“See you again around the Eastern Gate.”
I sometimes visualize myself in a resurrected immortal body, moving through the heavenly crowd around the New Jerusalem’s Eastern Gate, looking for Dr. Donald McGavran.
Not the Genesis 19:1 gate of Lot of Sodom,
not the Deuteronomy 21:18-21 gate of the Rebellious Son,
not the Deuteronomy 22:15 gate of the Slandered Bride,
not the Joshua 20:4 gate of the Manslayer’s City of Refuge,
not the Ruth 4:1-11 gate of Boaz and Ruth,
not the 1 Samuel 4:18 gate of Eli at Shiloh.
No, none of those.
Not even the 2 Samuel 15:2 gate of Absalom's Conspiracy,
not the 2 Samuel 18:24 gate of David’s Anguish for Absalom,
not the Esther 2:19-23 gate of Mordecai,
not the Amos 5:10, 12, 15 gate of the Prophet’s Rebuke,
not the Proverbs 31:23 gate of the Virtuous Woman's Husband,
not the Proverbs 1:20-21 gate of Street Preacher Wisdom,
not the Lamentations 5:14 gate of the Gate Made Desolate,
not the Ezekiel 8:3, 40:3 gate of the Prophet’s Vision.
No, none of those.

This is the Eastern Gate of Jerusalem — שַׁעַר הַקָּדִים
the gate that the Messianic King will one day pass through, the gate now sealed, the Eastern Gate of Jerusalem.
There we will see our Savior Moshiach Ben Dovid, the great cosmic Go'el, who will claim His inheritance and open what no man has been able to shut (cf. Rev. 3:7-8, Isaiah 22:22).
O thank God for our Savior! And for you. And for Linda. And for my teacher, Dr. Donald MaGavran, who said to me before he passed from this present darkness into eternity, “Phil, see you again around the Eastern Gate.”
Our new website afii.org is dedicated to his memory.
