מִ֭שְׁלֵי SDBH [These are] the proverbs שְׁלֹמֹ֣ה SDBH of Solomon בֶן־ SDBH son דָּוִ֑ד SDBH of David מֶ֝֗לֶךְ SDBH king יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ SDBH of Israel

Mishlei Sh'lomo Ben Dovid, Melech Yisroel;

לָדַ֣עַת SDBH for gaining חָכְמָ֣ה SDBH wisdom וּמוּסָ֑ר SDBH and discipline לְ֝הָבִ֗ין SDBH for comprehending אִמְרֵ֥י SDBH words בִינָֽה׃ SDBH of insight

To have da'as of chochmah and musar (discipline); to understand the words of binah;

לָ֭קַחַת SDBH [and] for receiving מוּסַ֣ר SDBH instruction הַשְׂכֵּ֑ל SDBH in wise living צֶ֥דֶק SDBH and in righteousness וּ֝מִשְׁפָּ֗ט SDBH justice וּמֵישָׁרִֽים׃ SDBH and equity

To receive the musar of those with seichel, tzedek and mishpat, and meisharim (equity, uprightness);

לָתֵ֣ת To impart לִפְתָאיִ֣ם SDBH to the simple עָרְמָ֑ה SDBH prudence לְ֝נַ֗עַר SDBH to the young דַּ֣עַת SDBH [and] knowledge וּמְזִמָּֽה׃ SDBH and discretion

To give subtlety to the simple, to the na'ar, da'as and discretion.

יִשְׁמַ֣ע SDBH listen חָ֭כָם SDBH {let} the wise וְי֣וֹסֶף SDBH and gain לֶ֑קַח SDBH instruction וְ֝נָב֗וֹן SDBH and the discerning תַּחְבֻּל֥וֹת SDBH wise counsel יִקְנֶֽה׃ SDBH acquire

A chacham (wise person) will hear, and will increase learning, and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:

לְהָבִ֣ין SDBH by understanding מָ֭שָׁל SDBH the proverbs וּמְלִיצָ֑ה SDBH and parables דִּבְרֵ֥י SDBH the sayings חֲ֝כָמִ֗ים SDBH of the wise וְחִידֹתָֽם׃ SDBH and riddles

To understand a mashal (proverb), and the melitzah (enigma); the divrei chachamim, and their chidot (riddles).

יִרְאַ֣ת SDBH The fear יְ֭הוָה SDBH Hashem/Adonoi רֵאשִׁ֣ית SDBH [is] the beginning דָּ֑עַת SDBH of knowledge חָכְמָ֥ה SDBH wisdom וּ֝מוּסָ֗ר SDBH and discipline אֱוִילִ֥ים SDBH [but] fools בָּֽזוּ׃פ SDBH despise

The Yirat Hashem is the reshit da'as, but fools despise chochmah and musar.

שְׁמַ֣ע SDBH Listen בְּ֭נִי SDBH my son מוּסַ֣ר SDBH instruction אָבִ֑יךָ SDBH to your father’s וְאַל־ . . . תִּ֝טֹּ֗שׁ SDBH and do not forsake תּוֹרַ֥ת SDBH the teaching אִמֶּֽךָ׃ SDBH of your mother

Beni (my son), hear the musar Avicha, and forsake not the Torat Immecha.

כִּ֤י׀ For לִוְיַ֤ת SDBH [are] a garland חֵ֓ן SDBH of grace הֵ֬ם SDBH they לְרֹאשֶׁ֑ךָ SDBH on your head וַ֝עֲנָקִ֗ים SDBH and a pendant לְגַרְגְּרֹתֶֽיךָ׃ SDBH around your neck

For they shall be a garland of chen unto thy rosh, and a chain about thy neck.

בְּנִ֡י SDBH My son אִם־ SDBH if יְפַתּ֥וּךָ SDBH entice you חַ֝טָּאִ֗ים SDBH sinners אַל־ do not תֹּבֵֽא׃ SDBH yield [to them]

Beni (my son), if chatt'aim (sinners) entice thee, consent thou not.

11

אִם־ SDBH If יֹאמְרוּ֮ SDBH they say לְכָ֪ה SDBH Come אִ֫תָּ֥נוּ SDBH along נֶאֶרְבָ֥ה SDBH let us lie in wait לְדָ֑ם SDBH for blood נִצְפְּנָ֖ה SDBH let us ambush לְנָקִ֣י SDBH the innocent חִנָּֽם׃ SDBH without cause

If they say, Come with us, let us lie in wait for dahm, let us lurk secretly for the naki (innocent, harmless) chinnom (without cause);

נִ֭בְלָעֵם SDBH let us swallow them כִּשְׁא֣וֹל SDBH like Sheol חַיִּ֑ים SDBH alive וּ֝תְמִימִ֗ים SDBH and whole כְּי֣וֹרְדֵי SDBH like those descending בֽוֹר׃ SDBH into the Pit

Let us swallow them up chayyim (alive) like She'ol; and whole, as those that go down into the bor (pit);

13

כָּל־ all manner ה֣וֹן SDBH goods יָקָ֣ר SDBH of precious נִמְצָ֑א SDBH We {will} find נְמַלֵּ֖א SDBH we {will} fill בָתֵּ֣ינוּ SDBH our houses שָׁלָֽל׃ SDBH with plunder

We shall find all precious substance, we shall fill bateinu (our houses) with plunder;

גּ֭וֹרָ֣לְךָ SDBH your lot תַּפִּ֣יל SDBH Throw in בְּתוֹכֵ֑נוּ SDBH with us כִּ֥יס SDBH purse אֶ֝חָ֗ד SDBH one יִהְיֶ֥ה share לְכֻלָּֽנוּ׃ let us all

Throw in thy goral (lot) among us; let all of us have kis echad (one pouch, purse).

15

בְּנִ֗י SDBH my son אַל־ do not תֵּלֵ֣ךְ SDBH walk בְּדֶ֣רֶךְ SDBH the road אִתָּ֑ם SDBH with them מְנַ֥ע SDBH or set רַ֝גְלְךָ֗ SDBH foot מִנְּתִיבָתָֽם׃ SDBH upon their path

Beni (my son), walk not thou in the derech with them; refrain thy regel from their path;

16

כִּ֣י For רַ֭גְלֵיהֶם SDBH their feet לָרַ֣ע SDBH to evil יָר֑וּצוּ SDBH run וִֽ֝ימַהֲר֗וּ SDBH and they are swift לִשְׁפָּךְ־ SDBH to shed דָּֽם׃ SDBH blood

For their raglayim run to rah, and make haste for shefach dahm (shedding of blood).

17

כִּֽי־ How חִ֭נָּם SDBH futile [it is] מְזֹרָ֣ה SDBH to spread הָרָ֑שֶׁת SDBH the net בְּ֝עֵינֵ֗י SDBH can see it כָל־ where any בַּ֥עַל SDBH bird כָּנָֽף׃ SDBH . . .

Surely in vain the reshet (net) is spread in the eyes of kol ba'al kanaf (all the birds, i.e., lit. master of [the] wing);

18

וְ֭הֵם SDBH But they לְדָמָ֣ם SDBH for their [own] blood יֶאֱרֹ֑בוּ SDBH lie in wait יִ֝צְפְּנ֗וּ SDBH they ambush לְנַפְשֹׁתָֽם׃ SDBH their [own] lives

And they lie in wait for their own dahm; they lurk secretly for their own nafshot.

19

כֵּ֗ן SDBH Such [is] אָ֭רְחוֹת SDBH the fate כָּל־ of all בֹּ֣צֵֽעַ SDBH who are greedy בָּ֑צַע SDBH whose unjust gain אֶת־ SDBH - נֶ֖פֶשׁ SDBH the lives בְּעָלָ֣יו SDBH of its possessors יִקָּֽח׃פ SDBH takes

So are the ways of every one that is greedy for betza (ill-gotten gain); which taketh away the nefesh of the be'alim (owners) thereof.

20

חָ֭כְמוֹת SDBH Wisdom בַּח֣וּץ SDBH in the street תָּרֹ֑נָּה SDBH calls out בָּ֝רְחֹב֗וֹת SDBH in the square תִּתֵּ֥ן she lifts קוֹלָֽהּ׃ SDBH her voice

Chochmot crieth out in the street; she lifts up her voice in the rechovot (city squares);

21

בְּרֹ֥אשׁ SDBH in the main הֹמִיּ֗וֹת SDBH concourse תִּ֫קְרָ֥א SDBH she cries aloud בְּפִתְחֵ֖י SDBH vvv שְׁעָרִ֥ים SDBH gates בָּעִ֗יר SDBH at the city אֲמָרֶ֥יהָ SDBH her speech תֹאמֵֽר׃ SDBH she makes

She crieth out in the chief place of concourse, in the openings of the she'arim (gates); in the Ir (city) she uttereth her words, saying,

22

עַד־ SDBH How מָתַ֣י׀ SDBH long פְּתָיִם֮ SDBH O simple ones תְּֽאֵהֲב֫וּ SDBH will you love פֶ֥תִי SDBH your simple [ways] וְלֵצִ֗ים SDBH How long will scoffers לָ֭צוֹן SDBH in their scorn חָמְד֣וּ SDBH delight לָהֶ֑ם . . . וּ֝כְסִילִ֗ים SDBH and fools יִשְׂנְאוּ־ SDBH hate דָֽעַת׃ SDBH knowledge

Ad mosai, ye simple ones, will ye love being simpletons? And the scoffers delight in their mockery, and kesilim (fools) hate da'as?

23

תָּשׁ֗וּבוּ SDBH If you had repented לְֽת֫וֹכַחְתִּ֥י SDBH at my rebuke הִנֵּ֤ה then surely אַבִּ֣יעָה SDBH I would have poured out לָכֶ֣ם my רוּחִ֑י SDBH spirit on you אוֹדִ֖יעָה SDBH I would have made דְבָרַ֣י SDBH my words אֶתְכֶֽם׃ SDBH known to you

Turn you at my tokhechah (reproof); hinei, I will pour out my ruach unto you, I will make known my devarim unto you.

24

יַ֣עַן SDBH Because קָ֭רָאתִי SDBH my call וַתְּמָאֵ֑נוּ SDBH you refused נָטִ֥יתִי SDBH my outstretched יָ֝דִ֗י SDBH hand וְאֵ֣ין SDBH and no one מַקְשִֽׁיב׃ SDBH took

Because I have called, and ye refused, I have stretched out my yad, and no man regarded;

25

וַתִּפְרְע֥וּ SDBH because you neglected כָל־ all עֲצָתִ֑י SDBH my counsel וְ֝תוֹכַחְתִּ֗י SDBH of my correction לֹ֣א SDBH none אֲבִיתֶֽם׃ SDBH and wanted

But ye have disdained all my etza (counsel), and would have none of my tokhechah (reproof);

26

גַּם־ SDBH in turn אֲ֭נִי SDBH I בְּאֵידְכֶ֣ם SDBH your calamity אֶשְׂחָ֑ק SDBH will mock אֶ֝לְעַ֗ג SDBH I will sneer בְּבֹ֣א SDBH strikes you פַחְדְּכֶֽם׃ SDBH when terror

I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your pachad (terror) cometh;

27

בְּבֹ֤א SDBH comes כְשַׁאֲוָה SDBH like a storm פַּחְדְּכֶ֗ם SDBH when your dread וְֽ֭אֵידְכֶם SDBH and your destruction כְּסוּפָ֣ה SDBH like a whirlwind יֶאֱתֶ֑ה SDBH - בְּבֹ֥א SDBH overwhelm you עֲ֝לֵיכֶ֗ם . . . צָרָ֥ה SDBH when distress וְצוּקָֽה׃ SDBH and anguish

When your pachad (terror) cometh like a storm, and your calamity cometh like a whirlwind; when tzarah (distress) and oppression cometh upon you.

28

אָ֣ז SDBH Then יִ֭קְרָאֻנְנִי SDBH they will call on me וְלֹ֣א SDBH but I will not אֶֽעֱנֶ֑ה SDBH answer יְ֝שַׁחֲרֻ֗נְנִי SDBH they {will} earnestly seek me וְלֹ֣א SDBH but {will} not יִמְצָאֻֽנְנִי׃ SDBH find me

Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall look for me diligently, but they shall not find me;

29

תַּ֭חַת SDBH vvv כִּי־ For שָׂ֣נְאוּ SDBH they hated דָ֑עַת SDBH knowledge וְיִרְאַ֥ת SDBH to fear יְ֝הֹוָ֗ה SDBH Hashem/Adonoi לֹ֣א SDBH not בָחָֽרוּ׃ SDBH and chose

For that they hated da'as, and did not choose the Yirat Hashem;

30

לֹא־ SDBH none אָב֥וּ SDBH They accepted לַעֲצָתִ֑י SDBH of my counsel נָ֝אֲצ֗וּ SDBH they despised כָּל־ all תּוֹכַחְתִּֽי׃ SDBH my reproof

They would have none of my etza (counsel); they despised all my tokhechah (reproof).

31

וְֽ֭יֹאכְלוּ SDBH So they {will} eat מִפְּרִ֣י SDBH the fruit דַרְכָּ֑ם SDBH of their own way וּֽמִמֹּעֲצֹ֖תֵיהֶ֣ם SDBH with their own devices יִשְׂבָּֽעוּ׃ SDBH and be filled

Therefore shall they eat of the p'ri (fruit) of their own derech, and be filled with their own mo'atzot (schemes, devices).

32

כִּ֤י For מְשׁוּבַ֣ת SDBH the waywardness פְּתָיִ֣ם SDBH of the simple תַּֽהַרְגֵ֑ם SDBH will slay them וְשַׁלְוַ֖ת SDBH and the complacency כְּסִילִ֣ים SDBH of fools תְּאַבְּדֵֽם׃ SDBH will destroy them

For the waywardness of the simple shall slay them, and the complacent contentment of kesilim (fools) shall destroy them.

33

וְשֹׁמֵ֣עַֽ SDBH But whoever listens לִ֭י to me יִשְׁכָּן־ SDBH {will} dwell בֶּ֑טַח SDBH in safety וְ֝שַׁאֲנַ֗ן SDBH secure מִפַּ֥חַד SDBH from the fear רָעָֽה׃פ SDBH of evil

But the one who payeth heed unto me [CHOCHMAT HASHEM, I.E., THE REDEMPTIVE WORD, NOT ONLY HASHEM'S CREATIVE AGENT (PS 33:6; PROV 3:19) BUT THE ONE WHO COMES WITH A HEALING MISSION ACCORDING TO PS 107:20, THOUGH MOSHIACH HAS TO DIE IN THE MIDST OF HIS HEALING MISSION TO ACCOMPLISH OUR HEALING FROM GUILT AND PUNITIVE DREAD-ISA 53:5] shall dwell safely, and shall be secure from pachad ra'ah (terror of evil).
