Nachum 2 — Hebrew–OJB Interlinear

עָלָ֥ה SDBH advances מֵפִ֛יץ SDBH One who scatters עַל־ against פָּנַ֖יִךְ you, [O Nineveh] נָצ֣וֹר SDBH Guard מְצֻרָ֑ה SDBH the fortress צַפֵּה־ SDBH Watch דֶ֙רֶךְ֙ SDBH the road חַזֵּ֣ק SDBH Brace yourselves מָתְנַ֔יִם SDBH . . . אַמֵּ֥ץ SDBH Summon כֹּ֖חַ SDBH your strength מְאֹֽד׃ all

(2:2) A shatterer [Nineveh's overpowering enemy] is come up before thy face, [O Nineveh]; guard thy fortress, watch the derech, fortify thy loins, marshal all thy koach (power).

כִּ֣י For שָׁ֤ב SDBH will restore יְהוָה֙ SDBH Hashem/Adonoi אֶת־ SDBH - גְּא֣וֹן SDBH the splendor יַעֲקֹ֔ב SDBH of Jacob כִּגְא֖וֹן SDBH like the splendor יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל SDBH of Israel כִּ֤י though בְקָקוּם֙ SDBH have laid them waste בֹּֽקְקִ֔ים SDBH destroyers וּזְמֹרֵיהֶ֖ם SDBH the branches of their vine שִׁחֵֽתוּ׃ SDBH and ruined

For Hashem is about to restore the eminence of Ya'akov, like the eminence of Yisroel; for plunderers have plundered them, and made their vine branches as shachat.

מָגֵ֨ן SDBH The shields גִּבֹּרֵ֜יהוּ SDBH of his mighty men מְאָדָּ֗ם SDBH are red אַנְשֵׁי־ SDBH the valiant warriors חַ֙יִל֙ SDBH . . . מְתֻלָּעִ֔ים SDBH are dressed in scarlet בְּאֵשׁ־ SDBH flash like fire פְּלָד֥וֹת SDBH The fittings הָרֶ֖כֶב SDBH of the chariots בְּי֣וֹם SDBH on the day הֲכִינ֑וֹ SDBH they are prepared וְהַבְּרֹשִׁ֖ים SDBH and the spears of cypress הָרְעָֽלוּ׃ SDBH have been brandished

The mogen (shield) of his gibborim is made red, the anshei chayil (valiant men) are in scarlet; the chariot shall flash like fire in the day of its array, and the spears shall be brandished.

בַּֽחוּצוֹת֙ SDBH through the streets יִתְהוֹלְל֣וּ SDBH dash הָרֶ֔כֶב SDBH The chariots יִֽשְׁתַּקְשְׁק֖וּן SDBH they rush around בָּרְחֹב֑וֹת SDBH the plazas מַרְאֵיהֶן֙ SDBH appearing כַּלַּפִּידִ֔ם SDBH like torches כַּבְּרָקִ֖ים SDBH like lightning יְרוֹצֵֽצוּ׃ SDBH darting about

The chariot shall rage in the streets, they shall jostle one against another in the rechovot, they shall seem like flaming torches, they shall dart about like the lightnings.

יִזְכֹּר֙ SDBH He summons אַדִּירָ֔יו SDBH his nobles יִכָּשְׁל֖וּ SDBH they stumble בַהֲלִכוֹתָם SDBH as they advance יְמַֽהֲרוּ֙ SDBH They race חֽוֹמָתָ֔הּ SDBH to its wall וְהֻכַ֖ן SDBH is set in place הַסֹּכֵֽךְ׃ SDBH the protective shield

He [the Assyrian king] shall remember his mighty ones; they stumble in their walk; they shall make haste to the chomah (wall) of it [Nineveh], and the defense shall be prepared.

שַׁעֲרֵ֥י SDBH gates הַנְּהָר֖וֹת SDBH The river נִפְתָּ֑חוּ SDBH are thrown open וְהַֽהֵיכָ֖ל SDBH and the palace נָמֽוֹג׃ SDBH collapses

(2:7) The sha'arei haneharot (the gates of the rivers) shall be thrown open, and the heikhal (palace) reels.

וְהֻצַּ֖ב SDBH It is decreed that גֻּלְּתָ֣ה SDBH [the city] be exiled הֹֽעֲלָ֑תָה SDBH and carried away וְאַמְהֹתֶ֗יהָ SDBH her maidservants מְנַֽהֲגוֹת֙ SDBH moan כְּק֣וֹל SDBH like יוֹנִ֔ים SDBH doves מְתֹפְפֹ֖ת SDBH and beat עַל־ upon לִבְבֵהֶֽן׃ SDBH their breasts

Her [Nineveh's] golus (exile) is decreed, she shall be carried away, her slave girls moaning like the kol yonim (voice of doves), beating their breasts.

וְנִינְוֵ֥ה SDBH Nineveh כִבְרֵֽכַת־ SDBH has been like a pool מַ֖יִם SDBH of water מִ֣ימֵי SDBH her days הִ֑יא SDBH throughout וְהֵ֣מָּה SDBH but now נָסִ֔ים SDBH it is draining away עִמְד֥וּ SDBH Stop עֲמֹ֖דוּ SDBH Stop!” they cry וְאֵ֥ין SDBH but no מַפְנֶֽה׃ SDBH one turns back

But Nineveh is like a pool of mayim; and her mayim is draining away. Stop, stop, shall they cry; but no one turns back.

בֹּ֥זּוּ SDBH Plunder כֶ֖סֶף SDBH the silver בֹּ֣זּוּ SDBH Plunder זָהָ֑ב SDBH the gold וְאֵ֥ין SDBH There is no קֵ֙צֶה֙ SDBH end לַתְּכוּנָ֔ה SDBH to the treasure כָּבֹ֕ד SDBH an abundance מִכֹּ֖ל of every כְּלִ֥י SDBH thing חֶמְדָּֽה׃ SDBH precious

Take ye the plunder of kesef, take the plunder of zahav; for there is no end of the treasures, heaps of kol keli chemdah (every delightful vessel).

בּוּקָ֥ה SDBH She is emptied וּמְבוּקָ֖ה SDBH Yes , she is desolate וּמְבֻלָּקָ֑ה SDBH and laid waste וְלֵ֨ב SDBH Hearts נָמֵ֜ס SDBH melt וּפִ֣ק SDBH knock בִּרְכַּ֗יִם SDBH knees וְחַלְחָלָה֙ SDBH tremble בְּכָל־ and every מָתְנַ֔יִם SDBH bodies וּפְנֵ֥י face כֻלָּ֖ם . . . קִבְּצ֥וּ SDBH grows pale פָארֽוּר׃ SDBH . . .

She is empty, and void, and stripped; and the lev melteth, and the knees give way, bodies tremble, and the faces of them all grow pale.

אַיֵּה֙ SDBH Where מְע֣וֹן SDBH lair אֲרָי֔וֹת SDBH is the lions’ וּמִרְעֶ֥ה SDBH or the feeding ground ה֖וּא SDBH . . . לַכְּפִרִ֑ים SDBH of the young lions אֲשֶׁ֣ר SDBH where הָלַךְ֩ SDBH prowled אַרְיֵ֨ה SDBH the lion לָבִ֥יא SDBH and lioness שָׁ֛ם SDBH . . . גּ֥וּר SDBH cubs אַרְיֵ֖ה SDBH with [their] וְאֵ֥ין SDBH with nothing מַחֲרִֽיד׃ SDBH to frighten them away

Where is the ma'on arayot (den of lions), and the feeding place of the young lions, where the aryeh, even the lioness, walked with their cubs, and none made them afraid?

אַרְיֵ֤ה SDBH The lion טֹרֵף֙ SDBH mauled בְּדֵ֣י SDBH enough for גֹֽרוֹתָ֔יו SDBH its cubs וּמְחַנֵּ֖ק SDBH and strangled prey לְלִבְאֹתָ֑יו SDBH for the lioness וַיְמַלֵּא־ SDBH It filled טֶ֣רֶף SDBH with the kill חֹרָ֔יו SDBH its dens וּמְעֹֽנֹתָ֖יו SDBH and its lairs טְרֵפָֽה׃ SDBH with mauled prey

The aryeh did tear in pieces enough for his cubs, and strangled for his lionesses, and filled his lairs with prey, and his dens with torn flesh.

הִנְנִ֣י Behold אֵלַ֗יִךְ I am against you נְאֻם֙ SDBH declares יְהוָ֣ה SDBH Hashem/Adonoi צְבָא֔וֹת SDBH of Hosts וְהִבְעַרְתִּ֤י SDBH I will reduce בֶֽעָשָׁן֙ SDBH to cinders רִכְבָּ֔הּ SDBH your chariots וּכְפִירַ֖יִךְ SDBH your young lions תֹּ֣אכַל SDBH will devour חָ֑רֶב SDBH and the sword וְהִכְרַתִּ֤י SDBH I will cut off מֵאֶ֙רֶץ֙ SDBH from the earth טַרְפֵּ֔ךְ SDBH your prey וְלֹֽא־ SDBH will no longer יִשָּׁמַ֥ע SDBH be heard ע֖וֹד - ק֥וֹל SDBH and the voices מַלְאָכֵֽכֵה׃ס SDBH of your messengers

Hineni, I am against thee [O Nineveh], saith Hashem Tzva'os, and I will burn your chariots in the smoke, and the cherev shall devour thy young lions; and I will cut off thy prey from ha'aretz, and the voice of thy malachim (messengers) shall no more be heard.
