Mishle 18 — Hebrew–OJB Interlinear

לְֽ֭תַאֲוָה SDBH selfish desires יְבַקֵּ֣שׁ SDBH pursues נִפְרָ֑ד SDBH He who isolates himself בְּכָל־ against all תּ֝וּשִׁיָּ֗ה SDBH sound judgment יִתְגַּלָּֽע׃ SDBH he rebels

A man who separates himself seeks his own ta'avah (desire); he defies all tushiyyah (wisdom, sound judgment).

לֹֽא־ SDBH does not יַחְפֹּ֣ץ SDBH delight כְּ֭סִיל SDBH A fool בִּתְבוּנָ֑ה SDBH in understanding כִּ֝֗י but only אִֽם־ SDBH . . . בְּהִתְגַּלּ֥וֹת SDBH in airing לִבּֽוֹ׃ SDBH his opinions

A kesil (fool) hath no delight in tevunah (understanding), but only in airing out his lev (mind, opinions).

בְּֽבוֹא־ SDBH comes רָ֭שָׁע SDBH With a wicked [man] בָּ֣א SDBH . . . גַם־ SDBH as well בּ֑וּז SDBH contempt וְֽעִם־ is accompanied by קָל֥וֹן SDBH and shame חֶרְפָּֽה׃ SDBH disgrace

When the rashah cometh, then cometh also contempt, and with dishonor, cherpah (reproach, disgrace).

מַ֣יִם SDBH waters עֲ֭מֻקִּים SDBH are deep דִּבְרֵ֣י SDBH The words פִי־ SDBH mouth אִ֑ישׁ SDBH of a man’s נַ֥חַל SDBH brook נֹ֝בֵ֗עַ SDBH is a bubbling מְק֣וֹר SDBH the fountain חָכְמָֽה׃ SDBH of wisdom

The devarim of a man's mouth are deep mayim; the makor chochmah is a flowing stream.

שְׂאֵ֣ת SDBH Showing partiality פְּנֵי־ vvv רָשָׁ֣ע SDBH to the wicked לֹא־ SDBH is not ט֑וֹב SDBH good לְהַטּ֥וֹת SDBH nor is depriving צַ֝דִּ֗יק SDBH the innocent בַּמִּשְׁפָּֽט׃ SDBH of justice

It is not tov to show partiality to the rashah, to subvert the tzaddik in mishpat.

שִׂפְתֵ֣י SDBH lips כְ֭סִיל SDBH A fool’s יָבֹ֣אֽוּ SDBH bring him בְרִ֑יב SDBH strife וּ֝פִ֗יו SDBH and his mouth לְֽמַהֲלֻמ֥וֹת SDBH a beating יִקְרָֽא׃ SDBH invites

The sfatayim (lips) of a kesil enter into contention, and his peh (mouth) inviteth blows.

פִּֽי־ SDBH mouth כְ֭סִיל SDBH A fool’s מְחִתָּה־ SDBH is his ruin ל֑וֹ וּ֝שְׂפָתָ֗יו SDBH and his lips מוֹקֵ֥שׁ SDBH [are] a snare נַפְשֽׁוֹ׃ SDBH to his soul

The peh (mouth) of a kesil is his undoing, and his sfatayim (lips) are the mokesh (snare) of his nefesh.

דִּבְרֵ֣י SDBH The words נִ֭רְגָּן SDBH of a gossip כְּמִֽתְלַהֲמִ֑ים SDBH are like choice morsels וְ֝הֵ֗ם SDBH that יָרְד֥וּ SDBH go down חַדְרֵי־ SDBH into the inmost being בָֽטֶן׃ SDBH . . .

The devarim of a nirgan (gossip, talebearer, slanderer) are like mitlachamim (delicious tidbits), and they go down into the innermost parts of the beten (belly).

גַּ֭ם SDBH Whoever מִתְרַפֶּ֣ה SDBH is slothful בִמְלַאכְתּ֑וֹ SDBH in his work אָ֥ח SDBH is brother ה֝֗וּא SDBH . . . לְבַ֣עַל SDBH to him מַשְׁחִֽית׃ SDBH who destroys

He also that is slack in his work is brother to him that is ba'al mashchit (master of destruction).

מִגְדַּל־ SDBH tower עֹ֭ז SDBH is a strong שֵׁ֣ם SDBH The name יְהוָ֑ה SDBH Hashem/Adonoi בּֽוֹ־ to it יָר֖וּץ SDBH run צַדִּ֣יק SDBH the righteous וְנִשְׂגָּֽב׃ SDBH and are safe

The Shem of Hashem is a strong migdal (tower), the tzaddik runneth into it, and is safe.

ה֣וֹן SDBH man’s wealth עָ֭שִׁיר SDBH A rich קִרְיַ֣ת SDBH city עֻזּ֑וֹ SDBH is his fortified וּכְחוֹמָ֥ה SDBH wall נִ֝שְׂגָּבָ֗ה SDBH it is like a high בְּמַשְׂכִּיתֽוֹ׃ SDBH in his imagination

The oisher's wealth is his strong city, and is a high chomah in his own conceit.

לִפְנֵי־ Before שֶׁ֭בֶר SDBH his downfall יִגְבַּ֣הּ SDBH is proud לֵב־ SDBH heart אִ֑ישׁ SDBH a man’s וְלִפְנֵ֖י comes before כָב֣וֹד SDBH honor עֲנָוָֽה׃ SDBH but humility

Before shever (destruction) the lev ish is haughty, and before kavod is anavah (humility).

מֵשִׁ֣יב SDBH He who answers דָּ֭בָר SDBH a matter בְּטֶ֣רֶם SDBH before יִשְׁמָ֑ע SDBH he hears [it] אִוֶּ֥לֶת SDBH [is] folly הִיא־ SDBH this ל֝֗וֹ to him וּכְלִמָּֽה׃ SDBH and disgrace

He that answereth a matter before he heareth it, it is folly and kelimmah (reproach, shame) unto him.

רֽוּחַ־ SDBH The spirit אִ֭ישׁ SDBH of a man יְכַלְכֵּ֣ל SDBH can endure מַחֲלֵ֑הוּ SDBH his sickness וְר֥וּחַ SDBH spirit נְ֝כֵאָ֗ה SDBH a broken מִ֣י SDBH but who יִשָּׂאֶֽנָּה׃ SDBH can survive

The ruach ish will sustain him in sickness, but a crushed ruach who can bear?

15

לֵ֣ב SDBH The heart נָ֭בוֹן SDBH of the discerning יִקְנֶה־ SDBH acquires דָּ֑עַת SDBH knowledge וְאֹ֥זֶן SDBH and the ear חֲ֝כָמִ֗ים SDBH of the wise תְּבַקֶּשׁ־ SDBH seeks דָּֽעַת׃ SDBH it out

The lev of the prudent acquireth da'as, and the ozen of the chachamim seeketh da'as.

16

מַתָּ֣ן SDBH gift אָ֭דָם SDBH A man’s יַרְחִ֣יב SDBH opens doors ל֑וֹ for him וְלִפְנֵ֖י before גְדֹלִ֣ים SDBH great men יַנְחֶֽנּוּ׃ SDBH and brings him

The mattan adam (gift of a man) openeth the way for him, and bringeth him before gedolim.

17

צַדִּ֣יק SDBH seems right הָרִאשׁ֣וֹן SDBH The first בְּרִיב֑וֹ SDBH to state his case יָבֹא SDBH comes רֵ֝עֵ֗הוּ SDBH until another וַחֲקָרֽוֹ׃ SDBH and cross-examines him

He that is harishon (the first) to make his case seemeth tzaddik, but his re'a cometh and doth cross-examine him.

18

מִ֭דְיָנִים SDBH quarrels יַשְׁבִּ֣ית SDBH ends הַגּוֹרָ֑ל SDBH Casting the lot וּבֵ֖ין SDBH . . . עֲצוּמִ֣ים SDBH strong opponents יַפְרִֽיד׃ SDBH and separates

The goral (lot) causeth contentions to cease, and keepeth the mighty apart.

19

אָ֗ח SDBH brother [is harder to win] נִפְשָׁ֥ע SDBH An offended מִקִּרְיַת־ SDBH city עֹ֑ז SDBH than a fortified וּמְדוֹנִים SDBH and disputes כִּבְרִ֥יחַ SDBH are like the bars אַרְמֽוֹן׃ SDBH of a castle

A brother offended is harder to be won than a strong city, and their contentious quarrelings are like the bars of an armon (citadel).

20

מִפְּרִ֣י SDBH From the fruit פִי־ SDBH of his mouth אִ֭ישׁ SDBH a man’s תִּשְׂבַּ֣ע SDBH is filled בִּטְנ֑וֹ SDBH belly תְּבוּאַ֖ת SDBH with the harvest שְׂפָתָ֣יו SDBH from his lips יִשְׂבָּֽע׃ SDBH he is satisfied

An ish's beten shall be filled with the fruit of his peh (mouth), and with the produce of his sfatayim (lips) shall he be satisfied.

21

מָ֣וֶת SDBH and death וְ֭חַיִּים SDBH Life בְּיַד־ SDBH are in the power לָשׁ֑וֹן SDBH of the tongue וְ֝אֹהֲבֶ֗יהָ SDBH and those who love [it] יֹאכַ֥ל SDBH will eat פִּרְיָֽהּ׃ SDBH its fruit

Mavet and chayyim are in the power of the lashon, and they that love it shall eat the p'ri (fruit) thereof.

22

מָצָ֣א SDBH He who finds אִ֭שָּׁה SDBH a wife מָ֣צָא SDBH finds ט֑וֹב SDBH a good thing וַיָּ֥פֶק SDBH and obtains רָ֝צ֗וֹן SDBH favor מֵיְהוָֽה׃ SDBH Hashem/Adonoi

He who findeth an isha (wife) findeth tov, and obtaineth ratzon (favor) from Hashem.

23

תַּחֲנוּנִ֥ים SDBH pleads for mercy יְדַבֶּר־ SDBH . . . רָ֑שׁ SDBH The poor man וְ֝עָשִׁ֗יר SDBH but the rich man יַעֲנֶ֥ה SDBH answers עַזּֽוֹת׃ SDBH harshly

The poor useth entreaties, but the oisher answereth roughly.

24

אִ֣ישׁ SDBH A man רֵ֭עִים SDBH of many companions לְהִתְרֹעֵ֑עַ SDBH may come to ruin וְיֵ֥שׁ but there is אֹ֝הֵ֗ב SDBH a friend דָּבֵ֥ק SDBH who stays closer מֵאָֽח׃ SDBH than a brother

An ish of many companions may come to ruin, but there is an ohev (friend) that sticketh closer than a brother.
