Iyov 15 — Hebrew–OJB Interlinear

וַ֭יַּעַן SDBH replied אֱלִיפַ֥ז SDBH Then Eliphaz הַֽתֵּימָנִ֗י SDBH the Temanite וַיֹּאמַֽר׃ SDBH . . .

Then answered Eliphaz the Temani, and said,

הֶֽחָכָ֗ם SDBH Does a wise יַעֲנֶ֥ה SDBH man answer דַֽעַת־ SDBH counsel ר֑וּחַ SDBH with empty וִֽימַלֵּ֖א SDBH or fill קָדִ֣ים SDBH with the hot east wind בִּטְנֽוֹ׃ SDBH his belly

Should a chacham (wise man) utter vain knowledge, and fill his inner being with the east wind?

הוֹכֵ֣חַ SDBH Should he argue בְּ֭דָבָר SDBH words לֹ֣א SDBH with useless יִסְכּ֑וֹן SDBH . . . וּ֝מִלִּ֗ים SDBH or speeches לֹא־ SDBH that serve no יוֹעִ֥יל SDBH purpose בָּֽם׃

Should he reason with unprofitable davar (talk)? Or with speeches wherewith no good is done?

אַף־ SDBH But אַ֭תָּה SDBH you תָּפֵ֣ר SDBH even undermine יִרְאָ֑ה SDBH the fear [of G-d] וְתִגְרַ֥ע SDBH and hinder שִׂ֝יחָ֗ה SDBH meditation לִפְנֵי־ before אֵֽל׃ SDBH Him

Yea, thou makest void yireh [Elohim], and doth diminish si'akh (meditation) before El.

כִּ֤י For יְאַלֵּ֣ף SDBH instructs עֲוֺנְךָ֣ SDBH your iniquity פִ֑יךָ SDBH your mouth וְ֝תִבְחַ֗ר SDBH and you choose לְשׁ֣וֹן SDBH the language עֲרוּמִֽים׃ SDBH of the crafty

For thy mouth uttereth thine avon, and thou choosest the leshon arumim (tongue of the crafty).

יַרְשִֽׁיעֲךָ֣ SDBH condemns you פִ֣יךָ SDBH Your own mouth וְלֹא־ SDBH not אָ֑נִי SDBH mine וּ֝שְׂפָתֶ֗יךָ SDBH your own lips יַעֲנוּ־ SDBH testify בָֽךְ׃ against you

Thine own mouth condemneth thee, and loh Ani (not I); yea, thine own lips testify against thee.

הֲרִאישׁ֣וֹן SDBH Were you the first אָ֭דָם SDBH man תִּוָּלֵ֑ד SDBH ever born וְלִפְנֵ֖י before גְבָע֣וֹת SDBH the hills חוֹלָֽלְתָּ׃ SDBH Were you brought forth

Art thou harishon adam (the first man) that was born? Or wast thou made before the hills?

הַבְס֣וֹד SDBH on the council אֱל֣וֹהַ SDBH of G-d תִּשְׁמָ֑ע SDBH Do you listen in וְתִגְרַ֖ע SDBH or limit אֵלֶ֣יךָ to yourself חָכְמָֽה׃ SDBH wisdom

Hast thou attended to the sod Eloah (counsel of G-d)? And dost thou limit chochmah to thyself?

מַה־ SDBH What יָּ֭דַעְתָּ SDBH do you know וְלֹ֣א SDBH that we do not נֵדָ֑ע SDBH . . . תָּ֝בִ֗ין SDBH What do you understand וְֽלֹא־ SDBH that is not עִמָּ֥נוּ clear to us הֽוּא׃ SDBH . . .

Of what dost thou have da'as, that we know not? What understandest thou, which is not in us?

גַּם־ SDBH Both שָׂ֣ב SDBH the gray-haired גַּם־ SDBH and יָשִׁ֣ישׁ SDBH the aged בָּ֑נוּ are on our side כַּבִּ֖יר SDBH men much older מֵאָבִ֣יךָ SDBH than your father יָמִֽים׃ SDBH . . .

Both the grayheaded and very aged men are among us, much elder than avicha.

11

הַמְעַ֣ט SDBH not enough מִ֭מְּךָ for you תַּנְחֻמ֣וֹת SDBH Are the consolations אֵ֑ל SDBH of G-d וְ֝דָבָ֗ר SDBH even words לָאַ֥ט SDBH [spoken] gently עִמָּֽךְ׃ to you

Are the tanechumot El (consolations of G-d) not enough for thee? Or the davar that deals gently with thee?

מַה־ SDBH Why יִּקָּחֲךָ֥ SDBH carried you away לִבֶּ֑ךָ SDBH has your heart וּֽמַה־ SDBH and why יִּרְזְמ֥וּן SDBH flash עֵינֶֽיךָ׃ SDBH do your eyes

Why doth thine lev carry thee away? And why do thy eyes flash,

כִּֽי־ so that תָשִׁ֣יב SDBH you turn אֶל־ against אֵ֣ל SDBH G-d רוּחֶ֑ךָ SDBH your spirit וְהֹצֵ֖אתָ SDBH from מִפִּ֣יךָ SDBH your mouth מִלִּֽין׃ SDBH and pour such words

That thou ventest thy ruach against El (G-d), and lettest such words pour out of thy mouth?

14

מָֽה־ SDBH What אֱנ֥וֹשׁ SDBH is man כִּֽי־ that יִזְכֶּ֑ה SDBH he should be pure וְכִֽי־ that יִ֝צְדַּ֗ק SDBH he should be righteous יְל֣וּד SDBH or one born אִשָּֽׁה׃ SDBH of woman

What is enosh, that he should be pure [in the sight of Hashem]? And he which is born of an isha, that yitzdak (he should be in the right)?

15

הֵ֣ן If בִּקְדֹשׁוֹ SDBH in His holy ones לֹ֣א SDBH G-d puts no יַאֲמִ֑ין SDBH trust וְ֝שָׁמַ֗יִם SDBH if even the heavens לֹא־ SDBH are not זַכּ֥וּ SDBH pure בְעֵינָֽיו׃ SDBH in His eyes

If He trusteth not His Kadoshim; yea, Shomayim is not pure in His eyes.

16

אַ֭ף SDBH how much less כִּֽי־ . . . נִתְעָ֥ב SDBH who is vile וְֽנֶאֱלָ֑ח SDBH and corrupt אִישׁ־ SDBH man שֹׁתֶ֖ה SDBH who drinks כַמַּ֣יִם SDBH like water עַוְלָֽה׃ SDBH injustice

How much more vile and corrupt is ish, which drinketh iniquity like mayim?

17

אֲחַוְךָ֥ SDBH and I will inform you שְֽׁמַֽע־ SDBH Listen לִ֑י to me וְזֶֽה־ SDBH what חָ֝זִ֗יתִי SDBH I have seen וַאֲסַפֵּֽרָה׃ SDBH I will describe

I will show thee, shema to me; and that which I have seen I will declare;

18

אֲשֶׁר־ SDBH what חֲכָמִ֥ים SDBH by wise men יַגִּ֑ידוּ SDBH was declared וְלֹ֥א SDBH and was not כִֽ֝חֲד֗וּ SDBH concealed מֵאֲבוֹתָֽם׃ SDBH from their fathers

Things which chachamim declare from their avot without concealment;

19

לָהֶ֣ם to whom לְ֭בַדָּם SDBH alone נִתְּנָ֣ה was given הָאָ֑רֶץ SDBH the land וְלֹא־ SDBH when no עָ֖בַר SDBH passed זָ֣ר SDBH foreigner בְּתוֹכָֽם׃ SDBH among them

Unto whom alone ha'aretz was given, and no zar passed among them.

20

כָּל־ all יְמֵ֣י SDBH days רָ֭שָׁע SDBH A wicked ה֣וּא SDBH his מִתְחוֹלֵ֑ל SDBH man writhes in pain וּמִסְפַּ֥ר SDBH only a few שָׁ֝נִ֗ים SDBH years נִצְפְּנ֥וּ SDBH are reserved לֶעָרִֽיץ׃ SDBH for the ruthless

The reshah travaileth with pain all his yamim, and numbered shanim are reserved for the oppressor.

21

קוֹל־ SDBH Sounds פְּחָדִ֥ים SDBH of terror בְּאָזְנָ֑יו SDBH fill his ears בַּ֝שָּׁל֗וֹם SDBH in his prosperity שׁוֹדֵ֥ד SDBH the destroyer יְבוֹאֶֽנּוּ׃ SDBH attacks him

A dreadful sound is in his oznayim; during shalom the shoded (destroyer) shall come upon him.

22

לֹא־ SDBH vvv יַאֲמִ֣ין SDBH He despairs of שׁ֭וּב SDBH his return מִנִּי־ from חֹ֑שֶׁךְ SDBH darkness וְצָפוּ SDBH is marked ה֣וּא SDBH he אֱלֵי־ for חָֽרֶב׃ SDBH the sword

He believeth not in a return from choshech, and he is marked for the cherev.

23

נֹ֘דֵ֤ד SDBH wanders about ה֣וּא SDBH He לַלֶּ֣חֶם SDBH as food אַיֵּ֑ה SDBH for vultures יָדַ֓ע׀ SDBH he knows כִּֽי־ . . . נָכ֖וֹן SDBH . . . בְּיָד֣וֹ SDBH is at hand יֽוֹם־ SDBH the day חֹֽשֶׁךְ׃ SDBH of darkness

He wandereth about after lechem, saying, Where is it? He has da'as the Yom Choshech is near at hand for him.

24

יְֽ֭בַעֲתֻהוּ SDBH terrify him צַ֣ר SDBH Distress וּמְצוּקָ֑ה SDBH and anguish תִּ֝תְקְפֵ֗הוּ SDBH overwhelming him כְּמֶ֤לֶךְ׀ SDBH like a king עָתִ֬יד SDBH poised לַכִּידֽוֹר׃ SDBH to attack

Distress and anguish shall make him afraid; they shall seize him as a melech poised for battle.

25

כִּֽי־ For נָטָ֣ה SDBH he has stretched out אֶל־ against אֵ֣ל SDBH G-d יָד֑וֹ SDBH his hand וְאֶל־ against שַׁ֝דַּ֗י SDBH the Almighty יִתְגַּבָּֽר׃ SDBH and has vaunted himself

For he stretcheth out his yad against El (G-d), and with insolence vaunts himself against Shaddai.

26

יָר֣וּץ SDBH rushing אֵלָ֣יו at Him בְּצַוָּ֑אר SDBH headlong בַּ֝עֲבִ֗י SDBH with a thick גַּבֵּ֥י SDBH studded מָֽגִנָּֽיו׃ SDBH shield

He charges against Him, with a stiff neck, with the thick bosses of his mogen (shield);

27

כִּֽי־ Though כִסָּ֣ה SDBH is covered פָנָ֣יו his face בְּחֶלְבּ֑וֹ SDBH with fat וַיַּ֖עַשׂ SDBH bulges פִּימָ֣ה SDBH with flesh עֲלֵי־ . . . כָֽסֶל׃ SDBH and his waistline

Though he covereth his panim with his fatness, and addeth fat on his flanks;

28

וַיִּשְׁכּ֤וֹן׀ SDBH he will dwell עָ֘רִ֤ים SDBH cities נִכְחָד֗וֹת SDBH in ruined בָּ֭תִּים SDBH houses לֹא־ SDBH in abandoned יֵ֣שְׁבוּ SDBH . . . לָ֑מוֹ אֲשֶׁ֖ר SDBH - הִתְעַתְּד֣וּ SDBH destined לְגַלִּֽים׃ SDBH to become rubble

And he dwelleth in desolate towns, and in batim (houses) which no man inhabiteth, which are ready to crumble to rubble.

29

לֹֽא־ SDBH He will no יֶ֭עְשַׁר SDBH longer be rich וְלֹא־ SDBH will not יָק֣וּם SDBH endure חֵיל֑וֹ SDBH his wealth וְלֹֽא־ SDBH will not יִטֶּ֖ה SDBH overspread לָאָ֣רֶץ SDBH the land מִנְלָֽם׃ SDBH His possessions

He shall not be osher, neither shall his substance continue; neither shall their possessions spread over ha'aretz.

30

לֹֽא־ SDBH He will not יָס֨וּר׀ SDBH escape מִנִּי־ from חֹ֗שֶׁךְ SDBH the darkness יֹֽ֭נַקְתּוֹ SDBH his shoots תְּיַבֵּ֣שׁ SDBH will wither שַׁלְהָ֑בֶת SDBH the flame וְ֝יָס֗וּר SDBH will carry him away בְּר֣וּחַ SDBH and the breath פִּֽיו׃ SDBH of G-d’s mouth

He shall not escape from choshech; the flame shall wither his branches, and in the ruach of his mouth shall he perish.

31

אַל־ Let him not יַאֲמֵ֣ן SDBH with trust בַּשּׁוֹ SDBH in emptiness נִתְעָ֑ה SDBH deceive himself כִּי־ for שָׁ֝֗וְא SDBH emptiness תִּהְיֶ֥ה will be תְמוּרָתֽוֹ׃ SDBH his reward

Let not him that is deceived trust in shav (vanity); for shav shall be his recompense.

32

בְּֽלֹא־ SDBH before י֭וֹמוֹ SDBH his time תִּמָּלֵ֑א SDBH It will be paid in full וְ֝כִפָּת֗וֹ SDBH and his branch לֹ֣א SDBH will not רַעֲנָֽנָה׃ SDBH flourish

His Yom is not yet; then it is accomplished, and his branch shall not flourish.

33

יַחְמֹ֣ס SDBH stripped of כַּגֶּ֣פֶן SDBH He will be like a vine בִּסְר֑וֹ SDBH its unripe grapes וְיַשְׁלֵ֥ךְ SDBH that sheds כַּ֝זַּ֗יִת SDBH like an olive tree נִצָּתֽוֹ׃ SDBH its blossoms

He shall shake off his unripe grape like the gefen, and shall cast off his blossom like the zayit (olive tree).

34

כִּֽי־ For עֲדַ֣ת SDBH the company חָנֵ֣ף SDBH of the g-dless גַּלְמ֑וּד SDBH [will be] barren וְ֝אֵ֗שׁ SDBH and fire אָכְלָ֥ה SDBH will consume אָֽהֳלֵי־ SDBH the tents שֹֽׁחַד׃ SDBH of bribery

For the Adat Chanef (congregation of hypocrites) shall be barren, and eish shall consume the ohalim of bribery.

35

הָרֹ֣ה SDBH They conceive עָ֭מָל SDBH trouble וְיָ֣לֹד SDBH and give birth to אָ֑וֶן SDBH evil וּ֝בִטְנָ֗ם SDBH their womb תָּכִ֥ין SDBH is pregnant with מִרְמָֽה׃ס SDBH deceit

They conceive amal (trouble), and give birth to evil, and their belly worketh mirmar (deceit).
