כַּשֶּׁ֤לֶג׀ SDBH Like snow בַּקַּ֗יִץ SDBH in summer וְכַמָּטָ֥ר SDBH and rain בַּקָּצִ֑יר SDBH at harvest כֵּ֤ן SDBH . . . לֹא־ SDBH does not נָאוֶ֖ה SDBH befit לִכְסִ֣יל SDBH a fool כָּבֽוֹד׃ SDBH honor

As sheleg (snow) in kayitz (summer), and as matar (rain) at katzir (harvest), so kavod is not fitting for a kesil (fool).

כַּצִּפּ֣וֹר SDBH sparrow לָ֭נוּד SDBH Like a fluttering כַּדְּר֣וֹר SDBH swallow לָע֑וּף SDBH or darting כֵּ֥ן SDBH . . . קִֽלְלַ֥ת SDBH curse חִ֝נָּ֗ם SDBH an undeserved לֹא SDBH does not תָבֹֽא׃ SDBH come to rest

As the tzippor in its fluttering, as the swallow in its flying, so the kelelah (curse) without cause shall not alight.

שׁ֣וֹט SDBH A whip לַ֭סּוּס SDBH for the horse מֶ֣תֶג SDBH a bridle לַחֲמ֑וֹר SDBH for the donkey וְ֝שֵׁ֗בֶט SDBH and a rod לְגֵ֣ו SDBH for the backs כְּסִילִֽים׃ SDBH of fools

A shot (whip) for the sus, a bridle for the chamor, and a shevet for the back of kesilim.

אַל־ Do not תַּ֣עַן SDBH answer כְּ֭סִיל SDBH a fool כְּאִוַּלְתּ֑וֹ SDBH according to his folly פֶּֽן־ or תִּשְׁוֶה־ SDBH will be like him לּ֥וֹ . . . גַם־ SDBH . . . אָֽתָּה׃ SDBH you yourself

Answer not a kesil (fool) according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him.

עֲנֵ֣ה SDBH Answer כְ֭סִיל SDBH a fool כְּאִוַּלְתּ֑וֹ SDBH according to his folly פֶּן־ lest יִהְיֶ֖ה he become חָכָ֣ם SDBH wise בְּעֵינָֽיו׃ SDBH in his own eyes

Answer a kesil (fool) according to his folly, lest he be chacham in his own eyes.

מְקַצֶּ֣ה SDBH Like cutting off רַ֭גְלַיִם SDBH one’s own feet חָמָ֣ס SDBH violence שֹׁתֶ֑ה SDBH or drinking שֹׁלֵ֖חַ SDBH is the sending דְּבָרִ֣ים SDBH of a message בְּיַד־ SDBH by the hand כְּסִֽיל׃ SDBH of a fool

He that sendeth a message by the yad of a kesil (fool) cutteth off the raglayim, and drinketh chamas.

דַּלְי֣וּ SDBH hanging limp שֹׁ֭קַיִם SDBH legs מִפִּסֵּ֑חַ SDBH Like lame וּ֝מָשָׁ֗ל SDBH is a proverb בְּפִ֣י SDBH in the mouth כְסִילִֽים׃ SDBH of a fool

The legs of the pisei'ach (lame man) hang limp; so is a mashal in the peh (mouth) of kesilim.

כִּצְר֣וֹר SDBH Like binding אֶ֭בֶן SDBH a stone בְּמַרְגֵּמָ֑ה SDBH into a sling כֵּן־ SDBH is נוֹתֵ֖ן the giving לִכְסִ֣יל SDBH to a fool כָּבֽוֹד׃ SDBH of honor

As he that bindeth an even (stone) in a sling, so is he that giveth kavod to a kesil (fool).

ח֭וֹחַ SDBH [Like] a thorn עָלָ֣ה SDBH [that] goes בְיַד־ SDBH into the hand שִׁכּ֑וֹר SDBH of a drunkard וּ֝מָשָׁ֗ל SDBH is a proverb בְּפִ֣י SDBH in the mouth כְסִילִֽים׃ SDBH of a fool

As a thornbush goeth up into the yad of a shikkor, so is a mashal in the peh (mouth) of kesilim.

רַ֥ב SDBH Like an archer מְחֽוֹלֵֽל־ SDBH who wounds כֹּ֑ל at random וְשֹׂכֵ֥ר SDBH is he who hires כְּ֝סִ֗יל SDBH a fool וְשֹׂכֵ֥ר SDBH or עֹבְרִֽים׃ SDBH passerby

Like an archer wounding all, so is he that hireth the kesil (fool), or hireth the passerby.

כְּ֭כֶלֶב SDBH As a dog שָׁ֣ב SDBH returns עַל־ to קֵא֑וֹ SDBH its vomit כְּ֝סִ֗יל SDBH so a fool שׁוֹנֶ֥ה SDBH repeats בְאִוַּלְתּֽוֹ׃ SDBH his folly

As a kelev returneth to his vomit, so a kesil (fool) returneth to his folly.

רָאִ֗יתָ SDBH Do you see אִ֭ישׁ SDBH a man חָכָ֣ם SDBH who is wise בְּעֵינָ֑יו SDBH in his own eyes תִּקְוָ֖ה SDBH There is more hope לִכְסִ֣יל SDBH for a fool מִמֶּֽנּוּ׃ than for him

Seest thou an ish chacham in his own eyes? There is more tikvah (hope) for a kesil (fool) than for him.

אָמַ֣ר SDBH says עָ֭צֵל SDBH The slacker שַׁ֣חַל SDBH A lion בַּדָּ֑רֶךְ SDBH [is] in the road אֲ֝רִ֗י SDBH A fierce lion בֵּ֣ין SDBH [roams] הָרְחֹבֽוֹת׃ SDBH the public square

The atzel (sluggard, lazy one) saith, There is a lion in the derech; an ari is in the rechovot.

14

הַ֭דֶּלֶת SDBH [As] a door תִּסּ֣וֹב SDBH turns עַל־ on צִירָ֑הּ SDBH its hinges וְ֝עָצֵ֗ל SDBH so the slacker עַל־ [turns] on מִטָּתֽוֹ׃ SDBH his bed

As the delet (door) turneth upon its hinges, so doth the atzel (sluggard, lazy one) upon his mittah (bed).

15

טָ֘מַ֤ן SDBH buries עָצֵ֣ל SDBH The slacker יָ֭דוֹ SDBH his hand בַּצַּלָּ֑חַת SDBH in the dish נִ֝לְאָ֗ה SDBH it wearies him לַֽהֲשִׁיבָ֥הּ SDBH to bring it back אֶל־ to פִּֽיו׃ SDBH his mouth

The atzel (sluggard, lazy one) hideth his yad in his dish; it's too tiring to bring it back to his peh (mouth) again.

16

חָכָ֣ם SDBH [is] wiser עָצֵ֣ל SDBH The slacker בְּעֵינָ֑יו SDBH in his own eyes מִ֝שִּׁבְעָ֗ה SDBH than seven men מְשִׁ֣יבֵי SDBH who answer טָֽעַם׃ SDBH discreetly

The atzel (sluggard, lazy one) is chacham in his own eyes, more than seven that give an excellent answer.

17

מַחֲזִ֥יק SDBH Like one who grabs בְּאָזְנֵי־ SDBH by the ears כָ֑לֶב SDBH a dog עֹבֵ֥ר SDBH is a passerby מִ֝תְעַבֵּ֗ר SDBH who meddles עַל־ in רִ֥יב SDBH a quarrel לֹּֽא־ SDBH not לֽוֹ׃ his own

He that passeth by, and meddleth in a quarrel that doth not belong to him, is like one that taketh a kelev by the oznayim.

18

כְּֽ֭מִתְלַהְלֵהַּ SDBH Like a madman הַיֹּרֶ֥ה SDBH shooting זִקִּ֗ים SDBH firebrands חִצִּ֥ים SDBH arrows וָמָֽוֶת׃ SDBH and deadly

As a mad man who shooteth firebrands, khitzim (arrows), and mavet,

כֵּֽן־ SDBH so אִ֭ישׁ SDBH is the man רִמָּ֣ה SDBH who deceives אֶת־ SDBH - רֵעֵ֑הוּ SDBH his neighbor וְ֝אָמַ֗ר SDBH and says הֲ‍ֽלֹא־ SDBH was only מְשַׂחֵ֥ק SDBH joking אָֽנִי׃ SDBH I

So is the ish that deceiveth his re'a, and saith, Am I not just having a laugh?

20

בְּאֶ֣פֶס SDBH Without עֵ֭צִים SDBH wood תִּכְבֶּה־ SDBH goes out אֵ֑שׁ SDBH a fire וּבְאֵ֥ין SDBH without נִ֝רְגָּ֗ן SDBH gossip יִשְׁתֹּ֥ק SDBH ceases מָדֽוֹן׃ SDBH a conflict

Where no wood is, there the eish goeth out; so where there is no nirgan (gossip, slanderer, talebearer), the strife dieth down.

21

פֶּחָ֣ם SDBH Like charcoal לְ֭גֶחָלִים SDBH for embers וְעֵצִ֣ים SDBH and wood לְאֵ֑שׁ SDBH for fire וְאִ֥ישׁ SDBH man מְדוֹנִים SDBH so is a quarrelsome לְחַרְחַר־ SDBH for kindling רִֽיב׃פ SDBH strife

As charcoal is to burning coals, and wood to eish; so is a contentious ish to kindle strife.

22

דִּבְרֵ֣י SDBH The words נִ֭רְגָּן SDBH of a gossip כְּמִֽתְלַהֲמִ֑ים SDBH are like choice morsels וְ֝הֵ֗ם SDBH that יָרְד֥וּ SDBH go down חַדְרֵי־ SDBH into the inmost being בָֽטֶן׃ SDBH . . .

The devarim of a nirgan (gossip, slanderer, talebearer) are like tasty morsels, and they go down into the innermost chambers of the beten.

23

כֶּ֣סֶף SDBH Like glaze סִ֭יגִים SDBH . . . מְצֻפֶּ֣ה SDBH covering עַל־ . . . חָ֑רֶשׂ SDBH an earthen vessel שְׂפָתַ֖יִם SDBH lips דֹּלְקִ֣ים SDBH are burning וְלֶב־ SDBH heart רָֽע׃ SDBH and a wicked

Fervent sfatayim (lips) and a lev rah are like earthenware covered with silver dross.

24

בִּשְׂפָתוֹ SDBH with his speech יִנָּכֵ֣ר SDBH disguises himself שׂוֹנֵ֑א SDBH A hateful man וּ֝בְקִרְבּ֗וֹ SDBH in his heart יָשִׁ֥ית SDBH but he lays up מִרְמָֽה׃ SDBH deceit

He that hateth disguises it with his sfatayim (lips), and within harboreth mirmah (deceit);

25

כִּֽי־ When יְחַנֵּ֣ן SDBH graciously ק֭וֹלוֹ SDBH he speaks אַל־ do not תַּֽאֲמֶן־ SDBH believe בּ֑וֹ him כִּ֤י for שֶׁ֖בַע SDBH seven תּוֹעֵב֣וֹת SDBH abominations בְּלִבּֽוֹ׃ SDBH [fill] his heart

When he speaketh fair, believe him not; for there are sheva to'avot in his lev.

26

תִּכַּסֶּ֣ה SDBH is concealed שִׂ֭נְאָה SDBH Though his hatred בְּמַשָּׁא֑וֹן SDBH by deception תִּגָּלֶ֖ה SDBH will be exposed רָעָת֣וֹ SDBH his wickedness בְקָהָֽל׃ SDBH in the assembly

Whose hatred is covered by guile, yet his wickedness shall be exposed before the whole kahal.

27

כֹּֽרֶה־ SDBH He who digs שַּׁ֭חַת SDBH a pit בָּ֣הּ into it יִפֹּ֑ל SDBH will fall וְגֹ֥לֵ֥ל SDBH and he who rolls אֶ֝בֶן SDBH a stone אֵלָ֥יו on him תָּשֽׁוּב׃ SDBH will have it roll back

He who diggeth a shachat (pit) shall fall therein, and he that rolleth an even (stone), it will roll back upon him.

28

לְֽשׁוֹן־ SDBH tongue שֶׁ֭קֶר SDBH A lying יִשְׂנָ֣א SDBH hates דַכָּ֑יו SDBH those it crushes וּפֶ֥ה SDBH mouth חָ֝לָ֗ק SDBH and a flattering יַעֲשֶׂ֥ה SDBH causes מִדְחֶֽה׃ SDBH ruin

A lashon sheker hateth those that are crushed by it; and a flattering peh (mouth) worketh ruin.
