שִׁ֥יר SDBH Song הַשִּׁירִ֖ים SDBH of Songs אֲשֶׁ֥ר SDBH This [is] לִשְׁלֹמֹֽה׃ SDBH Solomon’s

Shir HaShirim, which is Sh'lomo's

יִשָּׁקֵ֙נִי֙ SDBH Let him kiss me מִנְּשִׁיק֣וֹת SDBH with the kisses פִּ֔יהוּ SDBH of his mouth כִּֽי־ For טוֹבִ֥ים SDBH is more delightful דֹּדֶ֖יךָ SDBH your love מִיָּֽיִן׃ SDBH than wine

Let him kiss me with the neshikot (kisses) of his mouth; for better is dodecha (thy love) than yayin (wine).

לְרֵ֙יחַ֙ SDBH The fragrance שְׁמָנֶ֣יךָ SDBH of your perfume טוֹבִ֔ים SDBH is pleasing שֶׁ֖מֶן SDBH is like perfume תּוּרַ֣ק SDBH poured out שְׁמֶ֑ךָ SDBH your name עַל־ No wonder כֵּ֖ן SDBH . . . עֲלָמ֥וֹת SDBH the maidens אֲהֵבֽוּךָ׃ SDBH adore you

Tovim is the fragrance of thy shmanim (ointments); thy shem (name) is like shemen (ointment) poured forth; therefore do the alamot love thee [alamot, young unmarried virgins; pl of almah virgin; see Shir HaShirim 6:8; Yeshayah 7:14; Bereshis 24:43; Shemot 2:8; Mishlei 30:19, where the word has this explicit or implicit meaning throughout the Tanakh; see page vii].

מָשְׁכֵ֖נִי SDBH Take me אַחֲרֶ֣יךָ SDBH away with you נָּר֑וּצָה SDBH let us hurry הֱבִיאַ֨נִי SDBH bring me הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ SDBH May the king חֲדָרָ֗יו SDBH to his chambers נָגִ֤ילָה SDBH We will rejoice וְנִשְׂמְחָה֙ SDBH and delight בָּ֔ךְ in you נַזְכִּ֤ירָה SDBH we will praise דֹדֶ֙יךָ֙ SDBH your love מִיַּ֔יִן SDBH more than wine מֵישָׁרִ֖ים SDBH It is only right אֲהֵבֽוּךָ׃ס SDBH that they adore you

Draw me; so will we run after thee; the Melech hath brought me into his chadarim (chambers); we will be glad and rejoice in thee; we will extol dodecha (thy love) more than yayin; uprightly have they loved thee.

שְׁחוֹרָ֤ה SDBH am dark אֲנִי֙ SDBH I וְֽנָאוָ֔ה SDBH yet lovely בְּנ֖וֹת SDBH O daughters יְרוּשָׁלִָ֑ם SDBH of Jerusalem כְּאָהֳלֵ֣י SDBH like the tents קֵדָ֔ר SDBH of Kedar כִּירִיע֖וֹת SDBH like the curtains שְׁלֹמֹֽה׃ SDBH of Solomon

Shechorah (black, dark, sun-blackened) am I, yet lovely, O ye banot Yerushalayim, like the oholim (tents) of Kedar, like the curtains of Sh'lomo.

אַל־ Do not תִּרְא֙וּנִי֙ SDBH stare שֶׁאֲנִ֣י SDBH because I שְׁחַרְחֹ֔רֶת SDBH am dark שֶׁשֱּׁזָפַ֖תְנִי SDBH has gazed upon me הַשָּׁ֑מֶשׁ SDBH for the sun בְּנֵ֧י SDBH sons אִמִּ֣י SDBH My mother’s נִֽחֲרוּ־ SDBH were angry בִ֗י with me שָׂמֻ֙נִי֙ SDBH they made me נֹטֵרָ֣ה SDBH a keeper אֶת־ SDBH - הַכְּרָמִ֔ים SDBH of the vineyards כַּרְמִ֥י SDBH [but] my own vineyard שֶׁלִּ֖י לֹ֥א SDBH I have neglected נָטָֽרְתִּי׃ SDBH . . .

Let your eyes burn not into me because I am black, because the shemesh hath burned its eyes into me; bnei immi (my step-brothers) were angry with me; they made me the keeper of the kramim (vineyards); but mine own kerem (vineyard) have I not kept.

הַגִּ֣ידָה SDBH Tell me לִּ֗י O one שֶׁ֤אָהֲבָה֙ SDBH love נַפְשִׁ֔י SDBH I אֵיכָ֣ה SDBH where תִרְעֶ֔ה SDBH do you pasture your sheep אֵיכָ֖ה SDBH Where תַּרְבִּ֣יץ SDBH do you rest them בַּֽצָּהֳרָ֑יִם SDBH at midday שַׁלָּמָ֤ה SDBH Why אֶֽהְיֶה֙ should I be כְּעֹ֣טְיָ֔ה SDBH like a veiled woman עַ֖ל beside עֶדְרֵ֥י SDBH the flocks חֲבֵרֶֽיךָ׃ SDBH of your companions

O tell me, thou whom my nefesh loveth, where feedest thou? Where makest thou thy flock to lie down at noon? For why should I be as one who veils herself among the edrei chaverecha (the flocks of thy chaverim, fellow com- panions)?

אִם־ SDBH If לֹ֤א SDBH you do not תֵדְעִי֙ SDBH know לָ֔ךְ הַיָּפָ֖ה SDBH O fairest בַּנָּשִׁ֑ים SDBH of women צְֽאִי־ SDBH follow לָ֞ךְ בְּעִקְבֵ֣י SDBH the tracks הַצֹּ֗אן SDBH of the flock וּרְעִי֙ SDBH and graze אֶת־ SDBH - גְּדִיֹּתַ֔יִךְ SDBH your young goats עַ֖ל near מִשְׁכְּנ֥וֹת SDBH the tents הָרֹעִֽים׃ס SDBH of the shepherds

If thou know not, O thou fairest among nashim, go thy way forth by the footprints of the tzon, and feed thy young goats beside the mishkenot haro'im (the tents of the shepherds).

לְסֻסָתִי֙ SDBH to a mare בְּרִכְבֵ֣י SDBH chariots פַרְעֹ֔ה SDBH among Pharaoh’s דִּמִּיתִ֖יךְ SDBH I compare you רַעְיָתִֽי׃ SDBH my darling

O my love, to a susah (mare) among the chariots of Pharaoh do I compare thee.

נָאו֤וּ SDBH are beautiful לְחָיַ֙יִךְ֙ SDBH Your cheeks בַּתֹּרִ֔ים SDBH with ornaments צַוָּארֵ֖ךְ SDBH your neck בַּחֲרוּזִֽים׃ SDBH with strings of jewels

Thy cheeks are lovely with ornaments, thy tzavar (neck) with necklaces.

תּוֹרֵ֤י SDBH ornaments זָהָב֙ SDBH of gold נַעֲשֶׂה־ SDBH We will make לָּ֔ךְ you עִ֖ם [studded] with נְקֻדּ֥וֹת SDBH beads הַכָּֽסֶף׃ SDBH of silver

Ornaments of zahav will we make for thee, studded with kesef.

עַד־ SDBH While שֶׁ֤הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ SDBH the king בִּמְסִבּ֔וֹ SDBH was at his table נִרְדִּ֖י SDBH my perfume נָתַ֥ן spread רֵיחֽוֹ׃ SDBH its fragrance

While the Melech is at his table, my spikenard perfume has yielded its fragrance.

צְר֨וֹר SDBH a sachet הַמֹּ֤ר׀ SDBH of myrrh דּוֹדִי֙ SDBH My beloved לִ֔י is to me בֵּ֥ין SDBH between שָׁדַ֖י SDBH my breasts יָלִֽין׃ SDBH resting

Dodi (my beloved) is to me a sachet of myrrh that lieth in my bosom.

אֶשְׁכֹּ֨ל SDBH a cluster הַכֹּ֤פֶר׀ SDBH of henna blossoms דּוֹדִי֙ SDBH My beloved לִ֔י is to me בְּכַרְמֵ֖י SDBH in the vineyards עֵ֥ין SDBH vvv גֶּֽדִי׃ס SDBH of En-gedi

Dodi (my beloved) is to me as a cluster of henna blooms in the kramim (vineyards) of Ein-Gedi.

הִנָּ֤ךְ How יָפָה֙ SDBH beautiful [you are] רַעְיָתִ֔י SDBH my darling הִנָּ֥ךְ Oh, how very יָפָ֖ה SDBH beautiful עֵינַ֥יִךְ SDBH Your eyes יוֹנִֽים׃ SDBH are [like] doves

See, thou art yafeh (fair), my love; see, thou art fair; thine eynayim are yonim (doves).

הִנְּךָ֨ How יָפֶ֤ה SDBH handsome [you are] דוֹדִי֙ SDBH my beloved אַ֣ף SDBH Oh, how נָעִ֔ים SDBH delightful אַף־ SDBH . . . עַרְשֵׂ֖נוּ SDBH [is] our bed רַעֲנָנָֽה׃ SDBH The soft grass

See, thou art yafeh (handsome), dodi (my beloved), yea, na'im (pleasing); also our couch is verdant.

קֹר֤וֹת SDBH The beams בָּתֵּ֙ינוּ֙ SDBH of our house אֲרָזִ֔ים SDBH are cedars רַחִיטֵנוּ SDBH our rafters בְּרוֹתִֽים׃ SDBH [are fragrant] firs

The beams of our bais are cedar, and our rafters are cypress.
