How doth HaIr (the city, Yerushalayim) sit solitary, that was full of people! How is she become like an almanah (widow)! She that was great among the Goyim, and sarah (princess) among the provinces, how is she become a forced laborer!

בָּכ֨וֹ SDBH She weeps aloud תִבְכֶּ֜ה SDBH . . . בַּלַּ֗יְלָה SDBH in the night וְדִמְעָתָהּ֙ SDBH with tears עַ֣ל upon לֶֽחֱיָ֔הּ SDBH her cheeks אֵֽין־ SDBH there is no one לָ֥הּ מְנַחֵ֖ם SDBH to comfort [her] מִכָּל־ Among all אֹהֲבֶ֑יהָ SDBH her lovers כָּל־ All רֵעֶ֙יהָ֙ SDBH her friends בָּ֣גְדוּ SDBH have betrayed בָ֔הּ her הָ֥יוּ they have become לָ֖הּ her לְאֹיְבִֽים׃ס SDBH enemies
She weepeth bitterly in the lailah (night), and her tears are on her cheeks; among all her lovers she hath no Menachem (comforter); all her friends have dealt treacherously with her; they have become her enemies.
Yehudah is gone into the Golus (Exile) under affliction, and under great avodah (servitude); she dwelleth among the Goyim; she findeth no manoach (rest); all her rodefim (persecutors) overtook her in dire straits.

דַּרְכֵ֨י SDBH The roads צִיּ֜וֹן SDBH to Zion אֲבֵל֗וֹת SDBH mourn מִבְּלִי֙ SDBH because no one בָּאֵ֣י SDBH comes מוֹעֵ֔ד SDBH to her appointed feasts כָּל־ All שְׁעָרֶ֙יהָ֙ SDBH her gates שֽׁוֹמֵמִ֔ין SDBH are deserted כֹּהֲנֶ֖יהָ SDBH her priests נֶאֱנָחִ֑ים SDBH groan בְּתוּלֹתֶ֥יהָ SDBH her maidens נּוּג֖וֹת SDBH grieve וְהִ֥יא SDBH and she herself מַר־ SDBH is bitter with anguish לָֽהּ׃ס
The darkhei Tziyon (approaches to Tziyon) do mourn, because none come to mo'ed (set feasts); all her she'arim (gates) are desolate; her kohanim sigh, her betulot (virgins) are afflicted, and she is in bitterness.

הָי֨וּ have become צָרֶ֤יהָ SDBH Her foes לְרֹאשׁ֙ SDBH her masters אֹיְבֶ֣יהָ SDBH her enemies שָׁל֔וּ SDBH are at ease כִּֽי־ For יְהוָ֥ה SDBH Hashem/Adonoi הוֹגָ֖הּ SDBH has brought her grief עַ֣ל because of רֹב־ her many פְּשָׁעֶ֑יהָ SDBH transgressions עוֹלָלֶ֛יהָ SDBH Her children הָלְכ֥וּ SDBH have gone away שְׁבִ֖י SDBH as captives לִפְנֵי־ before צָֽר׃ס SDBH the enemy
Her adversaries are now the rosh (supreme, master); her enemies prosper; for Hashem hath afflicted her because of the multitude of her peysha'im (transgressions); her olalim (little children) are gone into captivity before the enemy.
And from Bat Tziyon all her beauty has departed; her sarim (princes) are become like deer that find no pasture, and they are gone without strength before the rodef (persecutor, pursuer).
In the yamim (days) of her affliction and of her persecutions, Yerushalayim remembers all her pleasant things that she had miymei kedem (in the days of old), when her people fell into the hand of the enemy, and there was no ozer (helper) for her; the adversaries saw her, and did mock at her downfall.
Yerushalayim hath grievously sinned; therefore she is niddah (unclean, Jewish woman's untouchability during menstruation; Vayikra 15:19); all that honored her despise her, because they have seen her erom (nakedness); yea, she sigheth, and turneth away for shame.

טֻמְאָתָ֣הּ SDBH Her uncleanness בְּשׁוּלֶ֗יהָ SDBH stains her skirts לֹ֤א SDBH she did not זָֽכְרָה֙ SDBH consider אַחֲרִיתָ֔הּ SDBH her end וַתֵּ֣רֶד SDBH Her downfall פְּלָאִ֔ים SDBH was astounding אֵ֥ין SDBH there was no one מְנַחֵ֖ם SDBH to comfort לָ֑הּ her רְאֵ֤ה SDBH Look יְהוָה֙ SDBH Hashem/Adonoi אֶת־ SDBH - עָנְיִ֔י SDBH on my affliction כִּ֥י for הִגְדִּ֖יל SDBH has triumphed אוֹיֵֽב׃ס SDBH the enemy
Her filthiness is in her skirts; she remembereth not her latter end; therefore she sank appallingly; she had no Menachem (comforter). O Hashem, behold my affliction; for the enemy hath triumphed.
10
יָדוֹ֙ SDBH has seized פָּ֣רַשׂ SDBH . . . צָ֔ר SDBH The adversary עַ֖ל . . . כָּל־ all מַחֲמַדֶּ֑יהָ SDBH her treasures כִּֽי־ For רָאֲתָ֤ה SDBH she has seen גוֹיִם֙ SDBH the nations בָּ֣אוּ SDBH enter מִקְדָּשָׁ֔הּ SDBH her sanctuary אֲשֶׁ֣ר SDBH those צִוִּ֔יתָה SDBH You had forbidden לֹא־ SDBH . . . יָבֹ֥אוּ SDBH to enter בַקָּהָ֖ל SDBH Your assembly לָֽךְ׃ס
The adversary hath spread out his hand upon all her precious things; for she hath seen how the Goyim entered into her [Beis] Hamikdash, whom Thou didst command that they should not enter into Thy Kahal (congregation, community).
All her people sigh, they seek lechem; they have given their precious things for bread to revive the nefesh; see, O Hashem, and consider that I am become despised.

ל֣וֹא SDBH Is this nothing אֲלֵיכֶם֮ to you כָּל־ all עֹ֣בְרֵי SDBH you who pass by דֶרֶךְ֒ SDBH . . . הַבִּ֣יטוּ SDBH Look around וּרְא֗וּ SDBH and see אִם־ SDBH . . . יֵ֤שׁ Is there מַכְאוֹב֙ SDBH any sorrow כְּמַכְאֹבִ֔י SDBH like mine אֲשֶׁ֥ר SDBH which עוֹלַ֖ל SDBH was inflicted לִ֑י on me אֲשֶׁר֙ SDBH which הוֹגָ֣ה SDBH made me suffer יְהוָ֔ה SDBH Hashem/Adonoi בְּי֖וֹם SDBH on the day חֲר֥וֹן SDBH of His fierce אַפּֽוֹ׃ס SDBH anger
Is it nothing to you, all ye that pass by? Consider, and see if there be any sorrow like my sorrow, which is done unto me, wherewith Hashem hath afflicted me in the Yom Charon Af (day of His fierce anger).
From above hath He sent eish into my atzamot (bones), and it prevaileth against them; He hath spread a net for my feet, He hath turned me back; He hath made me desolate and kol hayom (ever) languishing.

נִשְׂקַד֩ SDBH are bound into עֹ֨ל SDBH a yoke פְּשָׁעַ֜י SDBH My transgressions בְּיָד֗וֹ SDBH by His hand יִשְׂתָּֽרְג֛וּ SDBH knit together עָל֥וּ SDBH they are draped עַל־ over צַוָּארִ֖י SDBH my neck הִכְשִׁ֣יל SDBH has broken כֹּחִ֑י SDBH my strength נְתָנַ֣נִי He has delivered me אֲדֹנָ֔י SDBH and the Lord בִּידֵ֖י SDBH into the hands לֹא־ SDBH of those I cannot אוּכַ֥ל SDBH . . . קֽוּם׃ס SDBH withstand
The yoke of my peysha'im hath been fastened by His hand; they [i.e., my sins] intertwine themselves and set upon my tzavar (neck); He hath made my strength to fall; Hashem hath delivered me into their hands, from whom I am not able to rise up.
15
סִלָּ֨ה SDBH has rejected כָל־ all אַבִּירַ֤י׀ SDBH the mighty men אֲדֹנָי֙ SDBH The Lord בְּקִרְבִּ֔י SDBH in my midst קָרָ֥א SDBH He has summoned עָלַ֛י against me מוֹעֵ֖ד SDBH an army לִשְׁבֹּ֣ר SDBH to crush בַּחוּרָ֑י SDBH my young warriors גַּ֚ת SDBH Like grapes in a winepress דָּרַ֣ךְ SDBH has trampled אֲדֹנָ֔י SDBH the Lord לִבְתוּלַ֖ת SDBH the Virgin בַּת־ SDBH Daughter יְהוּדָֽה׃ס SDBH of Judah
Hashem hath taken away all my strong ones in my midst; He hath proclaimed a mo'ed (set time) against me to crush my young men; Hashem hath trodden the winepress for the Betulat Bat Yehudah.
For these things I weep; mine eye, mine eye runneth down with mayim, because the Menachem (comforter) that should refresh my nefesh is far from me; my children are desolate, because the enemy hath prevailed.
17
פֵּֽרְשָׂ֨ה SDBH stretches out צִיּ֜וֹן SDBH Zion בְּיָדֶ֗יהָ SDBH her hands אֵ֤ין SDBH but there is no מְנַחֵם֙ SDBH one to comfort לָ֔הּ her צִוָּ֧ה SDBH has decreed יְהוָ֛ה SDBH Hashem/Adonoi לְיַעֲקֹ֖ב SDBH against Jacob סְבִיבָ֣יו that his neighbors צָרָ֑יו SDBH become his foes הָיְתָ֧ה has become יְרוּשָׁלִַ֛ם SDBH Jerusalem לְנִדָּ֖ה SDBH an unclean thing בֵּינֵיהֶֽם׃ס SDBH among them
Tziyon stretcheth forth her hands, yet there is no Menachem (comforter) for her; Hashem hath commanded concerning Ya'akov, that his adversaries should be round about him; Yerushalayim is as a niddah (menstruous woman) among them.

צַדִּ֥יק SDBH is righteous ה֛וּא SDBH . . . יְהוָ֖ה SDBH Hashem/Adonoi כִּ֣י yet פִ֣יהוּ SDBH against His command מָרִ֑יתִי SDBH I rebelled שִׁמְעוּ־ SDBH Listen נָ֣א . . . כָל־ all you people עַמִּים SDBH . . . וּרְאוּ֙ SDBH look upon מַכְאֹבִ֔י SDBH my suffering בְּתוּלֹתַ֥י SDBH and maidens וּבַחוּרַ֖י SDBH My young men הָלְכ֥וּ SDBH have gone בַשֶּֽׁבִי׃ס SDBH into captivity
Tzaddik is Hashem; for I have rebelled against His mouth; hear, I pray you, kol amim (all people), and behold my sorrow; my betulot and my bochurim are gone into captivity.
I called for my lovers, but they have deceived me; my kohanim and my zekenim gave up the ghost (i.e., expired) in HaIr (the City), while they sought okhel (food) to revive their nefashot.

רְאֵ֨ה SDBH See יְהוָ֤ה SDBH Hashem/Adonoi כִּֽי־ how צַר־ SDBH distressed לִי֙ I [am] מֵעַ֣י SDBH within חֳמַרְמָ֔רוּ SDBH I am churning נֶהְפַּ֤ךְ SDBH is pounding לִבִּי֙ SDBH my heart בְּקִרְבִּ֔י SDBH within me כִּ֥י for מָר֖וֹ SDBH I have been most rebellious מָרִ֑יתִי SDBH . . . מִח֥וּץ SDBH Outside שִׁכְּלָה־ SDBH bereaves חֶ֖רֶב SDBH the sword בַּבַּ֥יִת SDBH inside כַּמָּֽוֶת׃ס SDBH there is death
Consider, O Hashem how I am in distress; my bowels are troubled; mine lev is turned within me; for I have grievously rebelled; without (i.e.,outside), the cherev (sword) bereaveth, within (i.e., babayit, at home) it is like mavet (death).
21
שָׁמְע֞וּ SDBH People have heard כִּ֧י נֶאֱנָחָ֣ה SDBH groaning אָ֗נִי SDBH my אֵ֤ין SDBH but there is no מְנַחֵם֙ SDBH one to comfort לִ֔י me כָּל־ All אֹ֨יְבַ֜י SDBH my enemies שָׁמְע֤וּ SDBH have heard רָֽעָתִי֙ SDBH of my trouble שָׂ֔שׂוּ SDBH they are glad כִּ֥י that אַתָּ֖ה SDBH You עָשִׂ֑יתָ SDBH have caused it הֵבֵ֥אתָ SDBH May You bring יוֹם־ SDBH the day קָרָ֖אתָ SDBH You have announced וְיִֽהְי֥וּ so that they may become כָמֽוֹנִי׃ס SDBH like me
They have heard that I sigh; there is no Menachem (comforter); all mine enemies have heard of my trouble; they are glad that Thou hast done it; Thou bringest the Yom Karata (the day that Thou has proclaimed), that they (all the peoples; see 1:18) may be like me.
22
תָּבֹ֨א SDBH come כָל־ Let all רָעָתָ֤ם SDBH their wickedness לְפָנֶ֙יךָ֙ before You וְעוֹלֵ֣ל SDBH and deal לָ֔מוֹ with them כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר SDBH as עוֹלַ֛לְתָּ SDBH You have dealt לִ֖י with me עַ֣ל because of כָּל־ all פְּשָׁעָ֑י SDBH my transgressions כִּֽי־ For רַבּ֥וֹת SDBH are many אַנְחֹתַ֖י SDBH my groans וְלִבִּ֥י SDBH and my heart דַוָּֽי׃פ SDBH is faint
Let all their wickedness come before Thee; and do unto them, as Thou hast done unto me for all my peysha'im; for my sighs are many, and my lev is faint.
