לְדָוִ֗ד SDBH Of David מַ֫שְׂכִּ֥יל SDBH A Maskil אַשְׁרֵ֥י SDBH Blessed is he נְֽשׂוּי־ SDBH are forgiven פֶּ֗שַׁע SDBH whose transgressions כְּס֣וּי SDBH are covered חֲטָאָֽה׃ SDBH whose sins

(Of David. A maskil). Ashrei is he whose peysha (rebellion) is forgiven, whose chata'ah (sin) is covered.

אַ֥שְֽׁרֵי SDBH Blessed אָדָ֗ם SDBH is the man לֹ֤א SDBH does not יַחְשֹׁ֬ב SDBH count יְהוָ֣ה SDBH Hashem/Adonoi ל֣וֹ against him עָוֺ֑ן SDBH whose iniquity וְאֵ֖ין SDBH there is no בְּרוּח֣וֹ SDBH in whose spirit רְמִיָּה׃ SDBH deceit

Ashrei is the adam unto whom Hashem imputeth not avon (iniquity), and in whose ruach there is no remiyyah (guile, deceit).

כִּֽי־ When הֶ֭חֱרַשְׁתִּי SDBH I kept silent בָּל֣וּ SDBH became brittle עֲצָמָ֑י SDBH my bones בְּ֝שַׁאֲגָתִ֗י SDBH from my groaning כָּל־ all day long הַיּֽוֹם׃ SDBH . . .

When I kept silent [I.E., REFUSED TO CONFESS MY SIN, WHICH WAS STILL NAKED AND UNCOVERED (SEE 32:1) AND HAD NO KAPPORAH COVERING FOR MY GUILT BEFORE G-D], my atzmot wasted away through my groaning kol hayom (all the day).

כִּ֤י׀ For יוֹמָ֣ם SDBH day וָלַיְלָה֮ SDBH and night תִּכְבַּ֥ד SDBH was heavy עָלַ֗י upon me יָ֫דֶ֥ךָ SDBH Your hand נֶהְפַּ֥ךְ SDBH was drained לְשַׁדִּ֑י SDBH my strength בְּחַרְבֹ֖נֵי SDBH heat קַ֣יִץ SDBH as in the summer סֶֽלָה׃ SDBH Selah

For yomam valailah Thy yad was heavy upon me; my strength was sapped as by the droughts of kayitz (summer). Selah.

חַטָּאתִ֨י SDBH my sin to You אוֹדִ֪יעֲךָ֡ SDBH Then I acknowledged וַעֲוֺ֘נִ֤י SDBH my iniquity לֹֽא־ SDBH and did not כִסִּ֗יתִי SDBH hide אָמַ֗רְתִּי SDBH I said אוֹדֶ֤ה SDBH I will confess עֲלֵ֣י . . . פְ֭שָׁעַי SDBH my transgressions לַיהוָ֑ה SDBH Hashem/Adonoi וְאַתָּ֨ה SDBH and You נָ֘שָׂ֤אתָ SDBH forgave עֲוֺ֖ן SDBH the guilt חַטָּאתִ֣י SDBH of my sin סֶֽלָה׃ SDBH Selah

I acknowledge my chattat unto Thee, and mine avon (iniquity) have I not covered up. I said, I will confess my peysha'im (rebellions) unto Hashem; and Thou forgavest the avon (iniquity) of my chattat. Selah.

עַל־ Therefore זֹ֡את SDBH . . . יִתְפַּלֵּ֬ל SDBH pray כָּל־ let all חָסִ֨יד׀ SDBH the g-dly אֵלֶיךָ֮ to You לְעֵ֪ת SDBH while מְ֫צֹ֥א SDBH You may be found רַ֗ק SDBH Surely לְ֭שֵׁטֶף SDBH waters מַ֣יִם SDBH rise רַבִּ֑ים SDBH when great אֵ֝לָ֗יו . . . לֹ֣א SDBH they will not יַגִּֽיעוּ׃ SDBH come near

Therefore shall every Chasid pray unto Thee in a time when Thou mayest be found; surely in the floods of mayim rabbim they shall not overtake him.

אַתָּ֤ה׀ SDBH You סֵ֥תֶר SDBH are my hiding place לִי֮ מִצַּ֪ר SDBH from trouble תִּ֫צְּרֵ֥נִי SDBH You protect me רָנֵּ֥י SDBH with songs פַלֵּ֑ט SDBH of deliverance תְּס֖וֹבְבֵ֣נִי SDBH You surround me סֶֽלָה׃ SDBH Selah

Thou art my seter (hiding place, shelter); Thou shalt preserve me from tzoros; Thou shalt envelop me with songs of deliverance. Selah.

אַשְׂכִּֽילְךָ֨׀ SDBH I will instruct you וְֽאוֹרְךָ֗ SDBH and teach בְּדֶֽרֶךְ־ SDBH you the way ז֥וּ SDBH . . . תֵלֵ֑ךְ SDBH you should go אִֽיעֲצָ֖ה SDBH I will give you counsel עָלֶ֣יךָ over you עֵינִֽי׃ SDBH [and] watch

I will instruct thee and teach thee in the Derech which thou shalt go; I will counsel thee with Mine eye.

אַל־ Do not תִּֽהְי֤וּ׀ be כְּס֥וּס SDBH like the horse כְּפֶרֶד֮ SDBH or mule אֵ֤ין SDBH [which] have no הָ֫בִ֥ין SDBH understanding בְּמֶֽתֶג־ SDBH with bit וָרֶ֣סֶן SDBH and bridle עֶדְי֣וֹ SDBH . . . לִבְל֑וֹם SDBH they must be controlled בַּ֝֗ל SDBH [to make] them קְרֹ֣ב SDBH come אֵלֶֽיךָ׃ to you

Be ye not like the sus, or like the pered (mule), which have no binah; whose mouth must be harnassed with bit and bridle, else they come not near thee.

רַבִּ֥ים SDBH Many מַכְאוֹבִ֗ים SDBH are the sorrows לָרָ֫שָׁ֥ע SDBH of the wicked וְהַבּוֹטֵ֥חַ SDBH who trusts בַּיהוָ֑ה SDBH Hashem/Adonoi חֶ֝֗סֶד SDBH but loving devotion יְסוֹבְבֶֽנּוּ׃ SDBH surrounds him

Many sorrows shall be to the resha'im, but he that trusteth in Hashem, chesed shall envelop and cover him.

שִׂמְח֬וּ SDBH Be glad בַֽיהוָ֣ה SDBH Hashem/Adonoi וְ֭גִילוּ SDBH and rejoice צַדִּיקִ֑ים SDBH O righteous ones וְ֝הַרְנִ֗ינוּ SDBH shout for joy כָּל־ all יִשְׁרֵי־ SDBH you upright לֵֽב׃ SDBH in heart

Be glad in Hashem, and rejoice, ye tzaddikim; and shout for joy, all ye yishrei lev (upright in heart).
