מַֽעֲנֶה־ SDBH answer רַּ֭ךְ SDBH A gentle יָשִׁ֣יב SDBH turns away חֵמָ֑ה SDBH wrath וּדְבַר־ SDBH word עֶ֝֗צֶב SDBH but a harsh יַעֲלֶה־ SDBH stirs up אָֽף׃ SDBH anger

A soft answer turneth away chemah (wrath); but harsh devarim stir up anger.

לְשׁ֣וֹן SDBH The tongue חֲ֭כָמִים SDBH of the wise תֵּיטִ֣יב SDBH commends דָּ֑עַת SDBH knowledge וּפִ֥י SDBH but the mouth כְ֝סִילִ֗ים SDBH of the fool יַבִּ֥יעַ SDBH spouts אִוֶּֽלֶת׃ SDBH folly

The lashon of chachamim useth da'as aright, but the peh (mouth) of kesilim (fools) poureth out folly.

בְּֽכָל־ are in every מָ֭קוֹם SDBH place עֵינֵ֣י SDBH The eyes יְהוָ֑ה SDBH Hashem/Adonoi צֹ֝פ֗וֹת SDBH observing רָעִ֥ים SDBH the evil וטוֹבִֽים׃ SDBH and the good

The eynayim of Hashem are in kol makom (every place), watching the ra'im and the tovim.

מַרְפֵּ֣א SDBH A soothing לָ֭שׁוֹן SDBH tongue עֵ֣ץ SDBH is a tree חַיִּ֑ים SDBH of life וְסֶ֥לֶף SDBH but a perverse בָּ֝֗הּ [tongue] שֶׁ֣בֶר SDBH crushes בְּרֽוּחַ׃ SDBH the spirit

A marpeh lashon (a tongue of healing) is an Etz Chayyim, but selef (perversity) therein is crushing to the ruach (spirit).

אֱוִ֗יל SDBH A fool יִ֭נְאַץ SDBH rejects מוּסַ֣ר SDBH discipline אָבִ֑יו SDBH his father’s וְשֹׁמֵ֖ר SDBH but whoever heeds תּוֹכַ֣חַת SDBH correction יַעְרִֽם׃ SDBH is prudent

A fool spurns his musar av, but he that is shomer over tokhakhat (reproof) is prudent.

בֵּ֣ית SDBH The house צַ֭דִּיק SDBH of the righteous חֹ֣סֶן SDBH treasure רָ֑ב SDBH has great וּבִתְבוּאַ֖ת SDBH but the income רָשָׁ֣ע SDBH of the wicked נֶעְכָּֽרֶת׃ SDBH is trouble

In the bais of the tzaddik is much treasure, but in the revenues of the rashah is trouble.

שִׂפְתֵ֣י SDBH The lips חֲ֭כָמִים SDBH of the wise יְזָ֣רוּ SDBH spread דָ֑עַת SDBH knowledge וְלֵ֖ב SDBH the hearts כְּסִילִ֣ים SDBH of fools לֹא־ SDBH but not כֵֽן׃ SDBH so

The sfatayim (lips) of chachamim disperse da'as, but the lev of kesilim doeth not so.

זֶ֣בַח SDBH The sacrifice רְ֭שָׁעִים SDBH of the wicked תּוֹעֲבַ֣ת SDBH is detestable יְהוָ֑ה SDBH Hashem/Adonoi וּתְפִלַּ֖ת SDBH but the prayer יְשָׁרִ֣ים SDBH of the upright רְצוֹנֽוֹ׃ SDBH is His delight

The zevach of the resha'im is a to'evah to Hashem, but the tefillah (prayer) of the yesharim is His delight.

תּוֹעֲבַ֣ת SDBH detests יְ֭הוָה SDBH Hashem/Adonoi דֶּ֣רֶךְ SDBH the way רָשָׁ֑ע SDBH of the wicked וּמְרַדֵּ֖ף SDBH those who pursue צְדָקָ֣ה SDBH righteousness יֶאֱהָֽב׃ SDBH but He loves

The derech rashah is a to'evah unto Hashem, but He loveth him that pursueth tzedakah.

10

מוּסָ֣ר SDBH Discipline רָ֭ע SDBH is harsh לְעֹזֵ֣ב SDBH for him who leaves אֹ֑רַח SDBH the path שׂוֹנֵ֖א SDBH he who hates תוֹכַ֣חַת SDBH correction יָמֽוּת׃ SDBH will die

Musar is grievous unto him that forsaketh the orach (way), and he that hateth tokhakhat (reproof) shall die.

שְׁא֣וֹל SDBH Sheol וַ֭אֲבַדּוֹן SDBH and Abaddon נֶ֣גֶד lie open before יְהוָ֑ה SDBH Hashem/Adonoi אַ֝֗ף SDBH how much more כִּֽי־ . . . לִבּ֥וֹת SDBH the hearts בְּֽנֵי־ SDBH vvv אָדָֽם׃ SDBH of men

Sheol and Avaddon are before Hashem, how much more then the hearts of Bnei Adam?

12

לֹ֣א SDBH does not יֶאֱהַב־ SDBH love לֵ֭ץ SDBH A mocker הוֹכֵ֣חַֽ SDBH to be reproved ל֑וֹ vvv אֶל־ consult חֲ֝כָמִ֗ים SDBH the wise לֹ֣א SDBH nor will he יֵלֵֽךְ׃ SDBH . . .

A scoffer loveth not one that correcteth him, neither will he go unto chachamim.

לֵ֣ב SDBH heart שָׂ֭מֵחַ SDBH A joyful יֵיטִ֣ב SDBH makes a cheerful פָּנִ֑ים countenance וּבְעַצְּבַת־ SDBH but sorrow לֵ֝ב SDBH of the heart ר֣וּחַ SDBH the spirit נְכֵאָֽה׃ SDBH crushes

A lev same'ach maketh a cheerful countenance, but by sorrow of the lev the ruach is broken.

לֵ֣ב SDBH heart נָ֭בוֹן SDBH A discerning יְבַקֶּשׁ־ SDBH seeks דָּ֑עַת SDBH knowledge וּפְנֵי but the mouth כְ֝סִילִ֗ים SDBH of a fool יִרְעֶ֥ה SDBH feeds on אִוֶּֽלֶת׃ SDBH folly

The lev of him that hath understanding seeketh da'as, but the peh (mouth) of kesilim feedeth on folly.

15

כָּל־ All יְמֵ֣י SDBH the days עָנִ֣י SDBH of the oppressed רָעִ֑ים SDBH are bad וְטֽוֹב־ SDBH but a cheerful לֵ֝֗ב SDBH heart מִשְׁתֶּ֥ה SDBH feast תָמִֽיד׃ SDBH has a continual

All the days of the oni are ra'im, but he that is of a tov lev hath a mishteh tamid (a continual feast).

16

טוֹב־ SDBH Better מְ֭עַט SDBH a little בְּיִרְאַ֣ת SDBH with the fear יְהוָ֑ה SDBH Hashem/Adonoi מֵאוֹצָ֥ר SDBH treasure רָ֝֗ב SDBH than great וּמְה֥וּמָה SDBH with turmoil בֽוֹ׃

Better is little with the Yirat Hashem than otzar rav (great treasure) and trouble therewith.

17

ט֤וֹב SDBH Better אֲרֻחַ֣ת SDBH a dish יָ֭רָק SDBH of vegetables וְאַהֲבָה־ SDBH there is love שָׁ֑ם SDBH where מִשּׁ֥וֹר SDBH ox אָ֝ב֗וּס SDBH than a fattened וְשִׂנְאָה־ SDBH with hatred בֽוֹ׃

Better is a meal of yarak (vegetables) where love is, than a fatted calf and sinah (hatred) therewith.

18

אִ֣ישׁ SDBH man חֵ֭מָה SDBH A hot-tempered יְגָרֶ֣ה SDBH stirs up מָד֑וֹן SDBH strife וְאֶ֥רֶך SDBH but he who is slow אַ֝פַּ֗יִם SDBH to anger יַשְׁקִ֥יט SDBH calms רִֽיב׃ SDBH dispute

An ish chemah (angry man) stirreth up madon (strife), but he that is slow to anger pacifies a quarrel.

19

דֶּ֣רֶךְ SDBH The way עָ֭צֵל SDBH of the slacker כִּמְשֻׂ֣כַת SDBH is like a hedge חָ֑דֶק SDBH of thorns וְאֹ֖רַח SDBH but the path יְשָׁרִ֣ים SDBH of the upright סְלֻלָֽה׃ SDBH is a highway

The derech (road) of the atzel (sluggard, lazy one) is a thorny hedge, but the orach yesharim (way of the upright) is a highway.

20

בֵּ֣ן SDBH son חָ֭כָם SDBH A wise יְשַׂמַּח־ SDBH brings joy אָ֑ב SDBH to his father וּכְסִ֥יל SDBH but a foolish אָ֝דָ֗ם SDBH man בּוֹזֶ֥ה SDBH despises אִמּֽוֹ׃ SDBH his mother

A ben chacham maketh glad an av, but a kesil adam despiseth immo.

21

אִ֭וֶּלֶת SDBH Folly שִׂמְחָ֣ה SDBH is joy לַחֲסַר־ SDBH to one who lacks לֵ֑ב SDBH judgment וְאִ֥ישׁ SDBH but a man תְּ֝בוּנָ֗ה SDBH of understanding יְיַשֶׁר־ SDBH a straight path לָֽכֶת׃ SDBH walks

Folly is simchah to him that is destitute of lev [of discernment], but an ish tevunah walketh uprightly.

22

הָפֵ֣ר SDBH fail מַ֭חֲשָׁבוֹת SDBH Plans בְּאֵ֣ין SDBH for lack ס֑וֹד SDBH of counsel וּבְרֹ֖ב but with many יוֹעֲצִ֣ים SDBH advisers תָּקֽוּם׃ SDBH they succeed

Without counsel, plans go amiss, but in the multitude of yo'atzim (counsellors) they are established.

23

שִׂמְחָ֣ה SDBH takes joy לָ֭אִישׁ SDBH A man בְּמַעֲנֵה־ SDBH in a fitting reply פִ֑יו SDBH . . . וְדָבָ֖ר SDBH word בְּעִתּ֣וֹ SDBH a timely מַה־ SDBH and how טּֽוֹב׃ SDBH good is

An ish hath simchah in the apt reply of his peh (mouth), and a timely davar, mah tov (how good!)

24

אֹ֣רַח SDBH The path חַ֭יִּים SDBH of life לְמַ֣עְלָה SDBH [leads] upward לְמַשְׂכִּ֑יל SDBH for the wise לְמַ֥עַן that ס֝֗וּר SDBH he may avoid מִשְּׁא֥וֹל SDBH to Sheol מָֽטָּה׃ SDBH going down

The Orach Chayyim leads upward to the wise, in order that he may depart from Sheol beneath.

25

בֵּ֣ית SDBH the house גֵּ֭אִים SDBH of the proud יִסַּ֥ח׀ SDBH tears down יְהוָ֑ה SDBH Hashem/Adonoi וְ֝יַצֵּ֗ב SDBH but He protects גְּב֣וּל SDBH the boundaries אַלְמָנָֽה׃ SDBH of the widow

Hashem will destroy the bais of the proud, but he will maintain the boundary of the almanah.

26

תּוֹעֲבַ֣ת SDBH detests יְ֭הוָה SDBH Hashem/Adonoi מַחְשְׁב֣וֹת SDBH the thoughts רָ֑ע SDBH of the wicked וּ֝טְהֹרִ֗ים SDBH of the pure אִמְרֵי־ SDBH but the words נֹֽעַם׃ SDBH are pleasant [to Him]

The thoughts of the rah are a to'evah to Hashem, but the words of the tehorim (pure ones) are pleasant.

27

עֹכֵ֣ר SDBH brings trouble בֵּ֭יתוֹ SDBH on his household בּוֹצֵ֣עַ SDBH He who is greedy בָּ֑צַע SDBH for unjust gain וְשׂוֹנֵ֖א SDBH but he who hates מַתָּנֹ֣ת SDBH bribes יִחְיֶֽה׃ SDBH will live

He that is greedy of unjust gain troubleth his own bais, but he that hateth mattanot (bribes) shall live.

28

לֵ֣ב SDBH The heart צַ֭דִּיק SDBH of the righteous יֶהְגֶּ֣ה SDBH ponders לַעֲנ֑וֹת SDBH how to answer וּפִ֥י SDBH but the mouth רְ֝שָׁעִ֗ים SDBH of the wicked יַבִּ֥יעַ SDBH blurts out רָעֽוֹת׃ SDBH evil

The lev tzaddik studieth how to answer, but the peh (mouth) of the resha'im poureth out evil things.

29

רָח֣וֹק SDBH is far יְ֭הוָה SDBH Hashem/Adonoi מֵרְשָׁעִ֑ים SDBH from the wicked וּתְפִלַּ֖ת SDBH the prayer צַדִּיקִ֣ים SDBH of the righteous יִשְׁמָֽע׃ SDBH but He hears

Hashem is far from the resha'im, but He heareth the tefillah of the tzaddikim.

30

מְֽאוֹר־ SDBH The light עֵ֭ינַיִם SDBH of the eyes יְשַׂמַּֽח־ SDBH cheers לֵ֑ב SDBH the heart שְׁמוּעָ֥ה SDBH news ט֝וֹבָ֗ה SDBH [and] good תְּדַשֶּׁן־ SDBH nourishes עָֽצֶם׃ SDBH the bones

The ohr (light) of the eynayim rejoiceth the lev, and a good report giveth health to the etzem.

31

אֹ֗זֶן SDBH vvv שֹׁ֭מַעַת SDBH He who listens to תּוֹכַ֣חַת SDBH reproof חַיִּ֑ים SDBH life-giving בְּקֶ֖רֶב SDBH among חֲכָמִ֣ים SDBH the wise תָּלִֽין׃ SDBH will dwell

The ozen that heareth the tokhakhat chayyim (reproof of life) lodgeth among chachamim.

32

פּוֹרֵ֣עַ SDBH He who ignores מ֭וּסָר SDBH discipline מוֹאֵ֣ס SDBH despises נַפְשׁ֑וֹ SDBH himself וְשׁוֹמֵ֥עַ SDBH but whoever heeds תּ֝וֹכַ֗חַת SDBH correction ק֣וֹנֶה SDBH gains לֵּֽב׃ SDBH understanding

He that refuseth musar despiseth his own nefesh, but he that heareth tokhakhat (reproof) gaineth lev [of understanding].

33

יִרְאַ֣ת SDBH The fear יְ֭הוָה SDBH Hashem/Adonoi מוּסַ֣ר SDBH [is] the instruction חָכְמָ֑ה SDBH of wisdom וְלִפְנֵ֖י comes before כָב֣וֹד SDBH honor עֲנָוָֽה׃ SDBH and humility

The Yirat Hashem is the musar of chochmah; and before kavod (honor) is anavah (humility).
