וֹב SDBH sound נָתַ֣תִּי I give לָכֶ֑ם you תּֽ֝וֹרָתִ֗י SDBH my directive אַֽל־ do not תַּעֲזֹֽבוּ׃ SDBH abandon

For I give you lekach tov (good doctrine, good instruction), forsake ye not my torah.

כִּי־ When בֵ֭ן SDBH a son הָיִ֣יתִי I was לְאָבִ֑י SDBH to my father רַ֥ךְ SDBH tender וְ֝יָחִ֗יד SDBH and the only child לִפְנֵ֥י of אִמִּֽי׃ SDBH my mother

For I was ben to avi, tender and yachid (an only child) before immi.

וַיֹּרֵ֗נִי SDBH he taught וַיֹּ֥אמֶר SDBH and said לִ֗י me יִֽתְמָךְ־ SDBH lay hold דְּבָרַ֥י SDBH of my words לִבֶּ֑ךָ SDBH Let your heart שְׁמֹ֖ר SDBH keep מִצְוֺתַ֣י SDBH my commands וֶֽחְיֵֽה׃ SDBH and you will live

He taught me also, and said unto me, Let thine lev retain my words; be shomer over my mitzvot, and live.

קְנֵ֣ה SDBH Get חָ֭כְמָה SDBH wisdom קְנֵ֣ה SDBH get בִינָ֑ה SDBH understanding אַל־ do not תִּשְׁכַּ֥ח SDBH forget וְאַל־ . . . תֵּ֝֗ט SDBH or turn from them מֵֽאִמְרֵי־ SDBH my words פִֽי׃ SDBH . . .

Acquire chochmah, acquire binah (understanding); forget it not; neither turn from the words of my peh (mouth).

אַל־ Do not תַּעַזְבֶ֥הָ SDBH forsake [wisdom] וְתִשְׁמְרֶ֑ךָּ SDBH and she will preserve you אֱהָבֶ֥הָ SDBH love her וְתִצְּרֶֽךָּ׃ SDBH and she will guard you

Forsake her not, and she shall be shomer over thee; love her, and she shall protect thee.

רֵאשִׁ֣ית SDBH is supreme חָ֭כְמָה SDBH Wisdom קְנֵ֣ה SDBH so acquire חָכְמָ֑ה SDBH wisdom וּבְכָל־ And whatever קִ֝נְיָנְךָ֗ SDBH you may acquire קְנֵ֣ה SDBH gain בִינָֽה׃ SDBH understanding

Chochmah is the principal thing; therefore get chochmah, and with all thy getting get binah (understanding).

סַלְסְלֶ֥הָ SDBH Prize her וּֽתְרוֹמְמֶ֑ךָּ SDBH and she will exalt you תְּ֝כַבֵּ֗דְךָ SDBH she will honor you כִּ֣י if תְחַבְּקֶֽנָּה׃ SDBH you embrace her

Exalt her, and she shall promote thee; she shall honor thee with kavod, when thou dost embrace her.

9

תִּתֵּ֣ן She will set לְ֭רֹאשְׁךָ SDBH on your head לִוְיַת־ SDBH a garland חֵ֑ן SDBH of grace עֲטֶ֖רֶת SDBH with a crown תִּפְאֶ֣רֶת SDBH of beauty תְּמַגְּנֶֽךָּ׃ SDBH she will present you

She shall give to thine head a garland of chen; an ateret (crown) of tiferet (glory) shall she present to thee.

10

שְׁמַ֣ע SDBH Listen בְּ֭נִי SDBH my son וְקַ֣ח SDBH and receive אֲמָרָ֑י SDBH my words וְיִרְבּ֥וּ will be many לְ֝ךָ֗ - שְׁנ֣וֹת SDBH and the years חַיִּֽים׃ SDBH of your life

Hear, O beni (my son), and receive my sayings; and thy shnot chayyim shall be many.

11

בְּדֶ֣רֶךְ SDBH in the way חָ֭כְמָה SDBH of wisdom הֹרֵתִ֑יךָ SDBH I will guide you הִ֝דְרַכְתִּ֗יךָ SDBH I will lead you בְּמַעְגְּלֵי־ SDBH paths יֹֽשֶׁר׃ SDBH on straight

I have taught thee in the derech chochmah; I have led thee in ma'aglei yosher (right paths).

בְּֽ֭לֶכְתְּךָ SDBH When you walk לֹא־ SDBH will not יֵצַ֣ר SDBH be impeded צַעֲדֶ֑ךָ SDBH your steps וְאִם־ SDBH when תָּ֝ר֗וּץ SDBH you run לֹ֣א SDBH you will not תִכָּשֵֽׁל׃ SDBH stumble

When thou goest, thy steps shall not be hindered; and when thou runnest, lo tikashel (thou shalt not stumble).

הַחֲזֵ֣ק SDBH Hold on בַּמּוּסָ֣ר SDBH to instruction אַל־ do not תֶּ֑רֶף SDBH let go נִ֝צְּרֶ֗הָ SDBH Guard it כִּי־ for הִ֥יא SDBH it חַיֶּֽיךָ׃ SDBH is your life

Take firm hold of musar; let her not go; guard her; for she is thy chayyim.

14

בְּאֹ֣רַח SDBH on the path רְ֭שָׁעִים SDBH of the wicked אַל־ Do not תָּבֹ֑א SDBH set foot וְאַל־ [or] תְּ֝אַשֵּׁ֗ר SDBH walk בְּדֶ֣רֶךְ SDBH in the way רָעִֽים׃ SDBH of evildoers

Enter not into the orach resha'im, and go not on the derech ra'im (road of the wicked).

15

פְּרָעֵ֥הוּ SDBH Avoid it אַל־ do not תַּעֲבָר־ SDBH travel בּ֑וֹ on it שְׂטֵ֖ה SDBH Turn מֵעָלָ֣יו from it וַעֲבֽוֹר׃ SDBH and pass on by

Avoid it, travel al (not) on it, turn from it, and pass on.

16

כִּ֤י For לֹ֣א SDBH they cannot יִֽ֭שְׁנוּ SDBH sleep אִם־ SDBH unless לֹ֣א SDBH . . . יָרֵ֑עוּ SDBH they do evil וְֽנִגְזְלָ֥ה SDBH they are deprived שְׁ֝נָתָ֗ם SDBH of slumber אִם־ SDBH until לֹ֥א SDBH . . . יִכְשׁוֹלוּ׃ SDBH they make someone fall

For they sleep not, unless they have done evil; and their sheynah (sleep) is robbed, unless they cause some to fall.

17

כִּ֣י For לָ֭חֲמוּ SDBH they eat לֶ֣חֶם SDBH the bread רֶ֑שַׁע SDBH of wickedness וְיֵ֖ין SDBH the wine חֲמָסִ֣ים SDBH of violence יִשְׁתּֽוּ׃ SDBH and drink

For they eat the lechem of resha, and drink the yayin of chamasim (violences).

18

וְאֹ֣רַח SDBH The path צַ֭דִּיקִים SDBH of the righteous כְּא֣וֹר SDBH is like the first gleam נֹ֑גַהּ SDBH of dawn הוֹלֵ֥ךְ SDBH shining brighter וָ֝א֗וֹר SDBH . . . עַד־ SDBH and brighter until נְכ֥וֹן SDBH midday הַיּֽוֹם׃ SDBH . . .

But the orach tzaddikim (path of the righteous) is as the bright light, that shineth brighter and brighter unto the full day.

19

דֶּ֣רֶךְ SDBH But the way רְ֭שָׁעִים SDBH of the wicked כָּֽאֲפֵלָ֑ה SDBH is like the darkest gloom לֹ֥א SDBH they do not יָ֝דְע֗וּ SDBH know בַּמֶּ֥ה SDBH what יִכָּשֵֽׁלוּ׃פ SDBH makes them stumble

The derech resha'im is as deep darkness; they know not at what they stumble.

20

בְּ֭נִי SDBH My son לִדְבָרַ֣י SDBH to my words הַקְשִׁ֑יבָה SDBH pay attention לַ֝אֲמָרַ֗י SDBH to my sayings הַט־ SDBH incline אָזְנֶֽךָ׃ SDBH your ear

Beni (my son), attend to my words; incline thine ozen unto my sayings.

21

אַל־ Do not יַלִּ֥יזוּ SDBH lose מֵעֵינֶ֑יךָ SDBH sight of them שָׁ֝מְרֵ֗ם SDBH keep them בְּת֣וֹךְ SDBH within לְבָבֶֽךָ׃ SDBH your heart

Let them not depart from thine eyes; be shomer over them within thine lev.

22

כִּֽי־ For חַיִּ֣ים SDBH are life הֵ֭ם SDBH they לְמֹצְאֵיהֶ֑ם SDBH to those who find them וּֽלְכָל־ to the whole בְּשָׂר֥וֹ SDBH body מַרְפֵּֽא׃ SDBH and health

For they are chayyim unto those that find them, and health to all their basar.

23

מִֽכָּל־ with all מִ֭שְׁמָר SDBH diligence נְצֹ֣ר SDBH Guard לִבֶּ֑ךָ SDBH your heart כִּֽי־ for מִ֝מֶּ֗נּוּ from it תּוֹצְא֥וֹת SDBH flow חַיִּֽים׃ SDBH springs of life

Set watch over and guard thy lev with all diligence; for out of it are the totze'ot chayyim (issues, wellsprings of life cf Mk 7:20-23).

24

הָסֵ֣ר SDBH Put מִ֭מְּךָ away עִקְּשׁ֣וּת SDBH deception פֶּ֑ה SDBH from your mouth וּלְז֥וּת SDBH from perverse speech שְׂ֝פָתַ֗יִם SDBH your lips הַרְחֵ֥ק SDBH keep מִמֶּֽךָּ׃ . . .

Put away from thee a deceitful peh (mouth), and perverse sfatayim (lips) put far from thee.

25

עֵ֭ינֶיךָ SDBH Let your eyes לְנֹ֣כַח SDBH forward יַבִּ֑יטוּ SDBH look וְ֝עַפְעַפֶּ֗יךָ SDBH fix your gaze יַיְשִׁ֥רוּ SDBH straight נֶגְדֶּֽךָ׃ ahead

Let thine eynayim look straight forward, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee.

26

פַּ֭לֵּס SDBH Make a level מַעְגַּ֣ל SDBH path רַגְלֶ֑ךָ SDBH for your feet וְֽכָל־ and all דְּרָכֶ֥יךָ SDBH your ways יִכֹּֽנוּ׃ SDBH will be sure

Ponder the ma'agal (path) of thy raglayim, and let all thy drakhim be firm.

27

אַֽל־ Do not תֵּט־ SDBH swerve יָמִ֥ין SDBH to the right וּשְׂמֹ֑אול SDBH or to the left הָסֵ֖ר SDBH turn רַגְלְךָ֣ SDBH your feet {away} מֵרָֽע׃ SDBH from evil

Turn not to the right hand nor to the left; remove thy regel from rah [T.N. EVERYONE IN LIFE HAS TWO PATHS TO CHOOSE FROM JUST AS MOSHIACH TZIDKEINU SPOKE OF TWO GATES, A WIDE ONE CROWDED WITH TRAFFIC AND LEADING TO DESTRUCTION, AND ANOTHER ONE FOUND BY FEW BUT LEADING TO LIFE AND REDEMPTION--MT 7:13-14].
