Yeshayah 5 — Hebrew–OJB Interlinear

אָשִׁ֤ירָה SDBH I will sing נָּא֙ . . . לִֽידִידִ֔י SDBH for my beloved שִׁירַ֥ת SDBH a song דּוֹדִ֖י SDBH of [his] לְכַרְמ֑וֹ SDBH vineyard כֶּ֛רֶם SDBH a vineyard הָיָ֥ה had לִֽידִידִ֖י SDBH My beloved בְּקֶ֥רֶן SDBH hill בֶּן־ SDBH on a very fertile שָֽׁמֶן׃ SDBH . . .

Now will I sing of my beloved a shirat dodi touching His kerem (vineyard). My beloved had a kerem (vineyard) in a very fruitful hill;

וַֽיְעַזְּקֵ֣הוּ SDBH He dug it up וַֽיְסַקְּלֵ֗הוּ SDBH and cleared the stones וַיִּטָּעֵ֙הוּ֙ SDBH and planted שֹׂרֵ֔ק SDBH the finest vines וַיִּ֤בֶן SDBH He built מִגְדָּל֙ SDBH a watchtower בְּתוֹכ֔וֹ SDBH in the middle וְגַם־ SDBH and יֶ֖קֶב SDBH a winepress {as well} חָצֵ֣ב SDBH dug out בּ֑וֹ וַיְקַ֛ו SDBH He waited for [the vineyard] לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת SDBH to yield עֲנָבִ֖ים SDBH good grapes וַיַּ֥עַשׂ SDBH but the fruit it produced בְּאֻשִֽׁים׃ SDBH was sour

And He dug it up, and gathered out the stones thereof, and planted it with the choicest vine, and built a migdal in the midst of it, and also made a yekev (winepress) therein; and He looked that it should bring forth anavim (grapes), and it brought forth b'ushim (wild grapes).

וְעַתָּ֛ה SDBH And now יוֹשֵׁ֥ב SDBH O dwellers יְרוּשָׁלִַ֖ם SDBH of Jerusalem וְאִ֣ישׁ SDBH and men יְהוּדָ֑ה SDBH of Judah שִׁפְטוּ־ SDBH you to judge נָ֕א I exhort בֵּינִ֖י SDBH between Me וּבֵ֥ין SDBH . . . כַּרְמִֽי׃ SDBH and My vineyard

And now, O inhabitants of Yerushalayim, and Ish Yehudah, judge, now, between Me and My kerem (vineyard).

מַה־ SDBH What לַּעֲשׂ֥וֹת SDBH could have been done עוֹד֙ more לְכַרְמִ֔י SDBH for My vineyard וְלֹ֥א SDBH than עָשִׂ֖יתִי SDBH I have done בּ֑וֹ for it מַדּ֧וּעַ SDBH Why קִוֵּ֛יתִי SDBH when I expected לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת SDBH - עֲנָבִ֖ים SDBH [sweet] grapes וַיַּ֥עַשׂ SDBH did it bring forth בְּאֻשִֽׁים׃ SDBH sour fruit

What could have been done more to My kerem (vineyard), that I have not done in it? Why, when I looked that it should bring forth anavim, brought it forth b'ushim?

וְעַתָּה֙ SDBH Now אוֹדִֽיעָה־ SDBH I will tell you נָּ֣א . . . אֶתְכֶ֔ם SDBH - אֵ֛ת SDBH - אֲשֶׁר־ SDBH what אֲנִ֥י SDBH I עֹשֶׂ֖ה SDBH am about to do לְכַרְמִ֑י SDBH to My vineyard הָסֵ֤ר SDBH I will take away מְשׂוּכָּתוֹ֙ SDBH its hedge וְהָיָ֣ה and it will be לְבָעֵ֔ר SDBH consumed פָּרֹ֥ץ SDBH I will tear down גְּדֵר֖וֹ SDBH its wall וְהָיָ֥ה and it will be לְמִרְמָֽס׃ SDBH trampled

And now then; I will tell you now what I will do to my kerem (vineyard): I will take away the hedge thereof, and it shall be grazed upon; and break down the wall thereof, and it shall be trampled down;

וַאֲשִׁיתֵ֣הוּ SDBH I will make בָתָ֗ה SDBH it a wasteland לֹ֤א SDBH neither יִזָּמֵר֙ SDBH pruned וְלֹ֣א SDBH nor יֵעָדֵ֔ר SDBH cultivated וְעָלָ֥ה SDBH will grow up שָׁמִ֖יר SDBH and briers וָשָׁ֑יִת SDBH and thorns וְעַ֤ל - הֶעָבִים֙ SDBH the clouds אֲצַוֶּ֔ה SDBH I will command מֵהַמְטִ֥יר SDBH shall not fall עָלָ֖יו on it מָטָֽר׃ SDBH that rain

And I will lay it waste; it shall not be pruned, nor cultivated; but there shall come up briers and thorns; I will also command the clouds that they rain no matar (rain) upon it.

כִּ֣י For כֶ֜רֶם SDBH the vineyard יְהוָ֤ה SDBH Hashem/Adonoi צְבָאוֹת֙ SDBH of Hosts בֵּ֣ית SDBH is the house יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל SDBH of Israel וְאִ֣ישׁ SDBH and the men יְהוּדָ֔ה SDBH of Judah נְטַ֖ע SDBH are the plant שַׁעֲשׁוּעָ֑יו SDBH of His delight וַיְקַ֤ו SDBH He looked לְמִשְׁפָּט֙ SDBH for justice וְהִנֵּ֣ה but saw מִשְׂפָּ֔ח SDBH bloodshed לִצְדָקָ֖ה SDBH for righteousness וְהִנֵּ֥ה but heard צְעָקָֽה׃ס SDBH a cry of distress

For the Kerem Hashem Tzva'os is Bais Yisroel, and the Ish Yehudah are the planting of His delight; and He looked for mishpat (justice), but, hinei, mishpach (bloodshed, rapaciousness); for tzedakah, but, hinei, tze'akah (cry of distress).

ה֗וֹי SDBH Woe מַגִּיעֵ֥י SDBH to you who add בַ֙יִת֙ SDBH house בְּבַ֔יִת SDBH to house שָׂדֶ֥ה SDBH field בְשָׂדֶ֖ה SDBH to field יַקְרִ֑יבוּ SDBH and join עַ֚ד SDBH until אֶ֣פֶס SDBH no מָק֔וֹם SDBH place [is left] וְהֽוּשַׁבְתֶּ֥ם SDBH and you live לְבַדְּכֶ֖ם SDBH alone בְּקֶ֥רֶב SDBH in הָאָֽרֶץ׃ SDBH the land

Hoy unto them that add bais to bais, that join sadeh to sadeh, till there be no makom (place, home), that ye alone are dwelling in the midst of ha'aretz!

בְּאָזְנָ֖י SDBH I heard יְהוָ֣ה SDBH Hashem/Adonoi צְבָא֑וֹת SDBH of Hosts {declare} אִם־ SDBH Surely לֹ֞א SDBH . . . בָּתִּ֤ים SDBH houses רַבִּים֙ SDBH many לְשַׁמָּ֣ה SDBH desolate יִֽהְי֔וּ will become גְּדֹלִ֥ים SDBH great mansions וְטוֹבִ֖ים SDBH . . . מֵאֵ֥ין SDBH vvv יוֹשֵֽׁב׃ SDBH left unoccupied

Hashem Tzva'os said in my ozen, Batim rabbim shall be in ruins, gedolim and tovim, with no one to live in them.

10

כִּ֗י For עֲשֶׂ֙רֶת֙ SDBH ten צִמְדֵּי־ SDBH acres כֶ֔רֶם SDBH of vineyard יַעֲשׂ֖וּ SDBH will yield בַּ֣ת SDBH bath [of wine] אֶחָ֑ת SDBH [but] a וְזֶ֥רַע SDBH of seed חֹ֖מֶר SDBH and a homer יַעֲשֶׂ֥ה SDBH [only] אֵיפָֽה׃פ SDBH an ephah [of grain]

Yea, ten yokes of kerem (vineyard) shall yield 10 gallons, and the homer (six bushels) of zera (seed) shall yield an ephah (three-fifths bushel).

11

ה֛וֹי SDBH Woe מַשְׁכִּימֵ֥י SDBH to those who rise early בַבֹּ֖קֶר SDBH in the morning שֵׁכָ֣ר SDBH strong drink יִרְדֹּ֑פוּ SDBH in pursuit of מְאַחֲרֵ֣י SDBH who linger בַנֶּ֔שֶׁף SDBH into the evening יַ֖יִן SDBH by wine יַדְלִיקֵֽם׃ SDBH to be inflamed

Hoy unto them that rise up early in the boker, that they may chase after shekhar (strong drink); that continue until night, till yayin inflame them!

וְהָיָ֨ה - כִנּ֜וֹר SDBH are the lyre וָנֶ֗בֶל SDBH [and] harp תֹּ֧ף SDBH tambourines וְחָלִ֛יל SDBH and flutes וָיַ֖יִן SDBH and wine מִשְׁתֵּיהֶ֑ם SDBH At their feasts וְאֵ֨ת SDBH - פֹּ֤עַל SDBH the actions יְהוָה֙ SDBH Hashem/Adonoi לֹ֣א SDBH They disregard יַבִּ֔יטוּ SDBH - וּמַעֲשֵׂ֥ה SDBH the work יָדָ֖יו SDBH of His hands לֹ֥א SDBH and fail רָאֽוּ׃ SDBH to see

And the kinnor, and the nevel, the tambourine, and flute, and yayin, are in their mishtehim; but they regard not the Po'al Hashem (the work of Hashem), neither consider the ma'aseh of His hands.

לָכֵ֛ן SDBH Therefore גָּלָ֥ה SDBH will go into exile עַמִּ֖י SDBH My people מִבְּלִי־ SDBH for their lack דָ֑עַת SDBH of understanding וּכְבוֹדוֹ֙ SDBH their dignitaries מְתֵ֣י SDBH . . . רָעָ֔ב SDBH are starving וַהֲמוֹנ֖וֹ SDBH and their masses צִחֵ֥ה SDBH are parched צָמָֽא׃ SDBH with thirst

Therefore my people [SEE ISA. 53:8] are gone into the Golus, because they have no da'as; and their men of rank are starved, and their multitude parched with thirst.

14

לָכֵ֗ן SDBH Therefore הִרְחִ֤יבָה SDBH enlarges שְּׁאוֹל֙ SDBH Sheol נַפְשָׁ֔הּ SDBH its throat וּפָעֲרָ֥ה SDBH and opens פִ֖יהָ SDBH jaws לִבְלִי־ SDBH wide its enormous חֹ֑ק SDBH . . . וְיָרַ֨ד SDBH and down go הֲדָרָ֧הּ SDBH [Zion’s] nobles וַהֲמוֹנָ֛הּ SDBH [and] masses וּשְׁאוֹנָ֖הּ SDBH her revelers וְעָלֵ֥ז SDBH and carousers בָּֽהּ׃

Therefore Sheol hath enlarged herself, and opened her mouth without chok (limit); and their nobility, and their masses, and their throngs, and the reveler, shall descend into it.

15

וַיִּשַּׁ֥ח SDBH will be brought low אָדָ֖ם SDBH So mankind וַיִּשְׁפַּל־ SDBH humbled אִ֑ישׁ SDBH and each man וְעֵינֵ֥י SDBH their eyes גְבֹהִ֖ים SDBH the arrogant תִּשְׁפַּֽלְנָה׃ SDBH will lower

And adam shall be abased, and the ish shall be brought low, and the eyes of the haughty shall be humbled;

16

וַיִּגְבַּ֛ה SDBH will be exalted יְהוָ֥ה SDBH Hashem/Adonoi צְבָא֖וֹת SDBH of Hosts בַּמִּשְׁפָּ֑ט SDBH by His justice וְהָאֵל֙ SDBH G-d הַקָּד֔וֹשׁ SDBH and the holy נִקְדָּ֖שׁ SDBH will show Himself holy בִּצְדָקָֽה׃ SDBH in righteousness

But Hashem Tzva'os shall be exalted in mishpat, and HaEl HaKadosh shall show Himself Kadosh in tzedakah.

17

וְרָע֥וּ SDBH will graze כְבָשִׂ֖ים SDBH Lambs כְּדָבְרָ֑ם SDBH as in their own pastures וְחָרְב֥וֹת SDBH in the ruins מֵחִ֖ים SDBH of the wealthy גָּרִ֥ים SDBH and strangers יֹאכֵֽלוּ׃ SDBH will feed

Then shall the kevasim feed as upon their pasture, and the gerim (sojourners) will eat in the ruins of the rich.

18

ה֛וֹי SDBH Woe מֹשְׁכֵ֥י SDBH to those who draw הֶֽעָוֺ֖ן SDBH iniquity בְּחַבְלֵ֣י SDBH with cords הַשָּׁ֑וְא SDBH of deceit וְכַעֲב֥וֹת SDBH ropes הָעֲגָלָ֖ה SDBH with cart חַטָּאָֽה׃ SDBH and pull sin along

Hoy unto them that draw avon (guilt) with cords of deceit, and tug at chatta'ah (sin) as with a cart rope;

19

הָאֹמְרִ֗ים SDBH to those who say יְמַהֵ֧ר׀ SDBH Let Him hurry יָחִ֛ישָׁה SDBH . . . מַעֲשֵׂ֖הוּ SDBH and hasten His work לְמַ֣עַן so that נִרְאֶ֑ה SDBH we may see it וְתִקְרַ֣ב SDBH . . . וְתָב֗וֹאָה SDBH come עֲצַ֛ת SDBH Let the plan קְד֥וֹשׁ SDBH of the Holy יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל SDBH One of Israel וְנֵדָֽעָה׃ס SDBH so that we may know it

That say, Let Him make speed, and hasten His Ma'aseh, that we may see it; and let the Atzat Kadosh Yisroel (purpose of the Holy One of Israel) draw near and come, that we may know it!

20

ה֣וֹי SDBH Woe הָאֹמְרִ֥ים SDBH to those who call לָרַ֛ע SDBH evil ט֖וֹב SDBH good וְלַטּ֣וֹב SDBH and good רָ֑ע SDBH evil שָׂמִ֨ים SDBH who turn חֹ֤שֶׁךְ SDBH darkness לְאוֹר֙ SDBH to light וְא֣וֹר SDBH and light לְחֹ֔שֶׁךְ SDBH to darkness שָׂמִ֥ים SDBH who replace מַ֛ר SDBH bitter לְמָת֖וֹק SDBH with sweet וּמָת֥וֹק SDBH and sweet לְמָֽר׃ס SDBH with bitter

Hoy unto them that call rah tov, and tov rah; that put choshech for ohr, and ohr for choshech; that put mar for matok, and matok for mar!

21

ה֖וֹי SDBH Woe חֲכָמִ֣ים SDBH to those who are wise בְּעֵֽינֵיהֶ֑ם SDBH in their own eyes וְנֶ֥גֶד in פְּנֵיהֶ֖ם their own sight נְבֹנִֽים׃ SDBH and clever

Hoy unto them that are chachamim in their own eyes, and clever in their own sight!

22

ה֕וֹי SDBH Woe גִּבּוֹרִ֖ים SDBH to those who are heroes לִשְׁתּ֣וֹת SDBH in drinking יָ֑יִן SDBH wine וְאַנְשֵׁי־ SDBH and champions חַ֖יִל SDBH . . . לִמְסֹ֥ךְ SDBH in mixing שֵׁכָֽר׃ SDBH strong drink

Hoy unto them that are Gibborim to drink yayin, and anshei chayil to mix shekhar;

23

מַצְדִּיקֵ֥י SDBH who acquit רָשָׁ֖ע SDBH the guilty עֵ֣קֶב SDBH for שֹׁ֑חַד SDBH a bribe וְצִדְקַ֥ת SDBH of justice צַדִּיקִ֖ים SDBH the innocent יָסִ֥ירוּ SDBH and deprive מִמֶּֽנּוּ׃ס . . .

Which justify the rasha for shochad (bribe), and take away the tzidkat tzaddikim from him!

24

לָכֵן֩ SDBH Therefore כֶּאֱכֹ֨ל SDBH consumes קַ֜שׁ SDBH the straw לְשׁ֣וֹן SDBH as a tongue אֵ֗שׁ SDBH of fire וַחֲשַׁ֤שׁ SDBH and as dry grass לֶֽהָבָה֙ SDBH in the flame יִרְפֶּ֔ה SDBH shrivels שָׁרְשָׁם֙ SDBH so their roots כַּמָּ֣ק SDBH . . . יִֽהְיֶ֔ה will decay וּפִרְחָ֖ם SDBH and their blossoms כָּאָבָ֣ק SDBH like dust יַעֲלֶ֑ה SDBH will blow away כִּ֣י for מָאֲס֗וּ SDBH they have rejected אֵ֚ת SDBH - תּוֹרַת֙ SDBH the instruction יְהוָ֣ה SDBH Hashem/Adonoi צְבָא֔וֹת SDBH of Hosts וְאֵ֛ת SDBH - אִמְרַ֥ת SDBH the word קְדֽוֹשׁ־ SDBH of the Holy יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל SDBH One of Israel נִאֵֽצוּ׃ SDBH and despised

Therefore as the eish licketh up the stubble, and the flame consumeth the dry grass, so their shoresh shall be as rottenness, and their blossom shall go up as dust; because they have cast away the Torat Hashem Tzva'os, and spurned the word of the Kadosh Yisroel.

25

עַל־ Therefore כֵּ֡ן SDBH . . . חָרָה֩ SDBH burns אַף־ SDBH the anger יְהוָ֨ה SDBH Hashem/Adonoi בְּעַמּ֜וֹ SDBH against His people וַיֵּ֣ט SDBH is raised יָד֧וֹ SDBH His hand עָלָ֣יו against them וַיַּכֵּ֗הוּ SDBH to strike them down וַֽיִּרְגְּזוּ֙ SDBH quake הֶֽהָרִ֔ים SDBH The mountains וַתְּהִ֧י lie נִבְלָתָ֛ם SDBH and the corpses כַּסּוּחָ֖ה SDBH like refuse בְּקֶ֣רֶב SDBH in חוּצ֑וֹת SDBH the streets בְּכָל־ Despite all זֹאת֙ SDBH this לֹא־ SDBH is not שָׁ֣ב SDBH turned away אַפּ֔וֹ SDBH His anger וְע֖וֹד is still יָד֥וֹ SDBH His hand נְטוּיָֽה׃ SDBH upraised

Therefore is the Af Hashem kindled against His people, and He hath stretched forth His yad against them, and hath struck them down; and the mountains did tremble, and their nevilah were like refuse in the streets. For all this His anger is not turned away, but His yad is stretched out still.

26

וְנָֽשָׂא־ SDBH He lifts נֵ֤ס SDBH a banner לַגּוֹיִם֙ SDBH nations מֵרָח֔וֹק SDBH for the distant וְשָׁ֥רַק SDBH and whistles ל֖וֹ for those מִקְצֵ֣ה SDBH at the ends הָאָ֑רֶץ SDBH of the earth וְהִנֵּ֥ה Behold מְהֵרָ֖ה SDBH how speedily קַ֥ל SDBH and swiftly יָבֽוֹא׃ SDBH they come

And He will lift up a banner to the distant Goyim, and will whistle for him at the ketzeh ha'aretz; hinei, they shall come with speed swiftly;

27

אֵין־ SDBH None עָיֵ֤ף SDBH grows weary וְאֵין־ SDBH [or] כּוֹשֵׁל֙ SDBH stumbles בּ֔וֹ of them לֹ֥א SDBH no יָנ֖וּם SDBH one slumbers וְלֹ֣א SDBH or יִישָׁ֑ן SDBH sleeps וְלֹ֤א SDBH No נִפְתַּח֙ SDBH is loose אֵז֣וֹר SDBH belt חֲלָצָ֔יו SDBH . . . וְלֹ֥א SDBH and no נִתַּ֖ק SDBH is broken שְׂר֥וֹךְ SDBH strap נְעָלָֽיו׃ SDBH sandal

None shall be weary nor stumble among them; none shall slumber nor sleep; neither shall the ezor of their loins be loosed, nor the thong of their sandals be broken;

28

אֲשֶׁ֤ר SDBH - חִצָּיו֙ SDBH Their arrows שְׁנוּנִ֔ים SDBH are sharpened וְכָל־ and all קַשְּׁתֹתָ֖יו SDBH their bows דְּרֻכ֑וֹת SDBH are strung פַּרְס֤וֹת SDBH The hooves סוּסָיו֙ SDBH of their horses כַּצַּ֣ר SDBH are like flint נֶחְשָׁ֔בוּ SDBH . . . וְגַלְגִּלָּ֖יו SDBH their chariot wheels כַּסּוּפָֽה׃ SDBH [are] like a whirlwind

Whose khitzim (arrows) are sharp, and all their bows bent, the hoofs of their susim shall seem like flint, and their wheels like a whirlwind:

29

שְׁאָגָ֥ה SDBH Their roaring ל֖וֹ - כַּלָּבִ֑יא SDBH is like that of a lion וְשָׁאַג SDBH they roar כַּכְּפִירִ֤ים SDBH like young lions וְיִנְהֹם֙ SDBH They growl וְיֹאחֵ֣ז SDBH and seize טֶ֔רֶף SDBH their prey וְיַפְלִ֖יט SDBH they carry it away וְאֵ֥ין SDBH and no one מַצִּֽיל׃ SDBH can rescue it

Their roaring shall be like a lion, they shall roar like young lions; yea, they shall roar, and lay hold of the teref, and shall carry it away safe, and none shall deliver it.

30

וְיִנְהֹ֥ם SDBH they will roar עָלָ֛יו over it בַּיּ֥וֹם SDBH day הַה֖וּא SDBH In that כְּנַהֲמַת־ SDBH like the roaring יָ֑ם SDBH of the sea וְנִבַּ֤ט SDBH If one looks לָאָ֙רֶץ֙ SDBH over the land וְהִנֵּה־ he will see חֹ֔שֶׁךְ SDBH darkness צַ֣ר SDBH and distress וָא֔וֹר SDBH even the light חָשַׁ֖ךְ SDBH will be obscured בַּעֲרִיפֶֽיהָ׃פ SDBH by clouds

And in Yom Hahu they shall roar against them like the roaring of the sea; and if one look unto ha'aretz, hinei, choshech and tzar (distress), and the ohr groweth dark with clouds.
