זְב֣וּבֵי SDBH flies מָ֔וֶת SDBH As dead יַבְאִ֥ישׁ SDBH a stench יַבִּ֖יעַ SDBH bring שֶׁ֣מֶן SDBH oil רוֹקֵ֑חַ SDBH to the perfumer’s יָקָ֛ר SDBH outweighs מֵחָכְמָ֥ה SDBH wisdom מִכָּב֖וֹד SDBH and honor סִכְל֥וּת SDBH folly מְעָֽט׃ SDBH so a little

Dead flies cause the perfumer's shemen to send forth a foul odor; so doth a little sichlut outweigh chochmah and kavod.

לֵ֤ב SDBH heart חָכָם֙ SDBH A wise man’s לִֽימִינ֔וֹ SDBH inclines to the right וְלֵ֥ב SDBH but the heart כְּסִ֖יל SDBH of a fool לִשְׂמֹאלֽוֹ׃ SDBH to the left

A chacham's lev is at his yamin (right hand); but a kesil's lev is at his semol (left hand).

וְגַם־ SDBH Even בַּדֶּ֛רֶךְ SDBH along the road כְּשֶׁהַסָּכָל SDBH as the fool הֹלֵ֖ךְ SDBH walks לִבּ֣וֹ SDBH his sense חָסֵ֑ר SDBH is lacking וְאָמַ֥ר SDBH and he shows לַכֹּ֖ל everyone סָכָ֥ל SDBH is a fool הֽוּא׃ SDBH that he

Yea also, when he that is a kesil even walketh along the derech, his sense faileth him, and he saith to every one that he is a kesil.

אִם־ SDBH If ר֤וּחַ SDBH temper הַמּוֹשֵׁל֙ SDBH the ruler’s תַּעֲלֶ֣ה SDBH flares עָלֶ֔יךָ against you מְקוֹמְךָ֖ SDBH your post אַל־ do not תַּנַּ֑ח SDBH abandon כִּ֣י for מַרְפֵּ֔א SDBH calmness יַנִּ֖יחַ SDBH to rest חֲטָאִ֥ים SDBH offenses גְּדוֹלִֽים׃ SDBH {lays} great

If the ruach of the moshel rise up against thee, leave not thy mekom; for calmness pacifieth chata'im gedolim.

יֵ֣שׁ There is רָעָ֔ה SDBH an evil רָאִ֖יתִי SDBH I have seen תַּ֣חַת SDBH under הַשָּׁ֑מֶשׁ SDBH the sun כִּשְׁגָגָ֕ה SDBH an error שֶׁיֹּצָ֖א SDBH that proceeds מִלִּפְנֵ֥י from הַשַּׁלִּֽיט׃ SDBH the ruler

There is a ra'ah which I have seen under the shemesh, the sort of error which proceedeth from a shalit (ruler);

נִתַּ֣ן is appointed הַסֶּ֔כֶל SDBH Folly בַּמְּרוֹמִ֖ים SDBH heights רַבִּ֑ים SDBH to great וַעֲשִׁירִ֖ים SDBH but the rich בַּשֵּׁ֥פֶל SDBH in lowly positions יֵשֵֽׁבוּ׃ SDBH sit

Sekhel (folly) is set in great dignity, and the rich sit in low place.

רָאִ֥יתִי SDBH I have seen עֲבָדִ֖ים SDBH slaves עַל־ on סוּסִ֑ים SDBH horseback וְשָׂרִ֛ים SDBH while princes הֹלְכִ֥ים SDBH go כַּעֲבָדִ֖ים SDBH like slaves עַל־ on הָאָֽרֶץ׃ SDBH foot

I have seen avadim (servants) upon susim, and sarim (princes) walking as avadim upon ha'aretz.

חֹפֵ֥ר SDBH He who digs גּוּמָּ֖ץ SDBH a pit בּ֣וֹ into it יִפּ֑וֹל SDBH may fall וּפֹרֵ֥ץ SDBH and he who breaches גָּדֵ֖ר SDBH a wall יִשְּׁכֶ֥נּוּ SDBH may be bitten נָחָֽשׁ׃ SDBH by a snake

He that diggeth a gumatz (pit) shall fall into it; and whoso breaketh through a wall, a nachash shall bite him.

מַסִּ֣יעַ SDBH The one who quarries אֲבָנִ֔ים SDBH stones יֵעָצֵ֖ב SDBH may be injured בָּהֶ֑ם by them בּוֹקֵ֥עַ SDBH and he who splits עֵצִ֖ים SDBH logs יִסָּ֥כֶן SDBH endangers himself בָּֽם׃

Whoso pulleth out avanim (stones) may be hurt therewith; and he that cleaveth wood may be endangered thereby.

אִם־ SDBH If קֵהָ֣ה SDBH is dull הַבַּרְזֶ֗ל SDBH the axe וְהוּא֙ SDBH and לֹא־ SDBH vvv פָנִ֣ים the blade קִלְקַ֔ל SDBH unsharpened וַחֲיָלִ֖ים SDBH more strength יְגַבֵּ֑ר SDBH must be exerted וְיִתְר֥וֹן SDBH produces הַכְשֵׁ֖יר SDBH success חָכְמָֽה׃ SDBH but skill

If the barzel (iron [of the axe]) be blunt, and he do not whet the edge, then must more strength be marshalled; but chochmah brings success.

אִם־ SDBH If יִשֹּׁ֥ךְ SDBH bites הַנָּחָ֖שׁ SDBH the snake בְּלוֹא־ SDBH before לָ֑חַשׁ SDBH it is charmed וְאֵ֣ין SDBH there is no יִתְר֔וֹן SDBH profit לְבַ֖עַל SDBH for the charmer הַלָּשֽׁוֹן׃ SDBH . . .

If the nachash will bite before it is charmed, there is no use in a charmer.

דִּבְרֵ֥י SDBH The words פִי־ SDBH mouth חָכָ֖ם SDBH of a wise man’s חֵ֑ן SDBH are gracious וְשִׂפְת֥וֹת SDBH but the lips כְּסִ֖יל SDBH of a fool תְּבַלְּעֶֽנּוּ׃ SDBH consume him

The words of a chacham's mouth are chen (gracious); but the lips of a kesil will swallow up himself.

תְּחִלַּ֥ת SDBH The beginning דִּבְרֵי־ SDBH of his talk פִ֖יהוּ SDBH . . . סִכְל֑וּת SDBH is folly וְאַחֲרִ֣ית SDBH and the end פִּ֔יהוּ SDBH of his speech הוֹלֵל֖וּת SDBH madness רָעָֽה׃ SDBH is evil

The beginning of the words of his mouth is sichlut; and the end of his talk is holelot ra'ah.

וְהַסָּכָ֖ל SDBH Yet the fool יַרְבֶּ֣ה multiplies דְבָרִ֑ים SDBH words לֹא־ SDBH No יֵדַ֤ע SDBH knows הָאָדָם֙ SDBH one מַה־ SDBH what שֶׁיִּֽהְיֶ֔ה is coming וַאֲשֶׁ֤ר SDBH what יִֽהְיֶה֙ will come מֵֽאַחֲרָ֔יו SDBH after him מִ֖י SDBH and who יַגִּ֥יד SDBH can tell לֽוֹ׃ him

A kesil also is full of devarim; haAdam has no da'as of what shall be, and what shall be after him, who can tell him?

עֲמַ֥ל SDBH The toil הַכְּסִילִ֖ים SDBH of a fool תְּיַגְּעֶ֑נּוּ SDBH wearies him אֲשֶׁ֥ר SDBH for לֹֽא־ SDBH he does not יָדַ֖ע SDBH know לָלֶ֥כֶת SDBH the way אֶל־ to עִֽיר׃ SDBH the city

The amal of the kesilim wearieth him, because he has no da'as of how to go to town.

16

אִֽי־ SDBH Woe לָ֣ךְ to you אֶ֔רֶץ SDBH O land שֶׁמַּלְכֵּ֖ךְ SDBH whose king נָ֑עַר SDBH is a youth וְשָׂרַ֖יִךְ SDBH and whose princes בַּבֹּ֥קֶר SDBH in the morning יֹאכֵֽלוּ׃ SDBH feast

Woe to thee, O eretz, when thy melech is a na'ar, and thy sarim (princes) feast in the boker!

אַשְׁרֵ֣יךְ SDBH Blessed are you אֶ֔רֶץ SDBH O land שֶׁמַּלְכֵּ֖ךְ SDBH whose king בֶּן־ SDBH is a son חוֹרִ֑ים SDBH of nobles וְשָׂרַ֙יִךְ֙ SDBH and whose princes בָּעֵ֣ת SDBH at the proper time יֹאכֵ֔לוּ SDBH feast בִּגְבוּרָ֖ה SDBH for strength וְלֹ֥א SDBH and not בַשְּׁתִֽי׃ SDBH for drunkenness

Blessed art thou, O eretz, when thy melech is a nobleman, and thy sarim (princes) eat in due season, for strength, and not for drunkenness!

בַּעֲצַלְתַּ֖יִם SDBH Through laziness יִמַּ֣ךְ SDBH caves in הַמְּקָרֶ֑ה SDBH the roof וּבְשִׁפְל֥וּת SDBH of the idle יָדַ֖יִם SDBH and in the hands יִדְלֹ֥ף SDBH leaks הַבָּֽיִת׃ SDBH the house

By much atzlut (slothfulness) the rafters falleth; and through idleness of the hands the bais leaketh.

לִשְׂחוֹק֙ SDBH for laughter עֹשִׂ֣ים SDBH is prepared לֶ֔חֶם SDBH A feast וְיַ֖יִן SDBH and wine יְשַׂמַּ֣ח SDBH merry חַיִּ֑ים SDBH makes life וְהַכֶּ֖סֶף SDBH but money יַעֲנֶ֥ה SDBH is the answer אֶת־ SDBH - הַכֹּֽל׃ for everything

Lechem is made for laughter, and yayin maketh merry; but kesef answereth everything.

20

גַּ֣ם SDBH even בְּמַדָּֽעֲךָ֗ SDBH in your thoughts מֶ֚לֶךְ SDBH the king אַל־ Do not תְּקַלֵּ֔ל SDBH curse וּבְחַדְרֵי֙ SDBH even in your bedroom מִשְׁכָּ֣בְךָ֔ SDBH . . . אַל־ [or] תְּקַלֵּ֖ל SDBH curse עָשִׁ֑יר SDBH the rich כִּ֣י for ע֤וֹף SDBH a bird הַשָּׁמַ֙יִם֙ SDBH of the air יוֹלִ֣יךְ SDBH may carry אֶת־ SDBH - הַקּ֔וֹל SDBH your words וּבַ֥עַל SDBH and a winged creature הַכְּנָפַיִם SDBH . . . יַגֵּ֥יד SDBH may report דָּבָֽר׃ SDBH your speech

Curse not the Melech, no not in thy thought; and curse not the oisher in thy bedchamber; for an Oph haShomayim may carry the voice, and that which hath wings may report what you say.
