Mishle 16 — Hebrew–OJB Interlinear

לְאָדָ֥ם SDBH belong to man מַֽעַרְכֵי־ SDBH The plans לֵ֑ב SDBH of the heart וּ֝מֵיְהוָ֗ה SDBH Hashem/Adonoi מַעֲנֵ֥ה SDBH but the reply לָשֽׁוֹן׃ SDBH of the tongue

The plans of the lev belong to adam, and the answer of the lashon is from Hashem.

2

כָּֽל־ All דַּרְכֵי־ SDBH ways אִ֭ישׁ SDBH a man’s זַ֣ךְ SDBH [are] pure בְּעֵינָ֑יו SDBH in his own eyes וְתֹכֵ֖ן SDBH are weighed out רוּח֣וֹת SDBH but his motives יְהוָֽה׃ SDBH Hashem/Adonoi

All the drakhei ish are pure in his own eynayim, but Hashem weigheth the ruchot.

גֹּ֣ל SDBH Commit אֶל־ to יְהוָ֣ה SDBH Hashem/Adonoi מַעֲשֶׂ֑יךָ SDBH your works וְ֝יִכֹּ֗נוּ SDBH will be achieved מַחְשְׁבֹתֶֽיךָ׃ SDBH and your plans

Commit thy ma'asim (works) unto Hashem, and thy plans shall be established.

כֹּ֤ל everything פָּעַ֣ל SDBH has made יְ֭הוָה SDBH Hashem/Adonoi לַֽמַּעֲנֵ֑הוּ SDBH for His purpose וְגַם־ SDBH even רָ֝שָׁ֗ע SDBH the wicked לְי֣וֹם SDBH for the day רָעָֽה׃ SDBH of disaster

Hashem works out all things for Himself, indeed, even the rasha (wicked) for the Yom Ra'ah (day of evil).

תּוֹעֲבַ֣ת SDBH is detestable יְ֭הוָה SDBH Hashem/Adonoi כָּל־ Everyone גְּבַהּ־ SDBH [who is] proud לֵ֑ב SDBH in heart יָ֥ד SDBH be assured that לְ֝יָ֗ד SDBH . . . לֹ֣א SDBH he will not יִנָּקֶֽה׃ SDBH go unpunished

Every one that is proud in lev is to'evat Hashem; though yad join in yad, he shall not go unpunished.

בְּחֶ֣סֶד SDBH By loving devotion וֶ֭אֱמֶת SDBH and faithfulness יְכֻפַּ֣ר SDBH atoned for עָוֺ֑ן SDBH iniquity is וּבְיִרְאַ֥ת SDBH and by the fear יְ֝הוָ֗ה SDBH Hashem/Adonoi ס֣וּר SDBH [one] turns aside מֵרָֽע׃ SDBH from evil

By chesed and emes avon is purged, and by the Yirat Hashem men depart from rah.

בִּרְצ֣וֹת SDBH please יְ֭הוָה SDBH Hashem/Adonoi דַּרְכֵי־ SDBH ways אִ֑ישׁ SDBH When a man’s גַּם־ SDBH He makes even א֝וֹיְבָ֗יו SDBH [the man’s] enemies יַשְׁלִ֥ם SDBH live at peace אִתּֽוֹ׃ SDBH with him

When drakhei ish please Hashem, He maketh even his oyevim to be in shalom with him.

טוֹב־ SDBH Better מְ֭עַט SDBH a little בִּצְדָקָ֑ה SDBH with righteousness מֵרֹ֥ב than great תְּ֝בוּא֗וֹת SDBH gain בְּלֹ֣א SDBH with injustice מִשְׁפָּֽט׃ SDBH . . .

Better is a little with tzedakah than great revenues without mishpat (justice).

לֵ֣ב SDBH heart אָ֭דָם SDBH A man’s יְחַשֵּׁ֣ב SDBH plans דַּרְכּ֑וֹ SDBH his course וַֽ֝יהוָ֗ה SDBH Hashem/Adonoi יָכִ֥ין SDBH determines צַעֲדֽוֹ׃ SDBH his steps

The lev adam plans his derech, but Hashem directeth his steps.

10

קֶ֤סֶם׀ SDBH A divine verdict עַֽל־ is on שִׂפְתֵי־ SDBH the lips מֶ֑לֶךְ SDBH of a king בְּ֝מִשְׁפָּ֗ט SDBH justice לֹ֣א SDBH must not יִמְעַל־ SDBH betray פִּֽיו׃ SDBH his mouth

A kesem (oracle) is on the sfatayim (lips) of Melech, his peh (mouth) must not betray mishpat.

פֶּ֤לֶס׀ SDBH scales וּמֹאזְנֵ֣י SDBH and balances מִ֭שְׁפָּט SDBH Honest לַֽיהוָ֑ה SDBH Hashem/Adonoi מַ֝עֲשֵׂ֗הוּ SDBH are His concern כָּל־ all אַבְנֵי־ SDBH the weights כִֽיס׃ SDBH in the bag

A just weight and balance are Hashem's, all the weights of the bag are His concern.

12

תּוֹעֲבַ֣ת SDBH is detestable מְ֭לָכִים SDBH to kings עֲשׂ֣וֹת SDBH behavior רֶ֑שַׁע SDBH Wicked כִּ֥י for בִ֝צְדָקָ֗ה SDBH through righteousness יִכּ֥וֹן SDBH is established כִּסֵּֽא׃ SDBH a throne

It is to'evat melachim to commit resha (wickedness), for the kisse is established through tzedakah.

13

רְצ֣וֹן SDBH delight מְ֭לָכִים SDBH are a king’s שִׂפְתֵי־ SDBH lips צֶ֑דֶק SDBH Righteous וְדֹבֵ֖ר SDBH and he who speaks יְשָׁרִ֣ים SDBH honestly יֶאֱהָֽב׃ SDBH is beloved

Sfatayim (lips) of tzedek are the delight of melachim; and they love him that speaketh yesharim (upright things).

14

חֲמַת־ SDBH The wrath מֶ֥לֶךְ SDBH of a king מַלְאֲכֵי־ SDBH is a messenger מָ֑וֶת SDBH of death וְאִ֖ישׁ SDBH man חָכָ֣ם SDBH but a wise יְכַפְּרֶֽנָּה׃ SDBH will pacify it

The wrath of a melech is as malachim of mavet, but an ish chacham will appease it.

15

בְּאוֹר־ SDBH brightens פְּנֵי־ face מֶ֥לֶךְ SDBH When a king’s חַיִּ֑ים SDBH there is life וּ֝רְצוֹנ֗וֹ SDBH his favor כְּעָ֣ב SDBH is like a rain cloud מַלְקֽוֹשׁ׃ SDBH in spring

In the light of the countenance of melech is chayyim, and his favor is like the cloud of a spring rain.

16

קְֽנֹה־ SDBH to acquire חָכְמָ֗ה SDBH wisdom מַה־ SDBH How much טּ֥וֹב SDBH better מֵחָר֑וּץ SDBH than gold וּקְנ֥וֹת SDBH To gain בִּ֝ינָ֗ה SDBH understanding נִבְחָ֥ר SDBH is more desirable מִכָּֽסֶף׃ SDBH than silver

How much better is it to acquire chochmah than zahav, and acquiring binah (understanding) a better choice than kesef!

17

מְסִלַּ֣ת SDBH The highway יְ֭שָׁרִים SDBH of the upright ס֣וּר SDBH leads away מֵרָ֑ע SDBH from evil שֹׁמֵ֥ר SDBH protects נַ֝פְשׁ֗וֹ SDBH his life נֹצֵ֥ר SDBH he who guards דַּרְכּֽוֹ׃ SDBH his way

The mesilat yesharim (highway of the upright) is to depart from rah; he that guards his derech is shomer over his nefesh (soul).

18

לִפְנֵי־ goes before שֶׁ֥בֶר SDBH destruction גָּא֑וֹן SDBH Pride וְלִפְנֵ֥י before כִ֝שָּׁל֗וֹן SDBH a fall גֹּ֣בַהּ SDBH and a haughty רֽוּחַ׃ SDBH spirit

Ga'on (pride) goeth before shever (destruction), and a ruach of haughtiness before a fall.

19

ט֣וֹב SDBH It is better שְׁפַל־ SDBH to be lowly ר֭וּחַ SDBH in spirit אֶת־ SDBH among עֲנִיִּים SDBH the humble מֵֽחַלֵּ֥ק SDBH than to divide שָׁ֝לָ֗ל SDBH the spoil אֶת־ SDBH with גֵּאִֽים׃ SDBH the proud

Better it is to be of a humble ruach among the anayim, than to divide the plunder with the proud.

20

מַשְׂכִּ֣יל SDBH Whoever heeds עַל־ . . . דָּ֭בָר SDBH instruction יִמְצָא־ SDBH will find ט֑וֹב SDBH success וּבוֹטֵ֖חַ SDBH is he who trusts בַּיהוָ֣ה SDBH Hashem/Adonoi אַשְׁרָֽיו׃ SDBH and blessed

He that wisely heeds the Davar shall find tov (good), and he who trusteth in Hashem, happy is he.

21

לַחֲכַם־ SDBH The wise לֵ֭ב SDBH in heart יִקָּרֵ֣א SDBH are called נָב֑וֹן SDBH discerning וּמֶ֥תֶק SDBH and pleasant שְׂ֝פָתַ֗יִם SDBH speech יֹסִ֥יף SDBH promotes לֶֽקַח׃ SDBH instruction

The chacham lev shall be called prudent, and the sweetness of the sfatayim (lips) adds to learning.

22

מְק֣וֹר SDBH is a fountain חַ֭יִּים SDBH of life שֵׂ֣כֶל SDBH Understanding בְּעָלָ֑יו SDBH to its possessor וּמוּסַ֖ר SDBH but the discipline אֱוִלִ֣ים SDBH of fools אִוֶּֽלֶת׃ SDBH is folly

Seichel is a Makor Chayyim unto him that hath it, but the musar (instruction, discipline) of fools is folly.

23

לֵ֣ב SDBH The heart חָ֭כָם SDBH of the wise [man] יַשְׂכִּ֣יל SDBH instructs פִּ֑יהוּ SDBH his mouth וְעַל־ to שְׂ֝פָתָ֗יו SDBH his lips יֹסִ֥יף SDBH and adds לֶֽקַח׃ SDBH persuasiveness

The lev chacham guides his peh (mouth), and addeth learning to his sfatayim (lips).

24

צוּף־ SDBH are a honeycomb דְּ֭בַשׁ SDBH . . . אִמְרֵי־ SDBH words נֹ֑עַם SDBH Pleasant מָת֥וֹק SDBH sweet לַ֝נֶּפֶשׁ SDBH to the soul וּמַרְפֵּ֥א SDBH and healing לָעָֽצֶם׃ SDBH to the bones

Pleasant words are as a honeycomb, sweet to the nefesh, and marpeh (healing) to the atzmot (bones).

25

יֵ֤שׁ There is דֶּ֣רֶךְ SDBH a way יָ֭שָׁר SDBH that seems right לִפְנֵי־ to אִ֑ישׁ SDBH a man וְ֝אַחֲרִיתָ֗הּ SDBH but its end דַּרְכֵי־ SDBH is the way מָֽוֶת׃ SDBH of death

There is a derech that seemeth yashar (right) before an ish, but its acharit (future, latter end) is the drakhei mavet.

26

נֶ֣פֶשׁ SDBH appetite עָ֭מֵל SDBH A worker’s עָ֣מְלָה SDBH works לּ֑וֹ for him כִּֽי־ because אָכַ֖ף SDBH drives him עָלָ֣יו onward פִּֽיהוּ׃ SDBH his hunger

The nefesh (appetite) of the laborer works for him, for his peh (mouth) of hunger driveth him on.

27

אִ֣ישׁ SDBH man בְּ֭לִיַּעַל SDBH A worthless כֹּרֶ֣ה SDBH digs up רָעָ֑ה SDBH evil וְעַל־ vvv שְׂפָתָיו SDBH and his speech כְּאֵ֣שׁ SDBH fire צָרָֽבֶת׃ SDBH is like a scorching

An ish Beliya'al diggeth up ra'ah, and in his sfatayim (lips) there is as a scorching eish.

28

אִ֣ישׁ SDBH man תַּ֭הְפֻּכוֹת SDBH A perverse יְשַׁלַּ֣ח SDBH spreads מָד֑וֹן SDBH dissension וְ֝נִרְגָּ֗ן SDBH and a gossip מַפְרִ֥יד SDBH divides אַלּֽוּף׃ SDBH close friends

A perverse ish soweth madon (strife, dissension), and a whisperer separateth close friends.

29

אִ֣ישׁ SDBH man חָ֭מָס SDBH A violent יְפַתֶּ֣ה SDBH entices רֵעֵ֑הוּ SDBH his neighbor וְ֝הוֹלִיכ֗וֹ SDBH and leads him בְּדֶ֣רֶךְ SDBH down a path לֹא־ SDBH [that is] not טֽוֹב׃ SDBH good

An ish chamas enticeth his re'a, and leadeth him into the derech that is not good.

30

עֹצֶ֣ה SDBH He who winks עֵ֭ינָיו SDBH his eye לַחְשֹׁ֣ב SDBH devises תַּהְפֻּכ֑וֹת SDBH perversity קֹרֵ֥ץ SDBH he who purses שְׂ֝פָתָ֗יו SDBH his lips כִּלָּ֥ה SDBH is bent on רָעָֽה׃ SDBH evil

He winking his eynayim to plot perverse things, compressing his sfatayim (lips), bringeth ra'ah to pass.

31

עֲטֶ֣רֶת SDBH [is] a crown תִּפְאֶ֣רֶת SDBH of glory שֵׂיבָ֑ה SDBH Gray hair בְּדֶ֥רֶךְ SDBH along the path צְ֝דָקָ֗ה SDBH of righteousness תִּמָּצֵֽא׃ SDBH it is attained

The silvery hair is an ateret tiferet; it is found in the derech tzedakah.

32

ט֤וֹב SDBH [is] better אֶ֣רֶךְ SDBH [He who is] slow אַ֭פַּיִם SDBH to anger מִגִּבּ֑וֹר SDBH than a warrior וּמֹשֵׁ֥ל SDBH and he who controls בְּ֝רוּח֗וֹ SDBH his temper [is greater] מִלֹּכֵ֥ד SDBH than one who captures עִֽיר׃ SDBH a city

He that is slow to anger is better than the gibbor; and he that ruleth his ruach than he that captures a city.

33

בַּ֭חֵיק SDBH into the lap יוּטַ֣ל SDBH is cast אֶת־ SDBH - הַגּוֹרָ֑ל SDBH The lot וּ֝מֵיְהוָ֗ה SDBH Hashem/Adonoi כָּל־ but its every מִשְׁפָּטֽוֹ׃ SDBH decision

The goral is cast into the kheyk (lap), but the whole decision thereof is from Hashem.
