Iyov 34 — Hebrew–OJB Interlinear

וַיַּ֥עַן SDBH continued אֱלִיה֗וּא SDBH Then Elihu וַיֹּאמַֽר׃ SDBH . . .

Furthermore Elihu answered and said,

2

שִׁמְע֣וּ SDBH Hear חֲכָמִ֣ים SDBH O wise men מִלָּ֑י SDBH my words וְ֝יֹדְעִ֗ים SDBH O men of learning הַאֲזִ֥ינוּ SDBH give ear לִֽי׃ to me

Hear my words, O ye chachamim; and give ear unto me, ye that have da'as.

כִּי־ For אֹ֭זֶן SDBH the ear מִלִּ֣ין SDBH words תִּבְחָ֑ן SDBH tests וְ֝חֵ֗ךְ SDBH as the mouth יִטְעַ֥ם SDBH tastes לֶאֱכֹֽל׃ SDBH food

For the ozen trieth words, as the mouth tasteth food.

מִשְׁפָּ֥ט SDBH what is right נִבְחֲרָה־ SDBH Let us choose לָּ֑נוּ for ourselves נֵדְעָ֖ה SDBH let us learn בֵינֵ֣ינוּ SDBH together מַה־ SDBH what טּֽוֹב׃ SDBH is good

Let us choose for ourselves what is mishpat (right); let us know among ourselves what is tov.

כִּֽי־ For אָ֭מַר SDBH has declared אִיּ֣וֹב SDBH Job צָדַ֑קְתִּי SDBH I am righteous וְ֝אֵ֗ל SDBH yet G-d הֵסִ֥יר SDBH has deprived me of מִשְׁפָּטִֽי׃ SDBH justice

For Iyov hath said, I am innocent; and El hath taken away my mishpat (right).

עַל־ about מִשְׁפָּטִ֥י SDBH my case אֲכַזֵּ֑ב SDBH Would I lie אָנ֖וּשׁ SDBH is incurable חִצִּ֣י SDBH My wound בְלִי־ SDBH though I am without פָֽשַׁע׃ SDBH transgression

I declare the mishpat (case) against me a lie; though without peysha, my arrow wound is incurable.

מִי־ SDBH What גֶ֥בֶר SDBH man כְּאִיּ֑וֹב SDBH is like Job יִֽשְׁתֶּה־ SDBH [who] drinks up לַּ֥עַג SDBH derision כַּמָּֽיִם׃ SDBH like water

What gever is like Iyov, who drinketh up the scorn [of his friends] like mayim?

8

וְאָרַ֣ח SDBH He keeps לְ֭חֶבְרָה SDBH company עִם־ with פֹּ֣עֲלֵי SDBH evildoers אָ֑וֶן SDBH . . . וְ֝לָלֶ֗כֶת SDBH and walks עִם־ with אַנְשֵׁי־ SDBH men רֶֽשַׁע׃ SDBH wicked

Who goeth in chaverah with the po'alei aven (workers of iniquity, evildoers), and walketh with anshei resha.

9

כִּֽי־ For אָ֭מַר SDBH he has said לֹ֣א SDBH nothing יִסְכָּן־ SDBH It profits גָּ֑בֶר SDBH a man בִּ֝רְצֹת֗וֹ SDBH that he should delight עִם־ in אֱלֹהִֽים׃ SDBH G-d

For he hath said, It profiteth a gever nothing that he should please Elohim.

10

לָכֵ֤ן׀ SDBH Therefore אַ֥נֲשֵׁ֥י SDBH O men לֵבָ֗ב SDBH of understanding שִׁמְע֫וּ SDBH listen לִ֥י to me חָלִ֖לָה SDBH Far be it לָאֵ֥ל SDBH from G-d מֵרֶ֗שַׁע SDBH to do wrong וְשַׁדַּ֥י SDBH and from the Almighty מֵעָֽוֶל׃ SDBH to act unjustly

Therefore pay heed unto me ye anashei levav (men of understanding); far be it from El, that He should do evil, and from Shaddai, that He should do wrong.

11

כִּ֤י For פֹ֣עַל SDBH according to a man’s deeds אָ֭דָם SDBH vvv יְשַׁלֶּם־ SDBH He repays ל֑וֹ him וּֽכְאֹ֥רַח SDBH ways אִ֝֗ישׁ SDBH according to a man’s יַמְצִאֶֽנּוּ׃ SDBH He brings consequences

For the po'al adam (work of a man) shall He repay unto him, and make every man to find according to the man's ways.

12

אַף־ SDBH Indeed אָמְנָ֗ם SDBH it is true אֵ֥ל SDBH that G-d לֹֽא־ SDBH does not יַרְשִׁ֑יעַ SDBH act wickedly וְ֝שַׁדַּ֗י SDBH and the Almighty לֹֽא־ SDBH does not יְעַוֵּ֥ת SDBH pervert מִשְׁפָּֽט׃ SDBH justice

Yea, surely El will not do wickedly, neither will Shaddai pervert mishpat (justice).

מִֽי־ SDBH Who פָקַ֣ד SDBH gave Him charge עָלָ֣יו אָ֑רְצָה SDBH over the earth וּמִ֥י SDBH Who שָׂ֝֗ם SDBH appointed [Him] תֵּבֵ֥ל SDBH world כֻּלָּֽהּ׃ [over] the whole

Who hath given Him right to rule the earth? Or who hath appointed Him over the tevel?

14

אִם־ SDBH If יָשִׂ֣ים SDBH He were to set אֵלָ֣יו to it לִבּ֑וֹ SDBH His heart רוּח֥וֹ SDBH His Spirit וְ֝נִשְׁמָת֗וֹ SDBH and breath אֵלָ֥יו . . . יֶאֱסֹֽף׃ SDBH and withdraw

If He should so determine, if He gather unto Himself His Ruach and His Neshamah,

15

יִגְוַ֣ע SDBH would perish כָּל־ all בָּשָׂ֣ר SDBH flesh יָ֑חַד SDBH together וְ֝אָדָ֗ם SDBH and mankind עַל־ to עָפָ֥ר SDBH the dust יָשֽׁוּב׃ SDBH would return

All basar would perish together, and adam would return unto aphar.

16

וְאִם־ SDBH If בִּ֥ינָה SDBH you have understanding שִׁמְעָה־ SDBH hear זֹּ֑את SDBH this הַ֝אֲזִ֗ינָה SDBH listen to לְק֣וֹל SDBH . . . מִלָּֽי׃ SDBH my words

If now thou hast binah, hear this: pay heed to the kol (voice) of my words.

17

הַאַ֬ף SDBH Could שׂוֹנֵ֣א SDBH one who hates מִשְׁפָּ֣ט SDBH justice יַחֲב֑וֹשׁ SDBH govern וְאִם־ SDBH . . . צַדִּ֖יק SDBH the just כַּבִּ֣יר SDBH and mighty One תַּרְשִֽׁיעַ׃ SDBH Will you condemn

Shall even one that hateth mishpat (right) govern? And wilt thou condemn Him that is Tzaddik and Kabir (the Mighty One)?

18

הַאֲמֹ֣ר SDBH who says לְמֶ֣לֶךְ SDBH to kings בְּלִיָּ֑עַל SDBH [You are] worthless רָ֝שָׁ֗ע SDBH [You are] wicked אֶל־ and to נְדִיבִֽים׃ SDBH nobles

Is it fit to say to a melech, Thou art beli'ya'al? And to nobles, Ye are rasha.

19

אֲשֶׁ֤ר SDBH who לֹֽא־ SDBH is not נָשָׂ֨א׀ SDBH partial פְּנֵ֥י . . . שָׂרִ֗ים SDBH to princes וְלֹ֣א SDBH and does not נִכַּר־ SDBH favor שׁ֭וֹעַ SDBH rich לִפְנֵי־ over דָ֑ל SDBH poor כִּֽי־ For מַעֲשֵׂ֖ה SDBH the work יָדָ֣יו SDBH of His hands כֻּלָּֽם׃ they are all

Who shows no partiality to sarim (princes), nor regardeth the rich more than the poor? For they all are the ma'aseh (work) of His hands.

20

רֶ֤גַע׀ SDBH in an instant יָמֻתוּ֮ SDBH They die וַחֲצ֪וֹת SDBH in the middle לָ֥יְלָה SDBH of the night יְגֹעֲשׁ֣וּ SDBH convulse עָ֣ם SDBH The people וְיַעֲבֹ֑רוּ SDBH and pass away וְיָסִ֥ירוּ SDBH are removed אַ֝בִּ֗יר SDBH the mighty לֹ֣א SDBH without בְיָֽד׃ SDBH human hand

In a moment shall they die, and at chatzot lailah the people shall be shaken, and pass away, and the mighty shall be taken away without human hand.

21

כִּי־ For עֵ֭ינָיו SDBH His eyes [are] עַל־ on דַּרְכֵי־ SDBH the ways אִ֑ישׁ SDBH of a man וְֽכָל־ vvv צְעָדָ֥יו SDBH his every step יִרְאֶֽה׃ SDBH and He sees

For His eyes are upon the darkhei ish and He seeth all his goings.

22

אֵֽין־ SDBH There is no חֹ֭שֶׁךְ SDBH darkness וְאֵ֣ין SDBH [or] צַלְמָ֑וֶת SDBH deep shadow לְהִסָּ֥תֶר SDBH can hide שָׁ֝֗ם SDBH where פֹּ֣עֲלֵי SDBH the workers אָֽוֶן׃ SDBH of iniquity

There is no choshech, nor tzalmavet, where the po'alei aven (evildoers) may hide themselves.

23

כִּ֤י For לֹ֣א SDBH need not עַל־ . . . אִ֭ישׁ SDBH a man יָשִׂ֣ים SDBH examine ע֑וֹד further לַהֲלֹ֥ךְ SDBH [or] have him approach אֶל־ . . . אֵ֝֗ל SDBH G-d בַּמִּשְׁפָּֽט׃ SDBH for judgment

For He does not need to consider an ish further for anyone to go before El in mispat (judgment).

24

יָרֹ֣עַ SDBH He shatters כַּבִּירִ֣ים SDBH the mighty לֹא־ SDBH without חֵ֑קֶר SDBH inquiry וַיַּעֲמֵ֖ד SDBH and sets up אֲחֵרִ֣ים SDBH others תַּחְתָּֽם׃ SDBH in their place

He shall break in pieces kabirim (mighty men) without investigation, and sets acherim (others) in their place.

25

לָכֵ֗ן SDBH Therefore יַ֭כִּיר SDBH He recognizes מַעְבָּֽדֵיהֶ֑ם SDBH their deeds וְהָ֥פַךְ SDBH He overthrows [them] לַ֝֗יְלָה SDBH in the night וְיִדַּכָּֽאוּ׃ SDBH and they are crushed

Therefore He knoweth their works, and He overthroweth them in the lailah, so that they are crushed.

26

תַּֽחַת־ SDBH for רְשָׁעִ֥ים SDBH their wickedness סְפָקָ֗ם SDBH He strikes them בִּמְק֥וֹם SDBH in full רֹאִֽים׃ SDBH view

He striketh them as resha'im in the open sight of others;

27

אֲשֶׁ֣ר SDBH because עַל־ . . . כֵּ֭ן SDBH . . . סָ֣רוּ SDBH they turned aside מֵֽאַחֲרָ֑יו SDBH from Him וְכָל־ for any דְּ֝רָכָ֗יו SDBH of His ways לֹ֣א SDBH and had no הִשְׂכִּֽילוּ׃ SDBH regard

Because they turned back from following Him, and would not regard any of His drakhim;

28

לְהָבִ֣יא SDBH to come עָ֭לָיו before Him צַֽעֲקַת־ SDBH They caused the cry דָּ֑ל SDBH of the poor וְצַעֲקַ֖ת SDBH the outcry עֲנִיִּ֣ים SDBH of the afflicted יִשְׁמָֽע׃ SDBH and He heard

So that they caused the cry of the poor to come unto Him, and He heareth the cry of the aniyim.

29

וְה֤וּא SDBH But when He יַשְׁקִ֨ט׀ SDBH remains silent וּמִ֥י SDBH who יַרְשִׁ֗עַ SDBH can condemn Him וְיַסְתֵּ֣ר SDBH When He hides פָּ֭נִים His face וּמִ֣י SDBH who יְשׁוּרֶ֑נּוּ SDBH can see Him וְעַל־ Yet He watches over גּ֖וֹי SDBH and nation וְעַל־ . . . אָדָ֣ם SDBH man יָֽחַד׃ SDBH both

When He giveth quietness, who then can condemn? When He hideth His panim, who then can behold Him? Whether it be a nation, or an individual only?

30

מִ֭מְּלֹךְ SDBH should not rule אָדָ֥ם SDBH men חָנֵ֗ף SDBH that g-dless מִמֹּ֥קְשֵׁי SDBH or lay snares עָֽם׃ SDBH for the people

That the chanef (hypocrite) reign not, nor those who ensnare the people.

31

כִּֽי־ Suppose אֶל־ to אֵ֭ל SDBH G-d הֶאָמַ֥ר SDBH someone says נָשָׂ֗אתִי SDBH I have endured my punishment לֹ֣א SDBH no more אֶחְבֹּֽל׃ SDBH I will offend

For has anyone said unto El, I have borne chastisement, I will not offend any more;

32

בִּלְעֲדֵ֣י SDBH what I cannot אֶ֭חֱזֶה SDBH see אַתָּ֣ה SDBH . . . הֹרֵ֑נִי SDBH Teach me אִֽם־ SDBH if עָ֥וֶל SDBH wrong פָּ֝עַ֗לְתִּי SDBH I have done לֹ֣א SDBH I will not אֹסִֽיף׃ SDBH do it again

Teach Thou me what I see not; im (if) I have done iniquity, I will do no more?

33

הַֽמֵעִמְּךָ֬ on your own terms יְשַׁלְמֶ֨נָּה SDBH Should G-d repay you כִּֽי־ when מָאַ֗סְתָּ SDBH you have disavowed His כִּי־ . . . אַתָּ֣ה SDBH You תִבְחַ֣ר SDBH must choose וְלֹא־ SDBH not אָ֑נִי SDBH I וּֽמַה־ SDBH what יָדַ֥עְתָּ SDBH you know דַבֵּֽר׃ SDBH so tell me

Will He then recompense to suit you, just because you disavow it? Thou must choose, not I; therefore speak that of which thou hast da'as.

34

אַנְשֵׁ֣י SDBH Men לֵ֭בָב SDBH of understanding יֹ֣אמְרוּ SDBH will declare לִ֑י to me וְגֶ֥בֶר SDBH men חָ֝כָ֗ם SDBH and the wise שֹׁמֵ֥עַֽ SDBH who hear me לִֽי׃ [will say]

Let anshei levav (men of understanding) say to me, and let a gever chacham who pays heed unto me say,

35

אִ֭יּוֹב SDBH Job לֹא־ SDBH without בְדַ֣עַת SDBH knowledge יְדַבֵּ֑ר SDBH speaks וּ֝דְבָרָ֗יו SDBH his words לֹ֣א SDBH lack בְהַשְׂכֵּֽיל׃ SDBH insight

Iyov hath spoken without da'as, and his words were without seichel.

36

אָבִ֗י SDBH If only יִבָּחֵ֣ן SDBH were tried אִיּ֣וֹב SDBH Job עַד־ SDBH to נֶ֑צַח SDBH the utmost עַל־ for תְּ֝שֻׁבֹ֗ת SDBH answering בְּאַנְשֵׁי־ SDBH man אָֽוֶן׃ SDBH like a wicked

Iyov ought to be tried unto the limit, because his answers are those of anshei aven.

37

כִּ֥י For יֹ֘סִ֤יף SDBH he adds עַֽל־ to חַטָּאת֣וֹ SDBH his sin פֶ֭שַׁע SDBH rebellion בֵּינֵ֣ינוּ SDBH among us יִסְפּ֑וֹק SDBH he claps [his hands] וְיֶ֖רֶב and multiplies אֲמָרָ֣יו SDBH his words לָאֵֽל׃ס SDBH against G-d

For he addeth peysha unto his chattat, he clappeth his hands [shaking fist at G-d] among us, and multiplieth his words against El.
