Mishle 5 — Hebrew–OJB Interlinear

בְּ֭נִי SDBH My son לְחָכְמָתִ֣י SDBH to my wisdom הַקְשִׁ֑יבָה SDBH pay attention לִ֝תְבוּנָתִ֗י SDBH to my insight הַט־ SDBH incline אָזְנֶֽךָ׃ SDBH your ear

Beni (my son), attend unto my chochmah, and bow thine ozen to my tevunah (understanding);

לִשְׁמֹ֥ר SDBH that you may maintain מְזִמּ֑וֹת SDBH discretion וְ֝דַ֗עַת SDBH knowledge שְׂפָתֶ֥יךָ SDBH and your lips יִנְצֹֽרוּ׃ SDBH may preserve

That thou mayest regard mezimah (discretion), and that thy sfatayim (lips) may keep da'as (knowledge).

כִּ֤י Though נֹ֣פֶת SDBH honey תִּ֭טֹּפְנָה SDBH drip שִׂפְתֵ֣י SDBH the lips זָרָ֑ה SDBH of the forbidden woman וְחָלָ֖ק SDBH [is] smoother מִשֶּׁ֣מֶן SDBH than oil חִכָּֽהּ׃ SDBH and her speech

For the sfatayim (lips) of a zarah (strange woman) drip as a honeycomb, and her mouth is smoother than shemen (olive oil);

וְֽ֭אַחֲרִיתָהּ SDBH in the end מָרָ֣ה SDBH she is bitter כַֽלַּעֲנָ֑ה SDBH as wormwood חַ֝דָּ֗ה SDBH sharp כְּחֶ֣רֶב SDBH sword פִּיּֽוֹת׃ SDBH as a double-edged

But her end is marah (bitter) as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged cherev.

רַ֭גְלֶיהָ SDBH Her feet יֹרְד֣וֹת SDBH go down מָ֑וֶת SDBH to death שְׁ֝א֗וֹל SDBH Sheol צְעָדֶ֥יהָ SDBH her steps יִתְמֹֽכוּ׃ SDBH lead straight to

Her raglayim go down to mavet; her steps lead to Sheol.

אֹ֣רַח SDBH the path חַ֭יִּים SDBH of life פֶּן־ She does not תְּפַלֵּ֑ס SDBH consider נָע֥וּ SDBH are unstable מַ֝עְגְּלֹתֶ֗יהָ SDBH her ways לֹ֣א SDBH she does not תֵדָֽע׃פ SDBH know that

Lest thou shouldest compare [hers] to the orach chayyim, her ma'agalot (paths) are crooked, that thou canst not know them.

וְעַתָּ֣ה SDBH So now בָ֭נִים SDBH my sons שִׁמְעוּ־ SDBH listen לִ֑י to me וְאַל־ and do not תָּ֝ס֗וּרוּ SDBH turn aside מֵאִמְרֵי־ SDBH from the words פִֽי׃ SDBH of my mouth

Hear me now therefore, O ye banim, and turn not from the words of my peh (mouth).

הַרְחֵ֣ק SDBH far מֵעָלֶ֣יהָ from her דַרְכֶּ֑ךָ SDBH Keep your path וְאַל־ do not תִּ֝קְרַ֗ב SDBH go near אֶל־ . . . פֶּ֥תַח SDBH the door בֵּיתָֽהּ׃ SDBH of her house

Remove thy derech far from her, and come not near the petach (doorway) of her bais;

פֶּן־ lest תִּתֵּ֣ן you concede לַאֲחֵרִ֣ים SDBH to others הוֹדֶ֑ךָ SDBH your vigor וּ֝שְׁנֹתֶ֗יךָ SDBH and your years לְאַכְזָרִֽי׃ SDBH to one who is cruel

Lest thou give thine hod (strength) unto others, and thy shanim unto the cruel one;

פֶּֽן־ lest יִשְׂבְּע֣וּ SDBH feast זָרִ֣ים SDBH strangers כֹּחֶ֑ךָ SDBH on your wealth וַ֝עֲצָבֶ֗יךָ SDBH and your labors בְּבֵ֣ית SDBH [enrich] the house נָכְרִֽי׃ SDBH of a foreigner

Lest zarim (strangers) be filled with thy koach; and thy toilings be in the bais nochri;

וְנָהַמְתָּ֥ SDBH you will groan בְאַחֲרִיתֶ֑ךָ SDBH At the end of your life בִּכְל֥וֹת SDBH are spent בְּ֝שָׂרְךָ֗ SDBH when your flesh וּשְׁאֵרֶֽךָ׃ SDBH and your body

And thou mourn at the acharit (last, latter end, future), when thy basar and thy body are consumed,

וְֽאָמַרְתָּ֗ SDBH and you will say אֵ֭יךְ SDBH How שָׂנֵ֣אתִי SDBH I hated מוּסָ֑ר SDBH discipline וְ֝תוֹכַ֗חַת SDBH reproof נָאַ֥ץ SDBH despised לִבִּֽי׃ SDBH and my heart

And say, How have I hated musar, and my lev spurned tokhakhat (reproof);

וְֽלֹא־ SDBH I did not שָׁ֭מַעְתִּי SDBH listen בְּק֣וֹל SDBH to the voice מוֹרָ֑י SDBH of my teachers וְ֝לִֽמְלַמְּדַ֗י SDBH to my mentors לֹא־ SDBH [or] הִטִּ֥יתִי SDBH incline אָזְנִֽי׃ SDBH my ear

And have not obeyed the voice of my morim (teachers), nor inclined mine ear to the ones who were my melamed!

כִּ֭מְעַט SDBH on the brink הָיִ֣יתִי I am בְכָל־ of utter רָ֑ע SDBH ruin בְּת֖וֹךְ SDBH in the midst קָהָ֣ל SDBH of the whole assembly וְעֵדָֽה׃ SDBH . . .

I was at the brink of all rah (evil, ruin) in the midst of the kahal (congregation) and edah (assembly).

15

שְׁתֵה־ SDBH Drink מַ֥יִם SDBH water מִבּוֹרֶ֑ךָ SDBH from your own cistern וְ֝נֹזְלִ֗ים SDBH and running water מִתּ֥וֹךְ SDBH from בְּאֵרֶֽךָ׃ SDBH your own well

Drink mayim out of thine own bor (cistern), and running waters out of thine own well.

16

יָפ֣וּצוּ SDBH flow מַעְיְנֹתֶ֣יךָ SDBH Why should your springs ח֑וּצָה SDBH in the streets בָּ֝רְחֹב֗וֹת SDBH in the public squares פַּלְגֵי־ SDBH your streams מָֽיִם׃ SDBH of water

Should thy fountains be dispersed abroad, and channels of mayim in the rekhovot (town squares)?

17

יִֽהְיוּ־ Let them be לְךָ֥ yours לְבַדֶּ֑ךָ SDBH alone וְאֵ֖ין SDBH never לְזָרִ֣ים SDBH with strangers אִתָּֽךְ׃ SDBH to be shared

Let them be only thine own, and never zarim (strangers) with thee.

18

יְהִֽי־ be מְקוֹרְךָ֥ SDBH May your fountain בָר֑וּךְ SDBH blessed וּ֝שְׂמַ֗ח SDBH and may you rejoice מֵאֵ֥שֶׁת SDBH in the wife נְעוּרֶֽךָ׃ SDBH of your youth

Let thy makor (fountain) be blessed; and rejoice with the isha of thy youth.

19

אַיֶּ֥לֶת SDBH doe אֲהָבִ֗ים SDBH A loving וְֽיַעֲלַ֫ת־ SDBH fawn חֵ֥ן SDBH a graceful דַּ֭דֶּיהָ SDBH may her breasts יְרַוֻּ֣ךָ SDBH satisfy you בְכָל־ always עֵ֑ת SDBH . . . בְּ֝אַהֲבָתָ֗הּ SDBH by her love תִּשְׁגֶּ֥ה SDBH may you be captivated תָמִֽיד׃ SDBH forever

Let her be as the loving deer and graceful doe; let her breasts satisfy thee at all times; and be thou enraptured tamid (ever) with ahavat (love of) her.

20

וְלָ֤מָּה SDBH Why תִשְׁגֶּ֣ה SDBH be captivated בְנִ֣י SDBH my son בְזָרָ֑ה SDBH by an adulteress וּ֝תְחַבֵּ֗ק SDBH or embrace חֵ֣ק SDBH the bosom נָכְרִיָּֽה׃ SDBH of a stranger

And why wilt thou, beni (my son), be intoxicated with a zarah (strange woman), and embrace the kheyk (bosom) of a nochriyah (foreign [heathen] woman)?

21

כִּ֤י For נֹ֨כַח׀ SDBH are before עֵינֵ֣י SDBH the eyes יְ֭הוָה SDBH Hashem/Adonoi דַּרְכֵי־ SDBH ways אִ֑ישׁ SDBH a man’s וְֽכָל־ all מַעְגְּלֹתָ֥יו SDBH his paths מְפַלֵּֽס׃ SDBH and [the LORD] examines

For the drakhim ish are before the eyes of Hashem, and He pondereth all his ma'agalot (paths).

22

עַֽווֹנוֹתָ֗יו SDBH The iniquities יִלְכְּדֻנ֥וֹ SDBH entrap him אֶת־ SDBH - הָרָשָׁ֑ע SDBH of a wicked man וּבְחַבְלֵ֥י SDBH entangle him חַ֝טָּאת֗וֹ SDBH of his sin יִתָּמֵֽךְ׃ SDBH the cords

His own avonot shall entrap the rashah himself, and he shall be held fast by the cords of his chattat.

23

ה֗וּא SDBH He יָ֭מוּת SDBH dies בְּאֵ֣ין SDBH for lack מוּסָ֑ר SDBH of discipline וּבְרֹ֖ב by his own great אִוַּלְתּ֣וֹ SDBH folly יִשְׁגֶּֽה׃פ SDBH led astray

He shall die without musar; and in the greatness of his folly he shall be led astray.
