Mishle 29 — Hebrew–OJB Interlinear

1

אִ֣ישׁ SDBH A man who תּ֭וֹכָחוֹת SDBH after much reproof מַקְשֶׁה־ SDBH remains stiff-necked עֹ֑רֶף SDBH . . . פֶּ֥תַע SDBH will suddenly יִ֝שָּׁבֵ֗ר SDBH be shattered וְאֵ֣ין SDBH - מַרְפֵּֽא׃ SDBH beyond recovery

He, that being often reproved, stiffeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without marpeh (remedy).

בִּרְב֣וֹת flourish צַ֭דִּיקִים SDBH When the righteous יִשְׂמַ֣ח SDBH rejoice הָעָ֑ם SDBH the people וּבִמְשֹׁ֥ל SDBH rule רָ֝שָׁ֗ע SDBH but when the wicked יֵאָ֥נַֽח SDBH groan עָֽם׃ SDBH the people

When the tzaddikim are increased, the people rejoice, but when the rasha beareth rule, the people groan.

אִֽישׁ־ SDBH A man אֹהֵ֣ב SDBH who loves חָ֭כְמָה SDBH wisdom יְשַׂמַּ֣ח SDBH brings joy אָבִ֑יו SDBH to his father וְרֹעֶ֥ה SDBH but a companion ז֝וֹנ֗וֹת SDBH of prostitutes יְאַבֶּד־ SDBH squanders הֽוֹן׃ SDBH his wealth

He who loveth chochmah rejoiceth aviv, but he that keepeth company with zonot squanders his hon (substance, wealth).

מֶ֗לֶךְ SDBH a king בְּ֭מִשְׁפָּט SDBH By justice יַעֲמִ֣יד SDBH brings stability אָ֑רֶץ SDBH to the land וְאִ֖ישׁ SDBH but a man תְּרוּמ֣וֹת SDBH who exacts tribute יֶֽהֶרְסֶֽנָּה׃ SDBH demolishes it

Melech by mishpat establisheth eretz, but an ish terumot (a man of bribes) bringeth it down.

גֶּ֭בֶר SDBH A man מַחֲלִ֣יק SDBH who flatters עַל־ for רֵעֵ֑הוּ SDBH his neighbor רֶ֝֗שֶׁת SDBH a net פּוֹרֵ֥שׂ SDBH spreads עַל־ . . . פְּעָמָֽיו׃ SDBH his feet

A gever that flattereth his neighbor spreadeth a reshet (net) for his feet.

בְּפֶ֤שַֽׁע SDBH by his own sin אִ֣ישׁ SDBH man רָ֣ע SDBH An evil מוֹקֵ֑שׁ SDBH is caught וְ֝צַדִּ֗יק SDBH but a righteous one יָר֥וּן SDBH sings וְשָׂמֵֽחַ׃ SDBH and rejoices

By peysha (transgression) an ish rah is snared, but the tzaddik doth sing and have simchah.

יֹדֵ֣עַ SDBH consider צַ֭דִּיק SDBH The righteous דִּ֣ין SDBH the cause דַּלִּ֑ים SDBH of the poor רָ֝שָׁ֗ע SDBH but the wicked לֹא־ SDBH have no יָבִ֥ין SDBH regard דָּֽעַת׃ SDBH for such concerns

The tzaddik considereth the cause of the dalim, but the rasha (wicked) doeth not understand such da'as (knowledge).

אַנְשֵׁ֣י SDBH Mockers לָ֭צוֹן SDBH . . . יָפִ֣יחוּ SDBH inflame קִרְיָ֑ה SDBH a city וַ֝חֲכָמִ֗ים SDBH but the wise יָשִׁ֥יבוּ SDBH turn away אָֽף׃ SDBH anger

Scornful men enflame a city, but chachamim turn away af (wrath).

אִֽישׁ־ SDBH man חָכָ֗ם SDBH If a wise נִ֭שְׁפָּט SDBH goes to court אֶת־ SDBH with אִ֣ישׁ SDBH . . . אֱוִ֑יל SDBH a fool וְרָגַ֥ז SDBH there will be raving וְ֝שָׂחַ֗ק SDBH and laughing וְאֵ֣ין SDBH with no נָֽחַת׃ SDBH resolution

If an ish chacham has to contend with a fool, he [the fool] rageth or laugheth, and hath no rest.

אַנְשֵׁ֣י SDBH Men דָ֭מִים SDBH of bloodshed יִשְׂנְאוּ־ SDBH hate תָ֑ם SDBH a blameless man וִֽ֝ישָׁרִ֗ים SDBH but the upright יְבַקְשׁ֥וּ SDBH care for נַפְשֽׁוֹ׃ SDBH his life

The anshei damim hate integrity, but the yesharim seek his nefesh (soul, i.e., his soul's well-being).

כָּל־ all ר֭וּחוֹ SDBH his anger יוֹצִ֣יא SDBH vents כְסִ֑יל SDBH A fool וְ֝חָכָ֗ם SDBH but a wise man בְּאָח֥וֹר SDBH it back יְשַׁבְּחֶֽנָּה׃ SDBH holds

A kesil (fool) uttereth all his wrath, but a chacham keepeth it back quietly.

מֹ֭שֵׁל SDBH If a ruler מַקְשִׁ֣יב SDBH listens עַל־ to דְּבַר־ SDBH lies שָׁ֑קֶר SDBH . . . כָּֽל־ all מְשָׁרְתָ֥יו SDBH his officials רְשָׁעִֽים׃ SDBH will be wicked

If a moshel pays heed to davar sheker, all his mesharetim (officials, ministers) are resha'im.

רָ֤שׁ SDBH The poor man וְאִ֣ישׁ SDBH and the oppressor תְּכָכִ֣ים SDBH . . . נִפְגָּ֑שׁוּ SDBH have this in common מֵ֤אִיר־ SDBH gives light עֵינֵ֖י SDBH to the eyes שְׁנֵיהֶ֣ם SDBH of both יְהוָֽה׃ SDBH Hashem/Adonoi

The rahsh (pauper) and the oppressor have this in common: Hashem enlighteneth both their eynayim.

מֶ֤לֶךְ SDBH A king שׁוֹפֵ֣ט SDBH who judges בֶּֽאֱמֶ֣ת SDBH with fairness דַּלִּ֑ים SDBH the poor כִּ֝סְא֗וֹ SDBH his throne לָעַ֥ד SDBH forever יִכּֽוֹן׃ SDBH will be established

If Melech shofet be'emes (judges in truth) the dalim, his kisse shall be established forever.

שֵׁ֣בֶט SDBH A rod וְ֭תוֹכַחַת SDBH of correction יִתֵּ֣ן imparts חָכְמָ֑ה SDBH wisdom וְנַ֥עַר SDBH but a child מְ֝שֻׁלָּ֗ח SDBH left to himself מֵבִ֥ישׁ SDBH disgraces אִמּֽוֹ׃ SDBH his mother

The shevet (rod) and tokhakhat (reproof) give chochmah, but a na'ar (child) left to himself bringeth immo to shame.

16

בִּרְב֣וֹת thrive רְ֭שָׁעִים SDBH When the wicked יִרְבֶּה־ increases פָּ֑שַׁע SDBH rebellion וְ֝צַדִּיקִ֗ים SDBH but the righteous בְּֽמַפַּלְתָּ֥ם SDBH their downfall יִרְאֽוּ׃ SDBH will see

When the resha'im are multiplied, peysha (transgression) increaseth, but the tzaddikim shall see their downfall.

17

יַסֵּ֣ר SDBH Discipline בִּ֭נְךָ SDBH your son וִֽינִיחֶ֑ךָ SDBH and he will give you rest וְיִתֵּ֖ן he will bring מַעֲדַנִּ֣ים SDBH delight לְנַפְשֶֽׁךָ׃פ SDBH to your soul

Correct binecha, and he shall give thee rest; indeed, he shall give delight unto thy nefesh.

18

בְּאֵ֣ין SDBH Where [there is] no חָ֭זוֹן SDBH vision יִפָּ֣רַֽע SDBH cast off restraint עָ֑ם SDBH the people וְשֹׁמֵ֖ר SDBH he who keeps תּוֹרָ֣ה SDBH the Law אַשְׁרֵֽהוּ׃ SDBH but blessed [is]

Where there is no chazon (prophetic vision), the people cast off restaint [I.E., PERISH UNGOVERNABLE], but he that is shomer over the torah, happy is he.

19

בִּ֭דְבָרִים SDBH by words [alone] לֹא־ SDBH cannot יִוָּ֣סֶר SDBH be corrected עָ֑בֶד SDBH A servant כִּֽי־ though יָ֝בִ֗ין SDBH he understands וְאֵ֣ין SDBH he will not מַעֲנֶֽה׃ SDBH respond

An eved will not be corrected by devarim, for though he understand he will not answer.

20

חָזִ֗יתָ SDBH Do you see אִ֭ישׁ SDBH a man אָ֣ץ SDBH in haste בִּדְבָרָ֑יו SDBH who speaks תִּקְוָ֖ה SDBH There is more hope לִכְסִ֣יל SDBH for a fool מִמֶּֽנּוּ׃ than for him

Seest thou an ish that is hasty in his devarim? There is more tikvah for a kesil (fool) than for him.

21

מְפַנֵּ֣ק SDBH pampered מִנֹּ֣עַר SDBH from his youth עַבְדּ֑וֹ SDBH A servant וְ֝אַחֲרִית֗וֹ SDBH in the end יִהְיֶ֥ה will bring מָנֽוֹן׃ SDBH grief

He that pampers his eved from youth up shall have him as his ben at the acharit (end).

22

אִֽישׁ־ SDBH man אַ֭ף SDBH An angry יְגָרֶ֣ה SDBH stirs up מָד֑וֹן SDBH dissension וּבַ֖עַל SDBH man חֵמָ֣ה SDBH and a hot-tempered רַב־ SDBH abounds פָּֽשַׁע׃ SDBH in transgression

An ish af (angry man) stirreth up strife, and a ba'al chemah (ill-tempered man) aboundeth in peysha (transgression).

23

גַּאֲוַ֣ת SDBH pride אָ֭דָם SDBH A man’s תַּשְׁפִּילֶ֑נּוּ SDBH will bring him low וּשְׁפַל־ SDBH but a humble ר֝֗וּחַ SDBH spirit יִתְמֹ֥ךְ SDBH will obtain כָּבֽוֹד׃ SDBH honor

Ga'avat adam (pride of man) shall bring him low, but the humble in ruach shall attain kavod.

24

חוֹלֵ֣ק SDBH A partner עִם־ to גַּ֭נָּב SDBH a thief שׂוֹנֵ֣א SDBH hates נַפְשׁ֑וֹ SDBH his own soul אָלָ֥ה SDBH the oath יִ֝שְׁמַ֗ע SDBH he receives וְלֹ֣א SDBH but does not יַגִּֽיד׃ SDBH testify

He who is partner with a ganav hateth his own nefesh; he heareth the curse of the victim but discloses nothing.

25

חֶרְדַּ֣ת SDBH The fear אָ֭דָם SDBH of man יִתֵּ֣ן is מוֹקֵ֑שׁ SDBH a snare וּבוֹטֵ֖חַ SDBH but whoever trusts בַּיהוָ֣ה SDBH Hashem/Adonoi יְשֻׂגָּֽב׃ SDBH is set securely on high

The fear of adam bringeth a mokesh (snare), but he who putteth his trust in Hashem shall be secure.

26

רַ֭בִּים SDBH Many מְבַקְשִׁ֣ים SDBH seek פְּנֵי־ favor מוֹשֵׁ֑ל SDBH the ruler’s וּ֝מֵיְהוָ֗ה SDBH Hashem/Adonoi מִשְׁפַּט־ SDBH receives justice אִֽישׁ׃ SDBH but a man

Many seek the moshel's favor, but mishpat ish cometh from Hashem.

27

תּוֹעֲבַ֣ת SDBH is detestable צַ֭דִּיקִים SDBH to the righteous אִ֣ישׁ SDBH man עָ֑וֶל SDBH An unjust וְתוֹעֲבַ֖ת SDBH is detestable רָשָׁ֣ע SDBH to the wicked יְשַׁר־ SDBH is upright דָּֽרֶךְ׃פ SDBH and one whose way

An unjust man is a to'evah to the tzaddikim, and he that is yeshar derech (upright in the way) is to'evah to the rasha.
