הֲלֹֽא־ SDBH Does not חָכְמָ֥ה SDBH wisdom תִקְרָ֑א SDBH call out וּ֝תְבוּנָ֗ה SDBH and understanding תִּתֵּ֥ן raise קוֹלָֽהּ׃ SDBH her voice

Doth not Chochmah cry out? And Tevunah (understanding) put forth her voice?

בְּרֹאשׁ־ SDBH On the heights מְרוֹמִ֥ים SDBH . . . עֲלֵי־ overlooking דָ֑רֶךְ SDBH the road בֵּ֖ית SDBH at the crossroads נְתִיב֣וֹת SDBH . . . נִצָּֽבָה׃ SDBH she takes her stand

In the top of high hills, beside the derech (road) in the bais netivot (meeting place of trodden paths, crossroads) nitzavah (she [LADY WISDOM, THE LADY STREET PREACHER] stands).

לְיַד־ SDBH Beside שְׁעָרִ֥ים SDBH the gates לְפִי־ SDBH to קָ֑רֶת SDBH the city מְב֖וֹא SDBH at the entrances פְתָחִ֣ים SDBH . . . תָּרֹֽנָּה׃ SDBH she cries out

She crieth out at the she'arim (gates), at the entry of the city, at the entrance at the petachim (doorways):

אֲלֵיכֶ֣ם To you אִישִׁ֣ים SDBH O men אֶקְרָ֑א SDBH I call out וְ֝קוֹלִ֗י SDBH and my cry אֶל־ is to בְּנֵ֥י SDBH the sons אָדָֽם׃ SDBH of men

Unto you, O ishim, I call out; and my voice is to the Bnei Adam.

הָבִ֣ינוּ SDBH learn פְתָאיִ֣ם SDBH O simple ones עָרְמָ֑ה SDBH to be shrewd וּ֝כְסִילִ֗ים SDBH O fools הָבִ֥ינוּ SDBH gain understanding לֵֽב׃ SDBH . . .

O ye simple ones, understand armah (prudence); and, ye kesilim, understand in your lev.

שִׁ֭מְעוּ SDBH Listen כִּֽי־ for נְגִידִ֣ים SDBH of noble things אֲדַבֵּ֑ר SDBH I speak וּמִפְתַּ֥ח SDBH and the opening שְׂ֝פָתַ֗י SDBH of my lips מֵישָׁרִֽים׃ SDBH [will reveal] right

Hear; for I will speak negidim (noble things, worthy [words]); and the opening of my sfatayim (lips) shall be meisharim (upright, fair things).

כִּֽי־ For אֱ֭מֶת SDBH the truth יֶהְגֶּ֣ה SDBH will speak חִכִּ֑י SDBH my mouth וְתוֹעֲבַ֖ת SDBH is detestable שְׂפָתַ֣י SDBH to my lips רֶֽשַׁע׃ SDBH and wickedness

For my mouth shall speak emes; and resha is an abomination to my sfatayim (lips).

בְּצֶ֥דֶק SDBH are righteous כָּל־ All אִמְרֵי־ SDBH the words פִ֑י SDBH of my mouth אֵ֥ין SDBH none בָּ֝הֶ֗ם נִפְתָּ֥ל SDBH are crooked וְעִקֵּֽשׁ׃ SDBH or perverse

All the words of my peh (mouth) are in tzedek; there is nothing crooked or perverse in them.

כֻּלָּ֣ם They [are] נְ֭כֹחִים SDBH all plain לַמֵּבִ֑ין SDBH to the discerning וִֽ֝ישָׁרִ֗ים SDBH and upright לְמֹ֣צְאֵי SDBH to those who find דָֽעַת׃ SDBH knowledge

They are all correct to him that discerneth, and yesharim (straight ones) to them that find da'as (knowledge).

קְחֽוּ־ SDBH Receive מוּסָרִ֥י SDBH my instruction וְאַל־ instead of כָּ֑סֶף SDBH silver וְ֝דַ֗עַת SDBH and knowledge מֵחָר֥וּץ SDBH gold נִבְחָֽר׃ SDBH rather than pure

Receive my musar, and not kesef; and da'as (knowledge) rather than choice gold.

כִּֽי־ For טוֹבָ֣ה SDBH is more precious חָ֭כְמָה SDBH wisdom מִפְּנִינִ֑ים SDBH than rubies וְכָל־ and nothing חֲ֝פָצִ֗ים SDBH you desire לֹ֣א SDBH . . . יִֽשְׁווּ־ SDBH compares בָֽהּ׃ with her

For chochmah is tovah (better, more precious) than pearls; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it.

אֲ‍ֽנִי־ SDBH I חָ֭כְמָה SDBH wisdom שָׁכַ֣נְתִּי SDBH dwell together עָרְמָ֑ה SDBH with prudence וְדַ֖עַת SDBH knowledge מְזִמּ֣וֹת SDBH and discretion אֶמְצָֽא׃ SDBH and I find

I, Chochmah, dwell with armah (prudence), and find out da'as (knowledge) of mezimot (discretions).

יִֽרְאַ֣ת SDBH To fear יְהוָה֮ SDBH Hashem/Adonoi שְֽׂנֹ֫את SDBH is to hate רָ֥ע SDBH evil גֵּ֘אָ֤ה SDBH pride וְגָא֨וֹן׀ SDBH arrogant וְדֶ֣רֶךְ SDBH conduct רָ֭ע SDBH evil וּפִ֨י SDBH speech תַהְפֻּכ֬וֹת SDBH and perverse שָׂנֵֽאתִי׃ SDBH I hate

The Yirat Hashem is to hate rah; pride, and ga'on (arrogance), and the derech rah, and the perverse peh (mouth), do I hate.

לִֽי־ are mine עֵ֭צָה SDBH Counsel וְתוּשִׁיָּ֑ה SDBH and sound judgment אֲנִ֥י SDBH I בִ֝ינָ֗ה SDBH have insight לִ֣י גְבוּרָֽה׃ SDBH and strength

Etzah (counsel, advice) is mine, and sound judgment; I am binah; I have gevurah.

15

בִּ֭י By me מְלָכִ֣ים SDBH kings יִמְלֹ֑כוּ SDBH reign וְ֝רוֹזְנִ֗ים SDBH and rulers יְחֹ֣קְקוּ SDBH laws צֶֽדֶק׃ SDBH enact just

By me melachim reign, and nobles decree tzedek.

16

בִּ֭י By me שָׂרִ֣ים SDBH princes יָשֹׂ֑רוּ SDBH rule וּ֝נְדִיבִ֗ים SDBH nobles כָּל־ and all שֹׁ֥פְטֵי SDBH who govern צֶֽדֶק׃ SDBH justly

By me sarim (princes) rule, and nobles, even all the shofetim of tzedek.

17

אֲ֭נִי SDBH I אֹהֲבֶיהָ SDBH love אֵהָ֑ב SDBH those who love me וּ֝מְשַׁחֲרַ֗י SDBH and those who seek me early יִמְצָאֻֽנְנִי׃ SDBH shall find me

I love them that have ahavah for me; and those that seek me shall find me.

18

עֹֽשֶׁר־ SDBH are riches וְכָב֥וֹד SDBH and honor אִתִּ֑י SDBH With me ה֥וֹן SDBH wealth עָ֝תֵ֗ק SDBH enduring וּצְדָקָֽה׃ SDBH and righteousness

Osher and kavod are with me; indeed, enduring hon (wealth) and tzedakah.

19

ט֣וֹב SDBH is better פִּ֭רְיִי SDBH My fruit מֵחָר֣וּץ SDBH than gold וּמִפָּ֑ז SDBH pure gold וּ֝תְבוּאָתִ֗י SDBH and my harvest מִכֶּ֥סֶף SDBH silver נִבְחָֽר׃ SDBH [surpasses] choice

My p'ri is better than gold, indeed, than fine gold; and my revenue than choice kesef.

20

בְּאֹֽרַח־ SDBH in the way צְדָקָ֥ה SDBH of righteousness אֲהַלֵּ֑ך SDBH I walk בְּ֝ת֗וֹךְ SDBH along נְתִיב֥וֹת SDBH the paths מִשְׁפָּֽט׃ SDBH of justice

I walk in the orach tzedakah (way of righteousness), in the midst of the netivot (paths) of mishpat,

21

לְהַנְחִ֖יל SDBH bestowing אֹהֲבַ֥י׀ SDBH on those who love me יֵ֑שׁ wealth וְאֹצְרֹ֖תֵיהֶ֣ם SDBH their treasuries {full} אֲמַלֵּֽא׃פ SDBH and making

That I may cause those that love me to inherit substance; and I will fill their otzarot.

22

יְֽהוָ֗ה SDBH Hashem/Adonoi קָ֭נָנִי SDBH possessed me רֵאשִׁ֣ית SDBH as His first דַּרְכּ֑וֹ SDBH course קֶ֖דֶם SDBH before מִפְעָלָ֣יו SDBH His works מֵאָֽז׃ SDBH of old

Hashem possessed me in the reshit of His derech, before His works of old.

23

מֵ֭עוֹלָם SDBH From everlasting נִסַּ֥כְתִּי SDBH I was established מֵרֹ֗אשׁ SDBH from the beginning מִקַּדְמֵי־ SDBH began אָֽרֶץ׃ SDBH before the earth

I was set up [to reign] me'olam (from eternity), from the beginning, or ever eretz was.

24

בְּאֵין־ SDBH When there were no תְּהֹמ֥וֹת SDBH watery depths חוֹלָ֑לְתִּי SDBH I was brought forth בְּאֵ֥ין SDBH when no מַ֝עְיָנ֗וֹת SDBH springs נִכְבַּדֵּי־ SDBH were overflowing מָֽיִם׃ SDBH with water

When there were no tehomot, I was brought forth; when there were no springs abounding with mayim.

25

בְּטֶ֣רֶם SDBH Before הָרִ֣ים SDBH the mountains הָטְבָּ֑עוּ SDBH were settled לִפְנֵ֖י before גְבָע֣וֹת SDBH the hills חוֹלָֽלְתִּי׃ SDBH I was brought forth

Before the harim were settled, before the geva'ot (hills) was I brought forth;

26

עַד־ SDBH before לֹ֣א SDBH . . . עָ֭שָׂה SDBH He made אֶ֣רֶץ SDBH the land וְחוּצ֑וֹת SDBH or fields וְ֝רֹ֗אשׁ SDBH or any עָפְר֥וֹת SDBH of the dust תֵּבֵֽל׃ SDBH of the earth

While as yet He had not made eretz, nor the outer places, nor the beginning of the dust of the tevel.

27

בַּהֲכִינ֣וֹ SDBH when He established שָׁ֭מַיִם SDBH the heavens שָׁ֣ם SDBH was there אָ֑נִי SDBH I בְּח֥וּקוֹ SDBH when He inscribed ח֝֗וּג SDBH a circle עַל־ on פְּנֵ֥י the face תְהֽוֹם׃ SDBH of the deep

When He set in place Shomayim, I was there; when He drew a khoog (circle, horizon) upon the face of the tehom,

28

בְּאַמְּצ֣וֹ SDBH when He established שְׁחָקִ֣ים SDBH the clouds מִמָּ֑עַל SDBH above בַּ֝עֲז֗וֹז SDBH gushed forth עִינ֥וֹת SDBH when the fountains תְּהוֹם׃ SDBH of the deep

When He established the clouds above, when He strengthened the fountains of the tehom,

29

בְּשׂ֘וּמ֤וֹ SDBH when He set לַיָּ֨ם׀ SDBH for the sea חֻקּ֗וֹ SDBH a boundary וּ֭מַיִם SDBH so that the waters לֹ֣א SDBH would not יַֽעַבְרוּ־ SDBH surpass פִ֑יו SDBH His command בְּ֝חוּק֗וֹ SDBH when He marked out מ֣וֹסְדֵי SDBH the foundations אָֽרֶץ׃ SDBH of the earth

When He gave to the yam His chok (decree, limits), that the mayim should not pass its limits, when He appointed the foundations of the Eretz;

30

וָֽאֶהְיֶ֥ה Then I was אֶצְל֗וֹ SDBH at His side אָ֫מ֥וֹן SDBH a skilled craftsman וָֽאֶהְיֶ֣ה and שַׁ֭עֲשֻׁעִים SDBH His delight י֤וֹם׀ SDBH day י֑וֹם SDBH [by] day מְשַׂחֶ֖קֶת SDBH rejoicing לְפָנָ֣יו in His presence בְּכָל־ always עֵֽת׃ SDBH . . .

Then I was etzel (at the side of, beside [see Yn 1:1]) Him, as an Amon (master craftsman, builder, architect, artist); and I was daily His delight, rejoicing always before Him;

31

מְ֭שַׂחֶקֶת SDBH I was rejoicing בְּתֵבֵ֣ל SDBH in His whole world אַרְצ֑וֹ SDBH . . . וְ֝שַׁעֲשֻׁעַ֗י SDBH delighting אֶת־ SDBH together בְּנֵ֥י SDBH in the sons אָדָֽם׃פ SDBH of men

Rejoicing in the tevel of His Eretz; and my delights were with the Bnei Adam.

32

וְעַתָּ֣ה SDBH Now therefore בָ֭נִים SDBH my sons שִׁמְעוּ־ SDBH listen לִ֑י to me וְ֝אַשְׁרֵ֗י SDBH for blessed דְּרָכַ֥י SDBH my ways יִשְׁמֹֽרוּ׃ SDBH are those who keep

Now therefore pay heed unto me, O ye banim; for ashrei (blessed, happy) are they that are shomer over my drakhim.

33

שִׁמְע֖וּ SDBH Listen מוּסָ֥ר SDBH to instruction וַחֲכָ֗מוּ SDBH and be wise וְאַל־ do not תִּפְרָֽעוּ׃ SDBH ignore it

Hear musar, and be chacham, and disdain it not.

34

אַ֥שְֽׁרֵי SDBH Blessed אָדָם֮ SDBH is the man שֹׁמֵ֪עַֽ֫ SDBH who listens לִ֥י to me לִשְׁקֹ֣ד SDBH watching עַל־ at דַּ֭לְתֹתַי SDBH my doors י֤וֹם׀ SDBH daily י֑וֹם SDBH . . . לִ֝שְׁמֹ֗ר SDBH waiting מְזוּזֹ֥ת SDBH at the posts פְּתָחָֽי׃ SDBH of my doorway

Ashrei is adam that heareth me, watching daily at my dalatot, waiting at the mezuzot of my doors.

35

כִּ֣י For מֹ֭צְאִי SDBH whoever finds me מֹצְאֵי SDBH finds חַיִּ֑ים SDBH life וַיָּ֥פֶק SDBH and obtains רָ֝צ֗וֹן SDBH the favor מֵיְהוָֽה׃ SDBH Hashem/Adonoi

For whosoever findeth me findeth Chayyim, and shall obtain ratzon Hashem.

36

וְֽ֭חֹטְאִי SDBH But he who fails to find me חֹמֵ֣ס SDBH harms נַפְשׁ֑וֹ SDBH himself כָּל־ all מְ֝שַׂנְאַ֗י SDBH who hate me אָ֣הֲבוּ SDBH love מָֽוֶת׃פ SDBH death

But he that sinneth against me doth chamas against his own nefesh; all they that hate me love mavet.
