Iyov 9 — Hebrew–OJB Interlinear

וַיַּ֥עַן SDBH answered אִיּ֗וֹב SDBH Then Job וַיֹּאמַֽר׃ SDBH . . .

Then Iyov answered and said,

2

אָ֭מְנָם SDBH Yes יָדַ֣עְתִּי SDBH I know כִי־ that כֵ֑ן SDBH [it is] so וּמַה־ SDBH but how יִּצְדַּ֖ק SDBH be righteous אֱנ֣וֹשׁ SDBH can a mortal עִם־ before אֵֽל׃ SDBH G-d

I know it is indeed thus, but how should yitzdak Enosh im El (Man be in the right, justified, before G-d)?

אִם־ SDBH If יַ֭חְפֹּץ SDBH one wished לָרִ֣יב SDBH to contend עִמּ֑וֹ with [G-d] לֹֽא־ SDBH he could not יַ֝עֲנֶ֗נּוּ SDBH answer Him אַחַ֥ת SDBH one [time] מִנִּי־ out of אָֽלֶף׃ SDBH a thousand

If he will contend with Him, once of a thousand can Man not answer G-d back.

חֲכַ֣ם SDBH [G-d is] wise לֵ֭בָב SDBH in heart וְאַמִּ֣יץ SDBH and mighty כֹּ֑חַ SDBH in strength מִֽי־ SDBH Who הִקְשָׁ֥ה SDBH has resisted אֵ֝לָ֗יו Him וַיִּשְׁלָֽם׃ SDBH and prospered

G-d is chochom in lev, and mighty in ko'ach; who hath hardened himself to defy Him and remained unhurt?

הַמַּעְתִּ֣יק SDBH He moves הָ֭רִים SDBH mountains וְלֹ֣א SDBH without יָדָ֑עוּ SDBH their knowledge אֲשֶׁ֖ר SDBH [and] הֲפָכָ֣ם SDBH overturns them בְּאַפּֽוֹ׃ SDBH in His anger

Which removeth the harim (mountains), and they know not; which overturneth them in His anger;

הַמַּרְגִּ֣יז SDBH He shakes אֶ֭רֶץ SDBH the earth מִמְּקוֹמָ֑הּ SDBH from its place וְ֝עַמּוּדֶ֗יהָ SDBH so that its foundations יִתְפַלָּצֽוּן׃ SDBH tremble

Which shaketh eretz out of its place, and the ammudim thereof tremble;

הָאֹמֵ֣ר SDBH He commands לַ֭חֶרֶס SDBH the sun וְלֹ֣א SDBH not יִזְרָ֑ח SDBH to shine וּבְעַ֖ד SDBH He seals off כּוֹכָבִ֣ים SDBH the stars יַחְתֹּֽם׃ SDBH . . .

Which commandeth the cheres (sun), and it riseth not; and sealeth up the kokhavim;

נֹטֶ֣ה SDBH stretches out שָׁמַ֣יִם SDBH the heavens לְבַדּ֑וֹ SDBH He alone וְ֝דוֹרֵ֗ךְ SDBH and treads עַל־ on בָּ֥מֳתֵי SDBH the waves יָֽם׃ SDBH of the sea

Which spreadeth out Shomayim by Himself alone, and treadeth upon the waves of the yam;

עֹֽשֶׂה־ SDBH He is the Maker עָ֭שׁ SDBH of the Bear כְּסִ֥יל SDBH [and] Orion וְכִימָ֗ה SDBH of the Pleiades וְחַדְרֵ֥י SDBH and the constellations תֵמָֽן׃ SDBH of the south

Which maketh the Bear, Orion, and the Pleiades, and the chambers of the constellations on the south side of the heavens;

עֹשֶׂ֣ה SDBH He does גְ֭דֹלוֹת SDBH great things עַד־ SDBH beyond אֵ֣ין SDBH . . . חֵ֑קֶר SDBH searching out וְנִפְלָא֗וֹת SDBH and wonders עַד־ SDBH . . . אֵ֥ין SDBH without מִסְפָּֽר׃ SDBH number

Which doeth gedolot past finding out; yea, and nifla'ot (wonders) without number.

11

הֵ֤ן Were He יַעֲבֹ֣ר SDBH to pass עָ֭לַי by me וְלֹ֣א SDBH I would not אֶרְאֶ֑ה SDBH see Him וְ֝יַחֲלֹ֗ף SDBH were He to move וְֽלֹא־ SDBH I would not אָבִ֥ין SDBH recognize לֽוֹ׃ Him

Hen (lo), He passeth by me, and I see Him not; He goeth on also, but I perceive Him not.

הֵ֣ן If יַ֭חְתֹּף SDBH He takes away מִ֣י SDBH who יְשִׁיבֶ֑נּוּ SDBH can stop Him מִֽי־ SDBH Who יֹאמַ֥ר SDBH dares to ask אֵ֝לָ֗יו Him מַֽה־ SDBH What תַּעֲשֶֽׂה׃ SDBH are You doing

Hinei, He taketh away, who can stop Him? Who will say unto Him, Mah ta'aseh (what are You doing)?

אֱ֭לוֹהַּ SDBH G-d לֹא־ SDBH does not יָשִׁ֣יב SDBH restrain אַפּ֑וֹ SDBH His anger תַּחַתוֹ SDBH beneath Him שָׁ֝חֲח֗וּ SDBH cower עֹ֣זְרֵי SDBH the helpers רָֽהַב׃ SDBH of Rahab

If Eloah restraineth not His anger, the helpers of Rahab must bow themselves under Him.

14

אַ֭ף SDBH How כִּֽי־ then אָנֹכִ֣י SDBH can I אֶֽעֱנֶ֑נּוּ SDBH answer Him אֶבְחֲרָ֖ה SDBH or choose דְבָרַ֣י SDBH my arguments עִמּֽוֹ׃ against Him

How much less shall I dispute with Him, and choose my dvarim with Him?

15

אֲשֶׁ֣ר SDBH For אִם־ SDBH even if צָ֭דַקְתִּי SDBH I were right לֹ֣א SDBH I could not אֶעֱנֶ֑ה SDBH answer לִ֝מְשֹׁפְטִ֗י SDBH I could only beg my Judge אֶתְחַנָּֽן׃ SDBH for mercy

Whom, though I were tzaddik (righteous, innocent, in the right), yet would I not answer, but I would make techinnah (supplication, plea for mercy) for my mishpat (right).

אִם־ SDBH If קָרָ֥אתִי SDBH I summoned Him וַֽיַּעֲנֵ֑נִי SDBH and He answered me לֹֽא־ SDBH I do not אַ֝אֲמִ֗ין SDBH believe כִּֽי־ - יַאֲזִ֥ין SDBH He would listen קוֹלִֽי׃ SDBH to my voice

If I had summoned, and He had responded to me, yet would I not believe that He had paid heed unto my kol (voice);

17

אֲשֶׁר־ SDBH For בִּשְׂעָרָ֥ה SDBH with a tempest יְשׁוּפֵ֑נִי SDBH He would crush me וְהִרְבָּ֖ה and multiply פְצָעַ֣י SDBH my wounds חִנָּֽם׃ SDBH without cause

For He breaketh me in a sa'arah (tempest, storm), and multiplieth my wounds without cause.

18

לֹֽא־ SDBH He does not יִ֭תְּנֵנִי let me הָשֵׁ֣ב SDBH catch רוּחִ֑י SDBH my breath כִּ֥י but יַ֝שְׂבִּעַ֗נִי SDBH overwhelms me מַמְּרֹרִֽים׃ SDBH with bitterness

He will not allow me to take my ruach (breath), but filleth me with bitterness.

19

אִם־ SDBH If לְכֹ֣חַ SDBH it is a matter of strength אַמִּ֣יץ SDBH mighty הִנֵּ֑ה He is indeed וְאִם־ SDBH If לְ֝מִשְׁפָּ֗ט SDBH it is a matter of justice מִ֣י SDBH who יוֹעִידֵֽנִי׃ SDBH can summon Him

If I speak of ko'ach, hinei, He is mighty, and if of mishpat, who can give Him a court summons?

20

אִם־ SDBH Even if אֶ֭צְדָּק SDBH I were righteous פִּ֣י SDBH my mouth יַרְשִׁיעֵ֑נִי SDBH would condemn me תָּֽם־ SDBH were blameless אָ֝֗נִי SDBH if I וַֽיַּעְקְשֵֽׁנִי׃ SDBH it would declare me guilty

If etzdak (I am justified, in the right), mine own mouth would condemn me; if I say, I am blameless, He would prove me perverse.

21

תָּֽם־ SDBH am blameless אָ֭נִי SDBH Though I לֹֽא־ SDBH I have no אֵדַ֥ע SDBH concern נַפְשִׁ֗י SDBH for myself אֶמְאַ֥ס SDBH I despise חַיָּֽי׃ SDBH my own life

Though I were blameless, yet would I not know my nefesh; I would despise my life.

22

אַחַ֗ת SDBH is all the same הִ֥יא SDBH It עַל־ and so כֵּ֥ן SDBH . . . אָמַ֑רְתִּי SDBH I say תָּ֥ם SDBH both the blameless וְ֝רָשָׁ֗ע SDBH and the wicked ה֣וּא SDBH He מְכַלֶּֽה׃ SDBH destroys

This is one thing; therefore I said it, He destroyeth the tam (blameless) and the rasha (wicked).

23

אִם־ SDBH When שׁ֭וֹט SDBH the scourge יָמִ֣ית SDBH death פִּתְאֹ֑ם SDBH brings sudden לְמַסַּ֖ת SDBH the despair נְקִיִּ֣ם SDBH of the innocent יִלְעָֽג׃ SDBH He mocks

If the shot (scourge) slay suddenly, He laugheth at the melting away [in anguish] of the nekiyim (innocent ones, the guiltless ones).

24

אֶ֤רֶץ׀ SDBH The earth נִתְּנָ֬ה is given בְֽיַד־ SDBH into the hand רָשָׁ֗ע SDBH of the wicked פְּנֵֽי־ He blindfolds שֹׁפְטֶ֥יהָ SDBH its judges יְכַסֶּ֑ה SDBH . . . אִם־ SDBH If לֹ֖א SDBH it is not [He] אֵפ֣וֹא SDBH then מִי־ SDBH who הֽוּא׃ SDBH [is] it

Eretz is given into the yad of the resha; He blindfoldeth the faces of the shofetim (judges) thereof; if not, then, who doeth it?

25

וְיָמַ֣י SDBH My days קַ֭לּוּ SDBH are swifter מִנִּי־ than רָ֑ץ SDBH a runner בָּֽ֝רְח֗וּ SDBH they flee לֹא־ SDBH without רָא֥וּ SDBH seeing טוֹבָֽה׃ SDBH good

Now my yamim are swifter than a runner; they flee away, they see no tovah.

26

חָ֭לְפוּ SDBH They sweep by עִם־ like אֳנִיּ֣וֹת SDBH boats אֵבֶ֑ה SDBH of papyrus כְּ֝נֶ֗שֶׁר SDBH like an eagle יָט֥וּשׂ SDBH swooping down עֲלֵי־ on אֹֽכֶל׃ SDBH its prey

They slip by like oniyyot (boats) of reed; as the nesher that swoopeth down on the prey.

27

אִם־ SDBH If אָ֭מְרִי SDBH I were to say אֶשְׁכְּחָ֣ה SDBH I will forget שִׂיחִ֑י SDBH my complaint אֶעֶזְבָ֖ה SDBH [and] change פָנַ֣י my expression וְאַבְלִֽיגָה׃ SDBH and smile

If I say, I will forget my si'akh (complaint), I will leave off my heaviness, and comfort myself,

28

יָגֹ֥רְתִּי SDBH I would still dread כָל־ all עַצְּבֹתָ֑י SDBH my sufferings יָ֝דַ֗עְתִּי SDBH I know כִּי־ that לֹ֥א SDBH You will not תְנַקֵּֽנִי׃ SDBH acquit me

I am afraid of all my sorrows; I have da'as that Thou wilt not hold me innocent.

29

אָנֹכִ֥י SDBH Since I am אֶרְשָׁ֑ע SDBH already found guilty לָמָּה־ SDBH why זֶּ֝֗ה SDBH . . . הֶ֣בֶל SDBH in vain אִיגָֽע׃ SDBH should I labor

If I be wicked, why then labor I in hevel (vain)?

30

אִם־ SDBH If הִתְרָחַ֥צְתִּי SDBH I should wash בְמוֹ myself שָׁ֑לֶג SDBH with snow וַ֝הֲזִכּ֗וֹתִי SDBH and cleanse בְּבֹ֣ר SDBH with lye כַּפָּֽי׃ SDBH my hands

If I wash myself with sheleg (snow), and make my hands clean with lye,

31

אָ֭ז SDBH then בַּשַּׁ֣חַת SDBH into the pit תִּטְבְּלֵ֑נִי SDBH You would plunge me וְ֝תִֽעֲב֗וּנִי SDBH would despise me שַׂלְמוֹתָֽי׃ SDBH and even my own clothes

Yet shalt Thou plunge me in the shachat (slime pit), and mine own clothes shall abhor me.

32

כִּי־ For לֹא־ SDBH He is not אִ֣ישׁ SDBH a man כָּמֹ֣נִי SDBH like me אֶֽעֱנֶ֑נּוּ SDBH that I can answer Him נָב֥וֹא SDBH that we can take יַ֝חְדָּ֗ו SDBH each other בַּמִּשְׁפָּֽט׃ SDBH to court

For He is not an ish, as I am, that I should answer Him, and we should come together in mishpat (in the court).

33

לֹ֣א SDBH Nor יֵשׁ־ is there בֵּינֵ֣ינוּ SDBH between us מוֹכִ֑יחַ SDBH a mediator יָשֵׁ֖ת SDBH to lay יָד֣וֹ SDBH his hand עַל־ upon us שְׁנֵֽינוּ׃ SDBH both

Neither is there any mochiach (arbitrator) between us, that might lay his yad upon us both.

34

יָסֵ֣ר SDBH Let Him remove מֵעָלַ֣י from me שִׁבְט֑וֹ SDBH His rod וְ֝אֵמָת֗וֹ SDBH so that His terror אַֽל־ will no תְּבַעֲתַֽנִּי׃ SDBH longer frighten me

Let Him take His shevet (rod) away from me, and let not His fear terrify me.

35

אַֽ֭דַבְּרָה SDBH Then I would speak וְלֹ֣א SDBH without אִירָאֶ֑נּוּ SDBH fear of Him כִּ֥י But לֹא־ SDBH as it is כֵ֥ן SDBH . . . אָ֝נֹכִ֗י SDBH I עִמָּדִֽי׃ am on my own

Then would I speak, and not fear Him; but it is not ken (so) with me.
