מִשְׁלֵ֗י SDBH The proverbs שְׁלֹ֫מֹ֥ה פ SDBH of Solomon בֵּ֣ן SDBH son חָ֭כָם SDBH A wise יְשַׂמַּח־ SDBH brings joy אָ֑ב SDBH to his father וּבֵ֥ן SDBH son כְּ֝סִ֗יל SDBH but a foolish תּוּגַ֥ת SDBH grief אִמּֽוֹ׃ SDBH to his mother

The mishle (proverbs) of Sh'lomo. A ben chacham maketh glad an av, but a ben kesil is the grief of his em.

לֹא־ SDBH nothing י֭וֹעִילוּ SDBH profit אוֹצְר֣וֹת SDBH treasures רֶ֑שַׁע SDBH Ill-gotten וּ֝צְדָקָ֗ה SDBH but righteousness תַּצִּ֥יל SDBH brings deliverance מִמָּֽוֶת׃ SDBH from death

Otzarot resha profit nothing, but tzedakah (righteousness) saveth from mavet.

לֹֽא־ SDBH does not יַרְעִ֣יב SDBH go hungry יְ֭הוָה SDBH Hashem/Adonoi נֶ֣פֶשׁ SDBH . . . צַדִּ֑יק SDBH let the righteous וְהַוַּ֖ת SDBH the craving רְשָׁעִ֣ים SDBH of the wicked יֶהְדֹּֽף׃ SDBH but He denies

Hashem will not suffer the nefesh of the tzaddik to famish, but He thwarteth the craving of the resha'im.

רָ֗אשׁ SDBH one poor עֹשֶׂ֥ה SDBH make כַף־ SDBH hands רְמִיָּ֑ה SDBH Idle וְיַ֖ד SDBH hands חָרוּצִ֣ים SDBH but diligent תַּעֲשִֽׁיר׃ SDBH bring wealth

He becometh poor that dealeth with a negligent palm, but the yad of the diligent maketh wealth.

אֹגֵ֣ר SDBH He who gathers בַּ֭קַּיִץ SDBH in summer בֵּ֣ן SDBH son מַשְׂכִּ֑יל SDBH [is] a wise נִרְדָּ֥ם SDBH [but] he who sleeps בַּ֝קָּצִ֗יר SDBH during harvest בֵּ֣ן SDBH son מֵבִֽישׁ׃ SDBH is a disgraceful

He that gathereth in kayitz is a ben maskil (son of wisdom), but he that sleepeth in katzir (harvest) is a ben that causeth shame.

בְּ֭רָכוֹת SDBH Blessings לְרֹ֣אשׁ SDBH are on the head צַדִּ֑יק SDBH of the righteous וּפִ֥י SDBH but the mouth רְ֝שָׁעִ֗ים SDBH of the wicked יְכַסֶּ֥ה SDBH conceals חָמָֽס׃ SDBH violence

Brakhot are upon the head of the tzaddik, but chamas covereth the peh (mouth) of the resha'im.

זֵ֣כֶר SDBH The memory צַ֭דִּיק SDBH of the righteous לִבְרָכָ֑ה SDBH is a blessing וְשֵׁ֖ם SDBH but the name רְשָׁעִ֣ים SDBH of the wicked יִרְקָֽב׃ SDBH will rot

The memory of the tzaddik is as bracha, but the shem resha'im shall rot.

חֲכַם־ SDBH A wise לֵ֭ב SDBH heart יִקַּ֣ח SDBH will receive מִצְוֺ֑ת SDBH commandments וֶאֱוִ֥יל SDBH but foolish שְׂ֝פָתַ֗יִם SDBH lips יִלָּבֵֽט׃ SDBH will come to ruin

The chacham lev will receive mitzvot, but one with foolish sfatayim (lips) shall be thrust down.

הוֹלֵ֣ךְ SDBH He who walks בַּ֭תֹּם SDBH in integrity יֵ֣לֶךְ SDBH walks בֶּ֑טַח SDBH securely וּמְעַקֵּ֥שׁ SDBH but he who perverts דְּ֝רָכָ֗יו SDBH his ways יִוָּדֵֽעַ׃ SDBH will be found out

He that walketh uprightly walketh securely, but he that perverteth his drakhim shall be known.

קֹ֣רֵֽץ SDBH He who winks עַ֭יִן SDBH the eye יִתֵּ֣ן causes עַצָּ֑בֶת SDBH grief וֶאֱוִ֥יל SDBH and foolish שְׂ֝פָתַ֗יִם SDBH lips יִלָּבֵֽט׃ SDBH will come to ruin

He that winketh with the ayin causeth trouble, but one with foolish sfatayim shall come to ruin.

מְק֣וֹר SDBH is a fountain חַ֭יִּים SDBH of life פִּ֣י SDBH The mouth צַדִּ֑יק SDBH of the righteous וּפִ֥י SDBH but the mouth רְ֝שָׁעִ֗ים SDBH of the wicked יְכַסֶּ֥ה SDBH conceals חָמָֽס׃ SDBH violence

The peh (mouth) of a tzaddik is a Makor Chayyim, but chamas covereth the peh (mouth) of the resha'im.

שִׂ֭נְאָה SDBH Hatred תְּעוֹרֵ֣ר SDBH stirs up מְדָנִ֑ים SDBH dissension וְעַ֥ל . . . כָּל־ all פְּ֝שָׁעִ֗ים SDBH transgressions תְּכַסֶּ֥ה SDBH covers אַהֲבָֽה׃ SDBH but love

Sin'ah (hatred) stirreth up medanim (dissensions), but ahavah covereth all peysha'im.

בְּשִׂפְתֵ֣י SDBH on the lips נָ֭בוֹן SDBH of the discerning תִּמָּצֵ֣א SDBH is found חָכְמָ֑ה SDBH Wisdom וְ֝שֵׁ֗בֶט SDBH but a rod לְגֵ֣ו SDBH is for the back חֲסַר־ SDBH of him who lacks לֵֽב׃ SDBH judgment

In the sfatayim (lips) of him that hath understanding chochmah is found, but a shevet (rod) is for the back of him that is devoid of lev [understanding].

חֲכָמִ֥ים SDBH The wise יִצְפְּנוּ־ SDBH store up דָ֑עַת SDBH knowledge וּפִֽי־ SDBH but the mouth אֱ֝וִיל SDBH of the fool מְחִתָּ֥ה SDBH destruction קְרֹבָֽה׃ SDBH invites

Chachamim treasure up da'as (knowledge); but the peh (mouth) of the foolish is near destruction.

15

ה֣וֹן SDBH The wealth עָ֭שִׁיר SDBH of the rich man קִרְיַ֣ת SDBH city עֻזּ֑וֹ SDBH is his fortified מְחִתַּ֖ת SDBH is the ruin דַּלִּ֣ים SDBH of the poor רֵישָֽׁם׃ SDBH but poverty

The oisher's wealth is his strong city; the destruction of the poor ones is their poverty.

פְּעֻלַּ֣ת SDBH The labor צַדִּ֣יק SDBH of the righteous לְחַיִּ֑ים SDBH leads to life תְּבוּאַ֖ת SDBH [but] the gain רָשָׁ֣ע SDBH of the wicked לְחַטָּֽאת׃ SDBH [brings] punishment

The wage of the tzaddik leadeth to Chayyim; the wage of the rashah is for chattat [Ro 6:23].

17

אֹ֣רַח SDBH is on the path לְ֭חַיִּים SDBH to life שׁוֹמֵ֣ר SDBH Whoever heeds מוּסָ֑ר SDBH instruction וְעוֹזֵ֖ב SDBH but he who ignores תּוֹכַ֣חַת SDBH reproof מַתְעֶֽה׃ SDBH goes astray

He is in the orach (path) of Chayyim that is shomer over musar, but he that abandoneth tokhakhat (reproof) goes astray.

מְכַסֶּ֣ה SDBH The one who conceals שִׂ֭נְאָה SDBH hatred שִׂפְתֵי־ SDBH lips שָׁ֑קֶר SDBH has lying וּמוֹצִ֥א SDBH and whoever spreads דִ֝בָּ֗ה SDBH slander ה֣וּא SDBH . . . כְסִֽיל׃ SDBH is a fool

He that hideth sin'ah with sfatayim sheker, and he that uttereth a slander, is a kesil (fool).

19

בְּרֹ֣ב are many דְּ֭בָרִים SDBH When words לֹ֣א SDBH is unavoidable יֶחְדַּל־ SDBH . . . פָּ֑שַׁע SDBH sin וְחֹשֵׂ֖ךְ SDBH but he who restrains שְׂפָתָ֣יו SDBH his lips מַשְׂכִּֽיל׃ SDBH is wise

In the multitude of devarim there wanteth not sin, but he that restraineth his sfatayim (lips) is maskil (wise).

20

כֶּ֣סֶף SDBH silver נִ֭בְחָר SDBH [is] choice לְשׁ֣וֹן SDBH The tongue צַדִּ֑יק SDBH of the righteous לֵ֖ב SDBH [but] the heart רְשָׁעִ֣ים SDBH of the wicked כִּמְעָֽט׃ SDBH [has] little worth

The lashon of the tzaddik is as choice kesef; the lev of the resha'im is of little worth.

21

שִׂפְתֵ֣י SDBH The lips צַ֭דִּיק SDBH of the righteous יִרְע֣וּ SDBH feed רַבִּ֑ים SDBH many וֶֽ֝אֱוִילִ֗ים SDBH but fools בַּחֲסַר־ SDBH for lack לֵ֥ב SDBH of judgment יָמֽוּתוּ׃ SDBH die

The sfatayim (lips) of the tzaddik feed rabbim (many), but fools die for lack of lev [of chochmah].

22

בִּרְכַּ֣ת SDBH The blessing יְ֭הוָה SDBH Hashem/Adonoi הִ֣יא SDBH . . . תַעֲשִׁ֑יר SDBH enriches וְלֹֽא־ SDBH no יוֹסִ֖ף SDBH and He adds עֶ֣צֶב SDBH sorrow עִמָּֽהּ׃ to it

The Birkat Hashem, it maketh wealthy, and He addeth no sorrow with it.

23

כִּשְׂח֣וֹק SDBH delights לִ֭כְסִיל SDBH The fool עֲשׂ֣וֹת SDBH conduct זִמָּ֑ה SDBH in shameful וְ֝חָכְמָ֗ה SDBH has wisdom לְאִ֣ישׁ SDBH but a man תְּבוּנָֽה׃ SDBH of understanding

It is as sport to a kesil to do zimmah (evil design), but an ish tevunah (man of understanding) hath chochmah.

24

מְגוֹרַ֣ת SDBH dreads רָ֭שָׁע SDBH What the wicked [man] הִ֣יא SDBH . . . תְבוֹאֶ֑נּוּ SDBH will overtake him וְתַאֲוַ֖ת SDBH but the desire צַדִּיקִ֣ים SDBH of the righteous יִתֵּֽן׃ will be granted

What the rashah dreads, it shall come upon him, but the ta'avat tzaddikim shall be granted.

25

כַּעֲב֣וֹר SDBH passes ס֭וּפָה SDBH When the whirlwind וְאֵ֣ין SDBH are no more רָשָׁ֑ע SDBH the wicked וְ֝צַדִּ֗יק SDBH but the righteous יְס֣וֹד SDBH are secure עוֹלָֽם׃ SDBH forever

As the whirlwind passeth, so is the rashah no more, but the tzaddik is a yesod olam (an everlasting foundation).

26

כַּחֹ֤מֶץ׀ SDBH Like vinegar לַשִּׁנַּ֗יִם SDBH to the teeth וְכֶעָשָׁ֥ן SDBH and smoke לָעֵינָ֑יִם SDBH to the eyes כֵּ֥ן SDBH so הֶ֝עָצֵ֗ל SDBH [is] the slacker לְשֹׁלְחָֽיו׃ SDBH to those who send him

As chometz to the teeth, and as smoke to the eyes, so is the atzel (sluggard, lazy one) to them that send him.

27

יִרְאַ֣ת SDBH The fear יְ֭הוָה SDBH Hashem/Adonoi תּוֹסִ֣יף SDBH prolongs יָמִ֑ים SDBH life וּשְׁנ֖וֹת SDBH but the years רְשָׁעִ֣ים SDBH of the wicked תִּקְצֹֽרְנָה׃ SDBH will be cut short

The Yirat Hashem prolongeth yamim; but the shanot of the resha'im shall be cut short.

28

תּוֹחֶ֣לֶת SDBH The hope צַדִּיקִ֣ים SDBH of the righteous שִׂמְחָ֑ה SDBH is joy וְתִקְוַ֖ת SDBH but the expectations רְשָׁעִ֣ים SDBH of the wicked תֹּאבֵֽד׃ SDBH will perish

The prospect of the tzaddikim shall be simchah, but the tikveh of the resha'im shall perish.

29

מָע֣וֹז SDBH is a refuge לַ֭תֹּם SDBH to the upright דֶּ֣רֶךְ SDBH The way יְהוָ֑ה SDBH Hashem/Adonoi וּ֝מְחִתָּ֗ה SDBH but destruction לְפֹ֣עֲלֵי SDBH [awaits] those who do אָֽוֶן׃ SDBH evil

The Derech Hashem is maoz to the blameless, but destruction shall be to the workers of iniquity.

30

צַדִּ֣יק SDBH The righteous לְעוֹלָ֣ם SDBH will never בַּל־ SDBH . . . יִמּ֑וֹט SDBH be shaken וּ֝רְשָׁעִ֗ים SDBH but the wicked לֹ֣א SDBH will not יִשְׁכְּנוּ־ SDBH inhabit אָֽרֶץ׃ SDBH the land

The tzaddik shall never be removed, but the resha'im shall not inhabit Eretz.

31

פִּֽי־ SDBH The mouth צַ֭דִּיק SDBH of the righteous יָנ֣וּב SDBH brings forth חָכְמָ֑ה SDBH wisdom וּלְשׁ֥וֹן SDBH tongue תַּ֝הְפֻּכ֗וֹת SDBH but a perverse תִּכָּרֵֽת׃ SDBH will be cut out

The peh (mouth) of the tzaddik bringeth forth chochmah, but the lashon tahpukhot (tongue of perversion, distortion) shall be cut off.

32

שִׂפְתֵ֣י SDBH The lips צַ֭דִּיק SDBH of the righteous יֵדְע֣וּן SDBH know רָצ֑וֹן SDBH what is fitting וּפִ֥י SDBH but the mouth רְ֝שָׁעִ֗ים SDBH of the wicked תַּהְפֻּכֽוֹת׃ SDBH is perverse

The sfatayim (lips) of the tzaddik know what is ratzon (acceptable), but the peh (mouth) of the resha'im speaketh tahpukhot (perversity).
